April, can you give me a link? I just checked again, I still don't see the jeans I tried on in the store. They had the slit pockets in the back, like trousers do, but skinny legs. This jean here, but with skinny legs:

http://bananarepublic.gap.com/.....=936142012

(Note: these jeans are much more dark wash in real life. The picture makes the denim look faded/lighter than it is. Then again, perhaps with a few washes they will fade like this)

As for the ones I tried on in the store, I did not think they were too skinny, but I rarely have issues with the thighs/calves/ankles. It's the midsection I have problems with. And I am getting more and more apple lately. So I am all for the "relaxed" skinny trend, because that is basically what I achieve simply by sizing up to fit my waist. :-)

Thanks for that critique, Shiny -- very helpful. There is a pair on the site right now that reviews are complaining about due to "tightness in the thigh area, like skinnies" -- I wonder if those are the ones you tried on.

April, I'd say they are worth a try, for sure. They fit an awful lot like BR Martin's dress slacks I have in my closet, except in denim. Part of it is my eye -- I have been living in either skinnies or dresses for so long, it's difficult for me to adjust to a different, more classic/conservative cut. My "go-to" black dress slacks right now are from AT, they fit slimmer in the legs and also the fabric is very drapey (unlike BR dress slacks OR denim).

Actually, come to think of it, they may have very similar cut but the fabric makes them drape differently.... now you have me wondering. I will lay them down flat and compare later.

As for the BR trouser jeans, I would say the denim is what you'd expect for non-premium. It does stretch quite a bit, hence my reticence to return the size 25's and keep the 26's.

When I was in the store the other week, I tried on a denim trouser jean that had more of a skinny leg. They only offered them in regular, and I have not seen this version online at all. I did not buy them because I didn't want another pair of skinnies, so I came home and ordered the wider leg version online, thinking the denim would be the same. And I don't think it is. The wider leg version seems to have a slightly heavier denim. It is possible my memory is faulty, but the skinny leg version was very cute. I tried on two different sizes, the sized up version gave a "relaxed" skinny look, except in a sharp dark wash with no distressing.

Shiny, do you know if they revamped the BR trouser style? I had a pair from several years back that didn't thrill me. The denim wasn't, I don't know, crisp enough or something. They looked kind of sloppy.

Are you happy with your more recent ones? Would you say they're worth another try?

I received the Paige Canyon's late yesterday and just tried them on this morning. I think I may have found my work jeans! These seem to combine the best of all the jeans I've tried on recently in my hunt. They are high rise, but fit comfortably at the waist -- not tight at all. Size 26 - I also ordered 27 to compare but I haven't even opened the package on the 27's since the 26 seem just right.

They are slimmer in the thighs and knee, like the yoga jeans. They are 5 pocket jeans, not trouser jeans. Rear view meets with my approval. They flare out pretty dramatically below the knee, but since they are so long, I'll have to cut off a lot and should wind up with more of a bootcut than a wide flare.

The material is nicer than the BR - high quality denim, with just the right amount of stretch. And lighter weight than the yoga jeans, which is a plus as I do not like heavy denim. Very dark wash, no distressing.

Now I just have to wash a couple times then take them to the tailor for PPL hemming!

I may still keep one of the BR trousers. Debating on that. Mostly because I'd love to see how much they shrink in the wash, but also if wider cuts are coming back, these could be just the ticket for that.

I'm feeling so relieved to have sorted out most of my most pressing needs with this latest wardrobe update. Phew! I couldn't have done it without YLF. Now I think I can focus more on the fun stuff, the nice but not necessary, and wardrobe items not just for work.
