Thanks Jenny! I get the feeling of being tired of a cut... I guess the way mine is right now is the safe choice, but that doesn't mean it's the best one, right?

Going to go look at your post now...

Astrid, I just want to say that you inspired me! I think our hair may be similar textures and I think it is time for me to chop mine off again. I made an appointment for October 31st and I'm considering some shorter hairstyles too. I'm not thinking I'll go quite as short as a pixie, but I wouldn't mind something shorter than a bob because I'm feeling quite tired of that style.

I love, love, love the pixies you are considering! And I think they will look great on you. Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

Okay, I couldn't wait and made an appointment for the 15th November. Right now I'm a bit afraid of my own daring, because that date is much to soon for only a trim, right?!

Thanks Lara - I guess it all depends on how much work we want to put into it. I learned by trial and error that all those techniques for defining curls don't really work on my hair. I know that it seems that my hair just needs some product/procedure/whatever to curl more, but I know that it just doesn't work that way. My hair looks like it does right now because I work with it, not in spite of it. I'll never have more defined curls/waves, at least not without a curling iron. I'll definitely do as you said and talk with my hairstylist about this.

I don't think there is such a thing as true wash and wear hair. We all have to do something whether it is to add product, blow dry, use a straightening or curling iron, crunch our hair as it air dries. And the weather is many times no help to us.

If it were me I probably would encourage the wave or curls (it is probably because I have stick straight hair) with the aid of a curl cream and running my fingers through my hair scrunching it whilevit air dries or blow dries.

It has taken me many many years to come to terms with my hair. It is fine and straight and has thinned out a bit. I really like my latest cut. And I change up my hairstyle often to keep it current. I just use a root lifting cream and blow dry using my fingers to lift the roots and then use the cool setting to finish it off. Takes me less than 5 minutes. Then throughout the day I just use my fingers
to mess it up which makes it look even better. I do not use a brush or comb at all. So sometimes you just have to play around with your hair until you learn to achieve the look you are seeking.

Nonetheless, you are beautiful and I really like your cut, but the only person you have to please is yourself. Before your next cut consult with your hairdresser and ask him what he would do if he was sitting in that chair and why.

Anyway I saw these cuts which I thought are cute.

OMG, LOVE those, Astrid!!

If you look at the pic of me on my website you will see how my hair looked with shorter front, more texturizing, etc. It was actually easier to care for than what I have now (which is also SUPER easy). And reminds me of these, except mine was a bit straighter. So might be a useful comparison. http://www.susanolding.com

So I tried to find some pictures, but I'm still not quite sure what is doable or not... I don't think I want a lot of length in front, I think a longer bang might be difficult to manage.

Thanks Jules.

Thanks Eva. I'll keep thinking about it and will search for some pictures. Then talk to my hairstylist and see what he thinks. And then decide. I haven't decided yet, but now I think I could make it work.

Thanks Runcarla. Interesting observation, I've never thought about that. You're right that my brows are very light, I might have to look into that. Love your first inspiration pic. A great look if you have the curls for it!

Thanks Shevia. This thread has definitely given me the reassurance that it's an option and I could make it work. There's not much love for pixies around me IRL, so it helps to have YLF to help me figure out if this idea has merit.

I am so flattered to have my hair mentioned on this thread! Astrid, I think we have the same curl level 2A/2B and the key for me has been getting a good cut. I really only spend a minute or less on my hair - wash with conditioner most of the time, scrunch in some curl gel and that's it. I think with your young and beautiful face you can easily pull it off and it will grow back. You can always draw in some eyebrows! (Btw, Carla I love your first inspiration pic!)

I note a lot of the great pixie wearers have very definite brows! Like you Astrid, I have a pale/no brow look, I've gone very short in back, but growing the front long. It curls very tightly though, so you would never know the front is nearly chin length!

I'm not quite where I want to be, but getting close. Below, my inspiration picks.

