Oh yeah. Jeans/pants are a nightmare to shop for.

I'm 5'2", usually avoid skinny jeans, and live in my flats so hopefully this helps :)

Jeans wise: A&F (I know it's a really twee teen store which I normally avoid myself, but their jeans fit and are good quality. Why not?), Old Navy (which I haven't checked their pants in a while now so I'm not sure about their current stuff), Gap (watch out for stretch. If it's 1%+ lycra size down. They will stretch out and drive you insane).

Pants: Banana Republic

I'm 5' 1"

I always buy regular skinnies and shorten them - I have some from Kut from the Kloth (size down) and from JCrew. I also have Gap Real Straights (not too tight at all).

For bootcuts, I like Gap long and leans.

For dress pants, I like BR Sloan flares and BR Martin Skinnies. They shrink though (even with cold water and line drying), so I have started buying the non-petite size and the length ends up just right after washing a few times. I do wear the flares with a modest heel, though.

I should try Ann Taylor, it sounds like.

I'm just under 5'4", and I don't buy expensive jeans, so no experience with some of the brands listed above. My favorite jeans are Style and Co from Macy's. Around $30 on sale. Nice fit, dark wash, and even a sweet pocket detail.

adore jbrand and ag brand skinnies for a petite pear with a short waist. cj by cookie johnson are also fab. still have to tailor the length, but the rear view is nonflattening.

At 4'11.5" I find that shopping for jeans is worse than shopping for bathing suits. Torture! When I find a pair that fits well in the top half, I think it's totally worth it to have them hemmed, though you have to make sure your tailor knows how to hem jeans while preserving the original bottom, which is nothing like doing regular pants.

I've had luck with Gap Petite jeans, as many here have said, that haven't needed hemming. Also the Not Your Daughter's Jeans come in petites at Nordstrom's and that length has been fine for me. They're spendy, for sure, and I'm really cheap, but jeans are the backbone of so many people's wardrobes that I think it can be worth investing a bit.

I also agree with the comments about cropped pants. Sometimes the proportions can be off on cropped pants, but if they're slim cut in the leg, they can work out to be the perfect length for petites. Finally, I struggle with skinnies, too. I think if your legs are curvy at all, then they can be like leg stranglers, and I don't love the look. But I think straight leg jeans or the cut they call cigarette jeans are awesome for us shorter women, as they help to create the appearance of a longer leg with their clean, narrow lines.

The AT ones that I have are very stretchy. (Modern fit skinnies). So they are super comfortable. But I did get them in what I now realize is a larger size. (I had lost weight and had no idea about my size, really...) They are snug on my calves because I don't have skinny calves.

I've been meaning to ask this question too.

I'm 5'1" and my inseam is 27". I've been looking for slim/skinny jeans for a long time but not jeggings. Any recommendations? Ann Taylor near me has limited petite section and it feels like the skinnies are so tight that I can't breathe.

Petite and short-waisted and I don't wear heels either. Look for something well tailored. A tailor can help with minor alterations like taking in the waist-band and adjusting baggy bum areas. In terms of brands, I like AT for pants and Paige for premium denim. Gap is good for casual stuff.

I agree with Brenda -- it depends on your proportions. I am also 5'1", but my body is made for jeans! Most of my shortness is due to the very short distance between the peak of my bust and my waist. My rise is pretty regular, and my legs are on the long side. So I don't ever buy petite pants, because the rise is too short.

Sorry, that's not very helpful, is it? (if it makes you feel better, for me to find tailored tops where the waist hits in the right spot is next to impossible).

It depends on where you are petite. I'm short overall (5'1") and have short legs, but my rise isn't that short. Of what I've tried, Gap jeans fit me the best. I will admit though that I can't yet imagine spending more than ~$50 for a pair of jeans so I haven't tried the premium brands. I get ankle length and hem them shorter for flats.

Ann Taylor has the best petite pants. I haven't bought jeans in a while but the pairs I have are from Gap, ON, Joe's Provocateur and James Jeans Reboot. So many skinnies are cropped these days that they are generally not an issue. The Joe's look good at first but they stretch too much. I wouldn't buy them again. I wear my gap jeggings at least 2x a week and will be duplicating them if they ever come back in stock. ON has great colored denim. If you have an urban outfitters near you, their "grazer" fit is short. They always fit me and they are worth a shot. FYI I have to size way up in colored or white jeans.

What kind of pants or jeans are you looking for?

If you are petite, you know how frustrating it is to shop for jeans(or any pants). I have my favorite pair of jeans which actually became my favorite after I had it tailored(waist/shortened). I needed another pair so I went shopping on Saturday and it was a very exausting experience. Most of the time the pants that would fit in the waist, wouldn't fit anywhere else. And of course, everything is too long(FYI, I'm 5'1 and I can wear anything from 0-4 depending on a brand). I finally ended up with another pair from Express which will need no alteration(maybe a teensy bit at the waist but its fine with a belt). These were size 4. Their sizing seem to be all over the place since I also tried size 0 in another style and they fit fine(I just didn't like the color). SA was trying to convince me to get size 2 instead of 4 because as she said"they will stretch out and it will be too big. I'm a size 4". Size 2 was so tight on me that I could hardly breath when sitting down, and she was more like a size 6 squiezed into size 4. I had no desire to resemble a stuffed sausage so I passed on size 2.
Anyway, petite ladies what is your favorite places/brands for jeans/pants?
