This is an informative thread, Laura! Good question, Ledonna N! And thanks for the quick tutorial, Angie!!

I like this on you, Laura- throw on a black blazer and a cross body satchel and you are on your way out the door in a sporty look with a Parisian touch!

That said, if you don't love it send it back! (and yes, I do have an 'issue' with exclamation marks...!!! giggle)

Thanks, everybody. I'm leaning toward sending it back, because I feel like it's a little too cutesy / young for my taste. I feel like peplums work for my body type, but not my personality necessarily.

Exactly, Sharon. All a peplum is - is a flounce or frill. Its position changes, but the concept is the same. I like the length on tall Laura. She totally pulls this off.

It's a pleasure, Ledonna.

I think it's cute. To me, it reads as an untucked, long top with a girly/flirty edge to it.

Interesting study on peplums. :)

I would say that regardless of what type of peplum it is, if you don't like the style (that is, if you prefer it at your natural waist), I would return it unless you are absolutely in love with it. I save alterations for only those items that I am really in love with.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a dropped waist peplum. You can certainly pull it off. It's definitely a little on the sweet side. Looks cute with the sneaks!

Great question, Ledonna. In short - no. Pepums needn't be positioned on the waist, although many of them are and ALL the ones you wear are.

Peplums can also sit above or below the waist. In Laura's case, the peplum is dropped waist. In my case - see pic below - the peplum is above the waist.

A dropped waist peplum lengthens the torso and shortens the leg line because it visually adjusts the position of the waist. Heels are therefore a good idea. In Laura's case though, her leg line is long to begin with (Laura is very tall), and to my eye she can wear flats here no problem.

Furthermore, the top and bottom are high contrast, which creates a strong horizontal line. If the top was low contrast to the jeans, the leg line wouldn't look as short, and the torso not as long.

Conversely, a peplum that sits above the waist like my blouse below, shortens the torso and lengthens the leg line.

Hope that makes sense.

Hi, Laura please don't take offense at my questions or forgive my ignorance this is in no way directed at you OK. Still in the process of learning proportion but, I have a couple of questions and I don't mean to offend.

@ Angie.....

"This is definitely a style of peplum - one that does not sit on your natural waistline. I like it."

I guess my questions are as follows:

Why do you like it?

I thought all peplums were supposed to sit at the natural waist line?

Next is this an example of a drop waist peplum?

If you have time can you please explain. I like peplums but not understanding the difference.

Thank you in advance.

I wonder if it's too long just in the front. This happens to me with skirts sometimes because I've got a tilted waist (and a big butt) but with tops it's not usually that obvious. I could shorten it at the waist seam just in the front, grading to nothing at the sides...

It is interesting because from the side the peplum seems to hit at the right place.
my first reaction was, yes it is long but at a second glance I don't know.
sorry for being so unhelpful .

Since we're talking about peplums, proportions, etc.: This Junarose top is on loan from Gwynnie Bee. It's actually long enough for my torso (hard for me to find) but now I'm wondering if it's too long, or just that the proportions of bodice and peplum are off, or what. I experimented with folding up the waist seam an inch or so and it seemed a bit more flattering, although I haven't tried pinning it officially. Pics are of it as is.

What do you think: OK? Bad, just send it back? Worth altering?
