Thanks Shannon! I went and bought some medical earrings this afternoon and some disinfectant spray from the pharmacy. The ears had already calmed down over night and putting the second studs in was easy. :)

Thanks JR! You're right of course, it's hardly over-the-top. That it worked without having to pierce it again changes things anyway. Seems like I can leave it out again after all if I don't like it, I just have to repeat this procedure then. I have two on each side at the moment because I want to be able to use both sides again, but I can always take one out later.

Thanks Jules - you're right!

I actually prefer asymmetry if you're going over the standard 1 hole per ear. 3 is the perfect number in decor and food plating too

I'm old and conservative, but two piercings in one ear is hardly over-the-top, even for me. I've even considered having it done myself, but have never bothered. I don't think you would be pushing the envelope at all by rebooting your second piercing.

I've never given any thought to possible asymmetry, but why not?

Thanks Cciele and Rachylou! I think I'm only going to put something in one ear. I wouldn't have thought of multiple piercings as trendy myself, but I can relate to calling it 'young' - although I guess it mostly depends on what kind of jewelry you're wearing.

3 in one ear and 2 in the other, here. So you know I'm for asymmetrical. I agree cciele, it's funny that multiple piercings are thought of as young/trendy. In my world, they're standard issue.

Glad you were able to get the holes clear!

I'm another vote for asymmetry FWIW. I have no lobe piercings (but one tragus) in one ear, and one stretched hole and one normal hole in the lobe of my other ear, plus 2 cartilage piercings that have unfortunately closed.

Interesting that multiple piercings are thought of as young/trendy - I've had mine for 20 or so years!

Okay, I've just googled a bit and read that most of the time really healed up holes don't close again completely, there is just some sort of build up in it so that you can't get the earrings through. So far so good - I rubbed and maltreated the lobes with the rest of some pure alcohol I had lying around and I really got the holes clear! Now my ears are red and look a bit irritated, but I got some earrings through with just a bit of discomfort. I took them out again instantly, but I'm going to buy some medical earrings and some new alcohol tomorrow and then do the whole twisting and sanitizing thing to open them up again.

Thanks Cheryl! I could take it out in case I want to be more dressy, I just can't leave it out for very long. But one or two days shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks Kristin! I also thought asymmetry looks best. Back then I got them symmetrical, but mostly because I wanted a third one on one side later on that I never got...

Thanks Carole! It is kind of trendy I guess. In my age group most women have (or had) multiple pierced ears, or they have them not pierced at all. I'd want them to pierce in the old place if that's possible, those holes are still visible anyway. I've found a pic I've added below where you can see how it looked - I guess I would mostly were similar small silver studs/hoops.

Thanks Elisabeth! Yes, you're right, it's not that noticeable. I love the idea of small thick silver hoops, I can imagine the look.

I think you should go for it. Earrings are so tiny, no one notices them anyway, so you're doing it for yourself (unless of course you wear huge, dangly earrings, but normally you don't wear those in the second, third, fourth holes).

For myself, I prefer the asymmetrical look. I don't think my earlobes have matched since I was 15, haha. I've got two in the normal (bottom) spot, then two extra ones next to that on one side, and one extra one quite a bit higher up (but not in the cartilage) on the other side. So five in total. My holes close over fast too, so I wear matching small thick silver hoops (well, white gold, actually, because my ears are sensitive) in all the holes, all the time. I rarely change them, but if I do, I take out the bottom ones and put in massive dangly ones!

I've always thought about multiple piercing's as trendy and just the one whole in each ear as classic and anything that is permanent is worth thoughtful consideration, but in your case the hole will grow back so it's not really a permanent decision. It does seem like a youthful style, and something that will make you think twice about other accessories especially near your face.

Astrid, I like the look and if you don't mind keeping an earring in at all times I say go for it. Before my top 3 closed I loved the look of 6 on one side and 3 on the other.

Thanks Sara! I mostly wear unobtrusive earrings, small hoops or tiny studs. You won't see me with big dangly earrings. I like the idea of wearing a small hoop in it.

I think a piercing on one side would look fine. I had a second hole in one ear for awhile but it closed up when I left an earring out for too long. I liked the way it looked. I liked to keep a small hoop in it because it was simple, unobstrusive and the hoop was comfortable since it had no back.

Today's blog post got me thinking about my ears again. I constantly wear one pair of studs (one on each side) - I have to because my holes close very fast if I don't. When I leave them out for two or three days I notice that putting them in is more difficult. I have a second set of holes that I got in my teens, I mostly wore studs in all of them or sometimes a very small hoop in one and a stud in the other. Four or five years ago I allowed the second holes to close, because my mum convinced me that it would be more 'classy' that way (she never liked the second holes). I was thinking about getting a second one again, but only on one side. The thing is, if I do it then I have to wear something in it most of the time, there's no 'just leave it out if you don't want it for that week' for me.

Do you think I should do it? Do you like the idea of it being asymmetrical? Or do you think I shouldn't do it?

ETA
Do you think it would compete with my hair and specs?
