I find two sorts of splits in my wardrobe as well as inspiration board: shades of neutrals and monochromes vs riotous brights and multicoloured prints (corresponds to high confidence/even keel on calm waters vs mood booster/effusive states of mind, often seasonally predictable); also, very folksy traditional vs very unconventional (I use the former when nostalgic or if not wanting to scare business contacts)

It sounds pretty normal to me, though it can be helpful to see whether it's kind of a % devoted to experimenting, or just getting a fun/color fix, or whether you want to integrate the personas more.

I'm kind of in Gaylene's boat where my work capsule leans much more conservative and wanting to be modern but not really notable for how modern or trendy, IYKWIM, plus needing a comfort factor for long hours. Whereas social events can be more "fun" , include jeans, can experiment with footwear.
And casual, well, I want it to be washable and not too precious!

Where I'm tryng to blend and overlap things is in trying to have a mixable work wardrobe that still includes some color and texture. These aren't off the table at all and do increase the happiness factor. Not wild & crazy but rich colors with neutrals, more contrasting neutrals, more texture in knitwear, Angie's "false plains" and maybe some more adventurous accessories. Less boring.

Yes!

My partner (semi-)jokingly says I am dressing 7 people. I have gotten them closer to being merged, but I definitely still suffer from wardrobe MPD, to a large degree.

There's a ladylike version of me that likes to come out and play - she loves a-line skirts and twin sets.

There's the skater/ mall punk side of myself that lives in oversized denim or wide wales, sweatshirts, and Vans.

There's the office version of me, who typically wears trousers and a drapey button down with ballet flats or oxfords, but sometimes wears a dress or straight skirt with some tall boots.

There's the dressed up version of myself, who goes to weddings, mitzvahs, funerals, and steeple chases (it would be my "visiting the grandparents and going to The Club" version, but they've all passed).

There's the version of myself that actually HAS the freedom to dress in whatever fantasy version of myself I envision (this is the version that gets to wear bat and dinosaur costumes, psychedelic pants, and tailcoats covered in sequins. This is also the version that almost never gets photographed).

There's the boho/ hippie side, that wears a lot of maxi skirts and oversized sweaters with a belt. She sometimes mixes a bit with the office self, to an interesting result.

And finally, there's the "funky rebel" side, which makes up the majority of the pictures I actually take, I think. *laugh* I'm also leaning towards calling this "cracked out preppie," since I see a lot of prep-oriented staples, but in high intensity patterns or colour combos.

I feel like each of these personas come out at least once a week, but sometimes, different personas come out based on when/ where I am! Ha! Office version turns into skater self when I've got a chill night at home, but can also morph into cracked out preppie OR boho me, if I'm meeting friends for dinner, depending on my mood at the time.

Well I have my day to day clothes and my holiday clothes and I am not sure how I would tie the descriptions together. I think my goal is to look interesting but not especially approachable and not scream at passerbys with my clothes but be worthy of a second look by a careful observer. My audience is different: strangers on the street or people I have just met as opposed to friends and family. Ah ha! This has nothing to do with your initial post does it though?

This is interesting Dana and yes I have noticed this inyour dressing. I think I can have two quite clear style personalites.. one for work and the other for me :)

I love modern classic (structure, pencil skirts, blazers) and I love I suppose more avant garde yet simple lines, draped silhouettes and neutrals. My goal recently has been to see how I can combine the too. But really no one says I have to.

I think generally our personalties can be quite complex and therefore, dressing in the one 'style' religiously is perhaps not workable for many of us.

Yup! In summer I have shades of beige, cream, and silver/taupe that I generally wear together, and in winter I have charcoal and gray, also worn together. And then, I have stuff in colors that also go with those neutrals but for whatever reason, I am more apt to wear color with color. I thought I was the only one who did this.

Me too. About 90% of my wardrobe is the 90's minimalist thing, and then I just throw a super crazy printed top in there. I love mostly simple, well made items, but I'm still attracted to fun and funky patterns.

I am attracted to things that are super feminine (romantic retro and lacy), minimalistic but sharply tailored, whimsy, and preppy with lots of color and shine. Any thing could come out of that combination if I tried to represent all of them equally.

I won't lie I had huge problems trying to figure out how to combine these elements into cohesive outfits without looking like I got dressed in the dark. The two extremes of my wardrobe mesh nicely around basics and I'm learning to nod at elements of my personality with color, pattern, texture, or print. Adding one or two of these elements even in small ways help make a generic feel exactly like my style.

Hmm. Well, I've been working on winnowing the personalities down, and having different versions of the same basic personality. It would be hard to maintain this if I, say, get a job back in the suburbs, where personality is persona non grata.

yes, to some degree. Maybe not as extreme as the capsules you are describing. But I have my more feminine flowing look and my harder edged rock n roll looks (which I haven't been able to explore much with all the uniform wearing lately). Also I find summer looks to be lighter and brighter in color than much of my Tahoe wardrobe.

If you would have asked me this question a few years ago, I'd have wondered what you were doing in my closet ;)

My closet had very distinct personality groups depending on whether the items were for work, for leisure, or for travel. My work wardrobe was very sleek and minimal, with decided avant-garde leanings, mostly in shades of grey, black, and ink blue with an occasional pop of cobalt, purple, or burgundy; patterns were non-existent. My leisure wardrobe, on the other hand, looked like it could have come straight out of a North Face/ Patagonia catalog (which, in fact, most of it did!). My travel wardrobe heavily skewed towards an Ines de la Fressange-chic in shades of black, olivey-tan, blues, and white, with a couple of breton-striped tops as the only pattern. They were all "me", at least to some extent, but, more importantly, each capsule represented the persona that I wanted to take on when I was in that role.

It was only when started to move towards retirement that it seemed ridiculous to have such a disparate closet but trying to meld my closet's personality disorder hasn't been easy. The style/wardrobe building musings that others have posted about on this forum have been enormously useful--especially the concept of "happiness factor". I'm still looking for a style descriptor that melds an avant-garde/minimalist with REI and Ines de la Fressange tendencies...

This has always been me. If I let myself, it still would be. I've recently gotten pretty strict with myself, gotten rid of a lot of things that were lovely but didn't adhere to the same style as everything else, and now won't let myself buy anything new that's outside my current style.

I realized that having completely different personality types made it extremely difficult for me to get good mileage out of my pieces, since half of the things I had could never be worn together. And more importantly, I came to the somewhat depressing realization that a lot of it was a bit too juvenile. I never figured I'd be too old for anything at 25. Ha ha.

Not in my fledgling real wardrobe, but in my imaginary, unfulfilled wardrobe, for sure. I have a separate section for vintage-style dresses and shoes to play up this sultry, romantic tango fantasy. I have mod outfits (the kind that look great on Angie, and kind of silly on me) and minimalist items. I've accepted that I don't really have a style or a look, even if I could pull off any look. Which I can't.

I don't do this too much but I definitely use more colour in summer.

I'm noticing two sides to my wardrobe these days. One is simple shapes, mostly white, black, and gray, with texture. The other is still simple shapes, but with tons of visual happiness like liberty-print style small florals, colors, and openwork knits.

No, really.

These aren't so much function capsules as personality capsules - when I get sick of my 90s minimalism sometimes it's fun to grab something totally different.

Anyone else do this?
