I've definitely considered it. I have dark eyebrows that have thinned out and occasionally have bald patches. I fill them in with pencil, but it wears off throughout the day, so I've been researching it for a while. Unfortunately, most of the websites I find for permanent cosmetics in my area have photos that completely scare me! I mean, if that's the BEST example they have, how many people are unhappy with their results?!

Marley, thank you for sharing your experience. You look very natural in your pictures. I would consider eyeliner as I have darker lips already. The eye brows don't sound natural. Debora, love the pictures, but I would just do a subtle line in dark brown. (I have dark brown hair and eyes.) That way I could always add more or a darker color for special occasions.

Ibbi, thank you for sharing the article on MRI's and tattooing! That is a concern. I would definitely research it if I move further along than talking about it. I would likely go to the medical spa connected with my hospital, which was just recognized as top hospital of the decade.

Tracina, have you tried the stain lipsticks? They last a long time. But they do dry your lips.

Marley I'm glad to hear of your experience. I have been thinking about getting my lips done for a couple of years now. I too have no color in my lips and agree that it looks like I don't even have lips. I can't keep lip color on.

My hair stylist (who's in her mid-30's) had her lips done and permanent eyeliner applied over a year ago, and I have to say it still looks a little "messy" and red/irritated around her mouth. Not a good look. She is very fair and the color seems too dark on her.....or perhaps she didn't go to a very talented makeup person.

I don't think I'd risk it...there are too many ways for it to go wrong.

I don't think I would ever do my eyebrows - (even though my eyebrows are blonde and thin) - because I have NEVER seen permanent eyebrows that look natural. However, even the fading and blurring that has occured with my lips and eye-liner look OK - just really natural - no one knows that I even have permanent lipstick and eye-liner! In fact, whenever I go to the dentist the hygenist always gives me a tissue to wipe off my lipstick before they get started. Its kind of funny - I just tell her that I don't have any lipstick on - that that is just the color of my lips! And she oohs and ahhs and shakes her head in amazement that my lips STILL (at my age) have such nice color!
Also, another benefit to perm make-up is that its a lot easier to look at yourself when you get up first thing in the morning! (Also, easier for your DH to look at you too!)

It scares me on many levels. However, my sister did her lips, eyebrows and eyeliner and is thrilled. My best friend did eyeliner, rather uncharacteristic for her, and she loves it. They both look good and natural.

If I were to consider anything, it would be eyeliner. I love the look of a subtle liner, but find it hard to do, and difficult to keep looking fresh and polished all day. The artist is key, and I would be doing tons of research first.

I don't know....I'd proceed with *extreme caution* when it comes to tattooing your face. The one example I know in real life -- a friend of my mother-in-law's -- had her eyebrows done and she looked like a clown. I admit that the tattoo artist matters a great deal, and possibly a different artist would have done a far better job. But I have a 20-year-old tat (not on my face) that has sure faded and fuzzed out a lot over time. It's in an area that almost never sees the sun. I think the ink just gradually seeps through the bottom layer of your skin. So even if your tattooed-on makeup looks fab at first, it may change colour, fade or migrate over time in an unpredictable way.

Now, having said that -- Marley, I bet yours looks great, because a trained artist with a light touch can do it well. And I totally understand why you'd want to skip the hassle of makeup -- especially the lips, because lip colour fades with age, and along with the slight lip deflation that's in store for all of us, many of us would like the extra oomph of tattooed-on colour. I'm not forty yet and I feel that I need a bit of lipstick every day! And I have to re-apply it many times....sometimes I wonder how much lipstick ends up in my stomach over the course of a year....urgh

Been reading for a little while, but delurked to comment here: while it would be wonderful to not have to worry about hassles with makeup, the pigments in permanent makeup (as with tattoos elsewhere on the body) have the potential to cause problems if you were ever to have an MRI scan. There have been cases where the pigments heated up in the magnetic field and caused burns:

I had my lips tatooed a natural (for me) lip color about 7 years ago - and my eyes lined on the lower lid a real soft, natural brown color - and I LOVED it! The main thing that I liked about it was that as I had aged my lips ad lost their color (they were like the color of my skin!) and my eye color also faded. When I would get up in the morning and look at myself in the mirror I couldn't event see my lips! So a friend of mine who worked and trained with a dermotologist tatooed my eyes and lips for me - and I have never regretted it. However, over the years it has faded, and if my friend was still around (she moved to Germany!) I would ask her to touch it up. I don't have the money right now to pay for someone to do it, but I had a very positive experience with it!

I've wondered too. My eyes have totally lost their definition with age, and I always apply liner now. I have not varied how I put it on for years - just a thin line to add some definition.

I'd be tempted, but the fading issue scares me. In the book "Orange is the New Black" she talked about the prison population and the peculiar, old tatooed makeup and it's not pretty!

Eva, great topic! I've wondered about this too. I'm afraid of dating myself with permanent makeup. I found some great photos on a beauty blog showing makeup trends through the decades. It would probably be just my luck to get permanent makeup and then to have it go out of fashion.

Tats fade and stretch over time, the edged look less clean- and they look dated after a certain amount of time. Make up trends change over time. I wouldn't want to be permanently attached to any one make up look, and I wouldn't want any tattoos on my face because if something goes wrong, there is no fixing it.

It seems drastic...What if you change your mind?! Have you tried using oil to remove your eye makeup? No scrubbing necessary...I use jojoba oil personally, but there are other great oils too and you can find them in any health food store.

Sveta brought up the question in another post about permanent (tattoo) makeup. I was just thinking about that very topic. Has anyone tried it? I wondered about permanent eyeliner. The only reason I'd consider it is because it would be nice not to have to scrub eyeliner off my eyes every night (I'd always wash make up off at night). As I get older, I thought it might be more gentle on my eyes. Or not? A magazine article recommended it for that reason. Any thoughts or experiences in the YLF world?