Sounds like you could give it a go then! I love your hair longer because it's so pretty, and I live vicariously thru others' curls, but if you have the pixie itch it probably won't go away until you try it out. At least, mine didn't!

If you look for Ginnifer Goodwin's longer pixie, I remember it looking a bit wavy in some of the pictures and my hair stylist saying that was her natural texture coming through. I'll try to find them when I'm not on my phone!

Thanks Lucy! Yes, the healthy looking hair is a bonus point for sure. On me longer hair tends to look strawy, the short hair definitely helps with that.

Thanks Deborah! That totally makes sense. I think before I just had it short, without having a style. But I didn't have style in clothing either, so that was that.

Astrid, I think you could pull off a short do:). My hair is about 2C on that scale and it does short quite well. I agree with all that you need to keep so e length on the top or at least at the front. I have loved going short but after 10 months I'm still not quite there with the perfect cut. The short layers are easy to dry off quickly but I do have to style the longer layers as I like straight and smooth and my hair is naturally curly. Generally it is quicker and easier to manage. I agree with all lisap's suggestions. I always think it's important that short hair looks like it's been cut i to a "style" as opposed to just being cut short... Does that make sense?

I love a pixie, and to some extent it will be hard to be satisfied until you try it!

That said, I agree with E and others that it can mean frequent salon visits! I had one for a few years, and had to go every five weeks. Not only was it expensive, it was time consuming, and so I grew mine out when I had my son - I just could not get to the salon often enough! With my current lob, every eight weeks is fine.
But that said, I found it easy to style on a day to day basis, and also it was great for the shine - without the length, my hair was in great condition and it looked really healthy.

Thanks Isabel and Viva! You're both right, it's just hair - and it grows back. I've already done it and yes the growing out part wasn't much fun, but it doesn't take that long either. I need a bit more than half a year to go from longish pixie to very short bob. Both times I went from shoulder length hair to a pixie, when I got one. I never did a length in between to get used to it.

Suz, thanks for the clarification! And yes, I love Shevia in her wavy pixie. The Audrey Tatou picture is definitely an inspiration pic worth saving, because I would want to embrace the natural messy hair if it meant less styling time.

Re the cost of cuts (thanks to Suz, Shannon and Eva) - that wouldn't be a problem. I do like the hairstylist I'm going to right now, because he's done the best job so far. And I would trust him not to cut something that wouldn't work. And they don't charge more than 20€ for a trim (if it's not a big cut and/or color). That's definitely something I can afford to pay every four or five weeks.

Echo and Ruth, I do think you're right and I shouldn't go quite as short as I did back then, if I do it. I'd want it to look modern.

Lisa, thanks. I'm prepared to use some product, but I don't even own a flat iron. I do have a blowdryer, but mostly for visitors. I don't blowdry my long hair at all.

Thanks Caro. I do think my hairstylist would do a good job, but it's true that there's always a risk.

Thanks Gigi. I know the Curly Girl book and I tried different methods over the years, but I found that many they didn't work well for me. I do airdry my hair and don't brush it, but I can't do the conditioner wash for example. Yes, it makes my hair looks nicer, but my scalp absolutely hates it.

Greyscale, thanks! Seems like we really have very similar hair, it's true that my short hair looks much thinner compared to the longer hair and doesn't curl as much. I do love the Audrey Tatou look (again), but the other cuts are too edgy for my taste. I'm more of a classic at heart. But I could definitely see you rock one of them! Oh and your friend's crazy hair looks fierce. How funny that you stumbled across the picture ...

I think my hair is very similar to yours, and I've also wondered if I could do a pixie cut. When the shaved part of my hair grows to be a few cm long, it looks like the texture of your old very short haircut: thin compared to the volume of curls, and doesn't really hold much shape. So a plain pixie cut might not be the best for me.

