So glad to hear Sophie and Tippi are on the mend. For Sunny the exercise of the ranch sounds perfect. I also recommend the book Good Owners, Great Dogs my FIL was a vet and said that of all the trainers he had ever met at various conferences Brian Kilcommon just understood dogs the best. He recommended his book to all his patients owners so I am just passing along his recommendation really but am pretty sure I remember a few helpful tidbits on puppy days from the last time I read it a few years back.

Sorry to read about your babies. My dog, age 6, was diagnosed last year with a low grade level 2 mast cell tumor in her right ear flap. They did not get clean margins and I did not want to subject her to another surgery or radiation since she would have to be anesthesized each time and the radiation would be right next to her head so I am just keeping a close eye on her and giving her benadryl everyday. My heart just bleeds for ailing pups because no matter how much pain they are in, they continue to love us and make us happy.

Thank you for all the great wishes!

Sophie has been on some painkillers and muscle relaxants, as well as a break from the puppy (who is back in TX with hubs now), and she is seeming much more like her old wiggly self. :-)

Tippi has been getting a mess of drops in her eye every day, and she's wearing the cone of shame still, but she seems much better. We have another checkup with the eye specialist on Friday.

Here are the girls this morning. Tippi's pug head tilt is even funnier with the cone. :-)

ETA: Oh, I meant to add -- Sunny is a really good puppy! Very smart and learning quickly. She made the trip with my husband back to the ranch, and she's having a blast running around with him. She and the cat (who stays at the ranch) are having fun tormenting each other again. No accidents in the car or hotel rooms or anything. She has started to make a special bark when she needs to go to the bathroom. I think she's going to be a great addition to the family as she matures.

Sorry to hear about your fur baby health issues.

Our boxer, Sadie, had a mast cell tumor at age 4. It was removed and thereafter, her "chemo" was a Benedryl each day. I would put the capsule in ice cream and scoop out a bit with the pill. She loved it. She would let me know when it was time for her medicine. Ice cream works wonders in many ways;)

Hope your older babies are feeling better and that the new baby is settling in.

Janet I just wanted to say you and your pups are in my prayers. I have three standard schnauzers. We lost our fourth last spring and I still have not recovered from that. His sister just turned 15 yesterday. The princess is very fragile. She's blind from cataracts but was too old for surgery (needs assistance walking, hand feeding, diapers) we are on elder care but she's happy, hungry and loving. So she gets carried hither and yon and pampered. On thanksgiving, the princess managed to entangle herself in the base of a kitchen bar stool. We did not believe she could recover. She was totally torquing her body and could barely bear weight with assistance. But we decided she deserved a chance. With antiinflammatories, rest, belly slings, dog proofing and time she's regained most of her mobility and shows no sign of pain although we keep her on rimadyl. So, I have Sophie in my prayers. I was totally bereft when the princess injured herself and I really empathize. We are on borrowed time here, but we take it day by day and kiss by kiss. So I feel for all the work, the stress, the uncertainty. I am so glad Tippi is doing better!! Hopefully, time will heal the injury and the eye will be fine. Good luck and hope the home care is not too arduous!! Truly, what we do for love!! My young babies are 6yo. My boy had true pathologic shyness and that made him act out aggressively in obedience and conformation as a puppy. Honestly as a puppy, I thought we might have to put him down - it was that bad. With extensive behavior modification (if you have never read Control Unleashed by Leslie McDevitt -it's brilliant) and help from a behavior expert at Univ of P, he has become the single most loving, sweet, tolerant boy in the world. He'll never see the inside of a ring and never have pups, but with love and patience, he proves all good things are possible. We've shown and finished dogs in conformation and obedience but without professional help, a lot of time and training, he would not be the sweetheart he is today. So, again, I really empathize. Plus it's even harder when the choice to take on another "baby" was not made together. Reaching out to give you and your fur babies big cyber hugs. Good luck and my thoughts and all my fervent good wishes are with you all!!

Well, some spots of good news:

Tippi is coming home today! We have an appointment in another hour or so to go meet the vet and pick her up. I *think* she has dodged a bullet as far as needing surgery. Still crossing fingers.

Sophie's troubles with her hind legs the last few days seem to have nothing to do with her mast cell tumor. The vet is pretty sure it's not neurological either -- he suspects that all the running around she did at the ranch was perhaps just a bit much for her aging little pug body. She will be on muscle relaxant and pain/inflammation meds for a few days. If that doesn't help, we may need to do further tests to see if she has some sort of spinal/disk problem.

Sunny has a clean bill of health. She's a good puppy!

Thanks for the good thoughts.

I have not responded to each of you individually, mainly because I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed, but I want you to know that I really, really appreciate all the words of support and advice! I am pretty exhausted. I haven't gotten much sleep the last couple of nights -- I'll wake up at 3am and my mind will start racing with worry. :-(

Sophie and Sunny are going to the vet this morning -- Sunny for basic first puppy visit, and Sophie to evaluate her problems and see what can be done for her.

Tippi has spent two nights in the vet hospital, receiving drops in her eye every hour and antibiotics. The vet left a message late yesterday that she seems to be doing a bit better, so we're going to go see her today and find out how her progress has been. We're crossing our fingers that no surgery is necessary and that the infection can be cleared medicinally.

Thanks for all the good thoughts. Wish us luck today!

So sorry your dogs are having troubles. We've gone through that of course. Just two years ago this month we lost our Jack Russell to a brain tumor. He was only eight, and started having grand mal seizures. Since then, we've adopted two more dogs, another Jack Russell, and a Scottie. They are both "used dogs". One had been a stray as a puppy, and the other was given to us by a woman in very poor health. It's a mad circus at our house everyday now. Sometimes I think we must have been crazy to get these dogs, and other times I think we would have been crazy not to get them.

