Yes, it is the J Crew "burgundy" which is more like a deep red!

Thanks, everyone. I have always gravitated towards deep reds and browns, and rich, vibrant colors.

I agree with Suz - I think we are often attracted to the colours that look good on us, so I would use that as a jumping off point in deciding on a palette.

If that's the crew sweater, I have it too! And it's a chimera! Crew called it burgundy which seems all kinds of wrong because it's a deep true red to my eye. And it's double faced merino with a sort of pecan brown under layer which any art major can tell you will have a warming influence just like under painting a canvas. I've never had a proper color analysis performed but find I gravitate to the colors suggested for soft autumns (autumn with some summery aspects). Like you I have a mix of blue & green veins in my olive colored skin, and not only do I wear both gold and platinum or sterling jewelry my favorite pieces blend both. I have a few 'power' colors that always attract compliments: bold reds without pink undertones; deep warm purples that mimic wine decanted, grape skins or eggplant; rich turquoises & peacock greens; true olive drab or moss colors; orange tones that resemble persimmons rather than actual oranges; and deep ink colored navy with no bright cobalt influences whatsoever. Any of those sound appealing? And when these colors are right, I find I can mix & match pretty freely.

Also, is that the J. Crew oversize sweater? If so, IRL it is less orange-red than it appears on my monitor in your photo. So keep in mind that anything we say is likely limited by what we are seeing on screen.

Often our personal preferences are rooted in unconscious recognitions. That's not to say we can't be wrong, sometimes. But sometimes people reject colours or neutrals that don't work well on them, and are drawn to colours and neutrals that suit them.

Also....around here, we have a saying: Red is a neutral. ;)

That's only a half-joke, by the way. It really can act as a neutral!

I ought to warn you that I have owned a red coat of some description for the last decade. I almost don't feel like myself if I don't have at least one red coat in my closet!

The shade of red that you are wearing looks like a deep coral red on my monitor. I would guess that you look best in warmer tones. Also Angie says that brunettes look fab in blue. I could see you in cobalt, aqua, and navy for sure. Bittersweet orange and oxblood (deep brownish red, not bluish like burgundy)

Tania, I think your overall coloring is very similar to mine. I'm probably a little higher contrast because my skin's a shade lighter and my hair is a shade darker than yours. However, I can wear some warm colors as well as I can wear most cool colors. Then, there are cool colors that only look good on me if I have them paired right. My veins are purple and green. My eyes are hazel, gold and gray. My *natural* hair color is basically what I have now, but it has reddish gold highlights and ashy brown undertones. It has driven me nuts to not be able to figure out "my" colors. So, I pretty much lay claim to any color I like, and play with the outfit until the mix feels right.

The berry sweater in the picture is fab on you. I can see ivory or soft white being better on you than pure white simply because it lends itself to lower contrast. Chocolate brown would be great because of your hair. I bet deep purple and sapphire blue are also stunning on you. You could wear black well, depending on what else you're wearing with it. A brighter lipstick (a deep peachy pink or a soft berry red) can be just what you need to make a higher contrast outfit shine. No more fading into the background!

Last year, I bought a red coat on a whim. I love it, so when I picked a small capsule of clothes for this fall, I tried to work with the coat that I already owned.

I'm trying to figure out how to expand on what I already own and am wondering about other colors. It seems to me whether I look good in a color depends on the lighting, how I feel, whether I smile or not, what else I wear it with, etc vs. a particular color, although some stuff is probably horrible on me.

Do you have any suggestions for me? I don't even know what "neutral" to focus on. When I spend a good deal of time in the sun, my hair has auburn highlights and I tan fairly easily. I have dark brown eyes and hair. My eyebrows are darker than the rest of my hair. Historically, I've gravitated towards browns and ivories as neutral, white and gray have been ok, and I've avoided black, but that has just been personal preference vs. whether something looks good or not (I have preferred to fade into the background). I've look good in peach if I am tanned. I wear both gold and silver jewelry. The veins on my wrist are a mix of purple and green.