What about a cut that leaves some longer curls? I like the idea of sculpting layers into your hair to thin it out, and having parts of it very short.
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/359373245239668332/
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/132011832797161607/
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/526710118891761726/
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/335588609706880043/
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/561894490980907797/
You'd need a bit of product but I just use a shea butter & aloe gel that is so easy and natural looking.

Or there's Garance Dore's magic haircut
http://www.garancedore.fr/en/2014/09/11/my-hair/

Totally random note: when I was searching pinterest, this picture of one of my good friends with craaaaaazy hair was in the first page of hits!
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/388083692861642675/

I will be no real help to you, sadly. I don't have curly or super wavy hair, and I really think you need to listen to those who have similar texture to yours, because texture matters a lot.

That said, I am very pro-short-hair, and also -- more importantly -- very pro-hair-adventure. I just went dark after a year of a lot of blonde, and it was scary but fun. I mean, it's only hair!!!

Good luck, Astrid. Listen to the wisdom, but follow your gut on this one. xx

I can't offer any advice about whether to go for a pixie, but I will say that I think I have similar hair to yours (2A, basically wavy), and I have been frustrated also. But I recently checked out a book called Curly Girl from the library, and I am amazed at how much easier my hair is to style now. I made some easy changes in how I wash my hair and how I style it, and that helps preserve the wave so that my hair doesn't look like it's half wavy and half straight. I'm glad I checked out the book, because now I am actually starting to like my hair. It might be worth looking at the book before committing to a new hairstyle.

Interesting points and they do make sense. I tend to discount the costs of frequent cuts because of what I save in time and aggravation. And because I'm not a big "beauty" buyer -- I tend to spend on my hair and little else (lipstick, etc. is pretty much once a year for me). But it's true -- I need to get my hair cut every 5 weeks to keep it looking its best. If I go 6 weeks or 8 weeks, it look horrid. And 4 is a bit too soon.

My advice would be don't do it I had a long-ish pixie for years & while I had a fantastic stylist it worked well. BUT I moved & had trouble finding a really good cutter & my hair just kept getting shorter & shorter & the layers were never right. Agreeing with lisap that there is short & there is short & E about the need to have your hair cut more often.

My hair is dead-straight so a lot easier to work with than wavy/curly hair & they still couldn't get it right. If you don't have complete faith in the cutter then it's best to go with a style that doesn't require the precision you need for a pixie to work well. Just my opinion.

You want to know something weird Astrid? I just pinned that exact picture onto my Pixie board. I have straight hair but it's very thick so I'm not entirely sure what works with curlier hair.

I do think you would look lovely in a pixie but I do agree with E's comment about budget. I have to get my hair cut every 4 weeks or it starts to lose its shape.

The one thing I'd warn about is that pixies aren't as budget friendly. I had one a couple years ago now, based on Ginnifer Goodwin's longer banged one, and while I loved it, it really needed to get trimmed/re-cut every 6 weeks (every 4 probably would have been best), and since I had to go to a much better and more expensive stylist to get the cut I wanted in the first place, it was just not in my budget cards. Also, I had to buy products to make it behave.

Astrid, don't get freaked out by the product part. All it is is a dab of cream , blow-dry, and then fix it up with a straightening iron. I can do mine from wet to completely styled and out the door in less than 10 minutes and I play around with mine a fair bit because i like it looking quite styled and polished for work. Seriously - super easy. You will most definitely want a straightening iron to smooth out the longer pieces -- but again, it's 2 minutes or less of work.

I agree that a short cut that is longer on top will probably work better than a all-over short pixie. Additionally, product is so easy to apply and make work for short hair, and that would help with either volume or changing the part (or eliminating it) if that's what you desire.

I highly favour longer curly hair, but I also freely admit that it is because that's what I wish I had (we always want what we cannot have). You look beautiful with short hair, and as long as you seek out a stylist who will cut it the way you want it (bring pictures), I think it will look great.

what lisap said...longer in front makes it more modern and super super flattering. great contrast to your skirts look.