It is so hard dealing with our pets when they are ill. Sending healing thoughts their way. For the tumor, you may want to try the alternative remedies as suggested in these links as the traditional options may be limited or may be extremely harsh as a first course. I use the site all the time for health related issues and while some of the suggestions seem "out there" I am often surprised how well many others work, esp. "Ted's Remedies".

De-lurking to let you know I'm thinking of your two puglets, and am hopeful that Sophie and Tippi will heal and get the treatment they need. By the way, my Mom has a black pug and he has the scratched cornea/eye problem too, and her little guy has been helped a whole lot with some "tear gel" (just from the pharmacy section of the grocery store or a local drugstore) plus prescription eye drops. I don't know the name of the prescription eye drops, but the 'tear gel' is just that - you can find it at any drugstore or pharmacy section of the grocery store. The vet recommended the tear gel in addition to prescription eye drops. Mom's "Mickey" can't see all that well out of the one eye, but at least he's not in any eye pain and is much happier with the drops and tear gel.

Meanwhile, I am hoping there is something for Sophie too - something to make her feel more comfortable. Not sure if it helps, but my last doggie, "Beatrice" had osteosarcoma (pretty bad) and fish (leftover baked salmon and/or salmon skin that we didn't eat) as well as fish oil capsules actually helped to make her feel a bit more comfortable. Just piercing a regular fish oil capsule and putting it into her doggie dinner seemed to help a wee bit.

In terms of Sunny - I wanted to share that we adopted a totally wild and crazy, supposedly "un-adoptable" black lab ("Gus") from the pound a few years back, and he was quite a challenge. Puts Marley of "Marley and Me" to shame. The shelter was phoning me daily/weekly for awhile after we adopted him, asking how it was going, and they were so surprised and pleased that we were keeping him, despite his issues. Gus, the seemingly unwanted and un-adoptable black lab, is pictured in my avatar.

The thing that helped the most with Gus was tons of activity and socializing with other rambunctious/active doggies. I found a dog walker/hiker/trainer guy who turned out to be amazing, and Gus is so much better now with other dogs of all sizes/ages and temperaments. He seems to "get" that not every dog is as wild, crazy and rambunctious as he is. It seems like he's developed a sensitivity to other dogs and people now, and is able to adjust his behaviour accordingly.

I didn't take Gus to puppy training school since he was already two when we adopted him, and he actually "failed" at doggie daycare (half hour meet & greet/trial visit = total disaster). Yeah, he was that troublesome.:) Like I said, the dog walker/hiker person I hired was really good. Better than puppy school, and better than hoping Gus would learn how to behave at a dog daycare.

This is my very long-winded way of suggesting that a good dog walker/trainer type person might be much better than puppy training school for Sunny. The bonus would be that when Sunny returned home from a really long walk, she'd be tired and calm - ie. nice and relaxed around your puglets, instead of being all wound up.

Hang in there Janet - I'm sending all kinds of love and prayers for Sophie and Tippi, and a big "be nice to the pugs" boost for Sunny.

Including a photo (or three) of Gus and his rambunctious friends. Gus is so much calmer now because of these outings. I bet Sunny would do well to go off on some outings with other (active) doggies in the company of a good dog walker/trainer type person. We humans can try - but it's not quite the same as having the chance to unleash that puppy energy with other doggies who also want to play and run around like crazy.

Hugs, healing and tummy rubs for Sophie and Tippi, and a ridiculously long walk/hike with a bunch of other energetic doggies for Sunny. A giant dose of "it'll all work out" zen-like energy for you and a bunch of forgiveness for your DH. Here's hoping that Sunny soon figures out that Sophie and Tippi would love some puppy joy and maybe even some cuddles, but maybe not necessarily the rambunctious puppy energy all the time. :)

Oh, Janet, hugs and a lot of good thoughts are going your way from me!
Sick pets are like sick kids: you cannot stop worrying until they are well again. I hope both doggies will recover soon.
A new puppy is a lot of work but it should be cool to get a running buddy, no? Wishing you strength and patience because you will definitely need them with the puppy.

So sorry to hear the news about your pugs, Janet. That is hard. It's so painful to watch a beloved animal friend in pain. I hope the vet gets Tippi sorted right away, and finds a way to make Sophie more comfortable.

As for Sunny, a puppy is SO much work, even the best one -- yet also so much fun, and it sounds as if she's got a great temperament and heart.

Still, I think Mr. Janet owes you a new leather jacket for that decision.

So hope your puggies return quickly to their happy selves. We have three pugs. One old dear is 12, nearly 13 and has a bit of arthritis and a couple of odd tumors that were benign and removed last summer.. One who is six had several bad seizures a month ago but seems to be OK on meds. They are fawn. My black pug is the healthiest so far. Pugs, like all dogs, squeeze into the nooks of your heart. Sending big tummy rubs to your pugs.

Sorry to hear about your pet worries, Janet. My old man pug scratched his cornea a couple of years ago and is fine now. Thankfully we have no experience with the mast cell tumors. I hope your vet can be of help to Sophie. And Sunny, how cute is she?

Hi. I have nothing useful to add to the conversation. Just that I have friends who've just had to make major and painful decisions around their pets. And my own cat is suddenly really aging quickly. So I empathize.

Your hubs is in the dog house indeed! You are really a good sport, though. I guess eventually everything will sort itself out. In the meantime, hang in there.
