What a great thread - so interesting and I love hearing about all the regional differences. If you substitute yoga pants for jeans, I'd say you've nailed the uniform in my suburban town. As for myself, I would say jeans, sneakers (currently gray Vans) and neutrals or nearly-neutrals (e.g. blush pink) basically covers 90% of my outfits! Not as much black anymore though. Small changes!!

I'm wearing a black top with jeans as I type. Just as lounge wear. And I had black opaques on at work with a mostly blue dress that had some black bits.
I would like to wear less black, but in winter here (in Australia) so many styles only come in black or grey. At least I have red and pink coats - which I find cheering in the winter.

I laughed when I read this post, because pairing black and denim is one of my all time favorite outfits. I recently did a post on it on my blog about this outfit combination. In general I agree with you, I often see the same general outfits everywhere I go in my area, so when I see something different it is always very refreshing. I can't even keep up if I tried to count how many people wearing jeans I see in a day.

Oh, how interesting. I like people watching. In my area (Northern Italy) I notice the same things as you: a lot of black especially in Winter, jeans and sneakers all around. I try to keep black at minimum (I like colors but sometimes it is difficult to find an alternative to black), I wear jeans occasionally and I do not own sneakers - I have a poison eye for them. By the way some days ago at the airport I noticed that 90% of women were wearing jeans + sneakers. I was also wearing jeans (+ slip-ons). I decided never more to travel in jeans! Today: navy pullover, blue pinstripe pants, blue ballet flats.

I love people-watching too (my dad passed along his love of that activity to me), and really appreciate people wearing interesting outfits, no matter what elements comprise the outfit!

Frankly, it would be hard to find a day when I'm not wearing something black or denim. Oh well. I add interesting bits via jackets, bags, shoes, and tops. I wear sneakers sometimes, but they are far from my default.

I don't see myself ever giving up black and denim!

This is interesting. People don't wear much black around me in San Francisco, especially not in my hipster neighborhood. So for me, it's more distinctive. I wear all black, and many of my friends do too (punks / goths who grew up), so in that sense I'm blending in with a particular "tribe." I suspect that a lot of them expressed themselves with punk clothes, etc, when they were younger to mark their differences from mainstream culture.

(And of course we all have to be different in exactly the same way! My own motivations are less clear. I think I just don't like making decisions about colors?)

Anyway, if I moved back east, or to Scandinavia, would I feel too conventional in my black clothes and decide I wanted to express myself some other way? Interesting to think about.

I wear all three regularly but usually try to have a color element in my outfits. I like brights and jewel tones, and I even have a purple wool coat (kind of pink-ish or raspberry). I also wear a lot of navy/ink or grey. I don't embrace black as much as the rest of NYC.

I've noticed sneakers in particular becoming super popular! I'm hoping to add some more in fun colors. I just got some hot pink/purple sketchers and old also like something silver. Plus I have some green ones. There are so many sneaker options that I don't feel they have to be like a uniform, though I sure do see the classic Adidas every right now (which means I will steer clear). I walk a lot and have fussy feet, so this trend is a godsend to me.

Silver, of course you can look fab in black, denim and sneakers. No doubt about that. But there are also many other ways to look fab. And it can be refreshing and inspiring to see people who are wearing different items than the majority. I usually don't commend people (and especially not strangers) for what they are NOT wearing, but rather, as I said in par. 3, "for their individual style."

I can imagine choosing an outfit I feel fab in that includes at least 2 of those 3 items. Yet despite the fact that I happily dress for myself - rather than for the entertainment of strangers - it would bring down my mood were I to overhear a fellow traveler being commended for not wearing items I so carefully chose and felt great in. We never know what is behind the choices others make. Perhaps the real courage was getting on the bus in the first place.

Wearing black denim and sneakers as I write this, but it's my basement cleaning outfit (along with ratty tee). Though to be fair, I wear denim just about every day, and often it's black or charcoal. In summer, I tend to wear light or mid blue and white denim.

Greenjeans I think your comment about black and East vs West Coast is very astute. Black feels too cold and severe for southwestern light. I wore very little black when I lived in Nevada, subbing in dark brown, olive, and eggplant as my dark neutrals. Now that I'm back in New England, I wear black, navy, or both almost every day. I think once you get further north in California, black starts looking for okay again. Certainly ubiquitous in Portland and Seattle, though maybe not to the same, almost comical, degree as in New York.

I'm still in lounge wear -- no black, denim, or sneakers! Olive hoodie, white tee, brown yoga pants. Not surprisingly, these purchases all date back to when I lived in the Southwest.

Tisa, yes, people here wear black year round, but less so in summer. However, in summer there will be more denim and sneakers to see :-)

For me and many others, black is an important basic colour in winter. In spring and fall, I prefer grey. In summer, I try to use my white basics as much as possible. And year round, I aim to incorporate at least one non-neutral to my outfit.

I, too, love people-watching, and, when I'm in town, my usual vantage point is at a window seat in an upstairs cafe, while sipping coffee!

I don't see a preponderance of black, but, certainly, there are more dark colours than light. Denim is ubiquitous, though (nothing wrong with that, of course). Most are in some kind of flat footwear - plenty of boots - but sneakers are mostly seen on the under-thirties.

Like you, I zone in on anyone who is wearing colour, or is attractively or stylishly dressed. They don't have to be fashion forward, just interesting and/or well-put-together. They are few and far-between!

To answer your question, I am not wearing anything black, but I am wearing denim - my everyday, at-home jeans, a simple sweater and, at the moment, slippers! So nobody is likely to nominate me for a style award today, unless it's from the dog! but I do make an effort to look presentable, even when just pottering about at home.

Thank you all for commenting. And kudos to all who have the courage and creativity to, at least some of time, wear other items than black or denim ones or sneakers! :-)

DonnaF, yes, by "black", I primarily refer to solid black.

Nice to hear that there are parts of the world where most people don't wear black. Unfortunately, here in Scandinavia black has been a favourite colour for years. Often a sad sight, as black can look very harsh against most Scandinavians' pale skin and light hair.

Joy, I have made the same observations at the symphony etc. here: Lots of black trousers and other black items. If you wear a colourful outfit, you are sure to get attention (whether you like it or not). Often, you will actually receive appreciative gazes and comments!

Barbara Diane, I think most Scandinavians no longer feel an absolute need to change their shoes in the office. In many workplaces here, it is "casual Monday", "casual Thirsday", and so on ... But I have to add that much of my people watching is done in weekends, and several of those I see at the large bus station are going to, or have been, travelling for HOURS, by bus, train and/or plane. However, when walking in the city in rush hours in the middle of the week, I notice the same: a sea of black, denim and sneakers. :-)

Rachylou, "don't worry, be happy!" - or, should I say "dress to make yourself and others happy!"? -:) Most people seem to response positive to colours. In view of this, as wisely mentioned by Suz, it is truly a paradox that so many of us often avoid wearing other colours than denim blue and black.

Such an interesting observation.
I can't completely avoid black at the moment, because the shoes and the handbag I wear most often are black.

I'm not wearing any black clothing today, though (at least not where it's visible). My outfit is navy blue, white, and cognac. With a tan trench coat on top.

Do people at your place prefer black all year round? In our 4 season climate, black is a popular colour in winter months, but in summer you would see it more rarely, while spring and summer fall somewhere in between in that regard.

For me black is the basic neutral in winter, but in summer I prefer white or blue instead.

Now that's interesting. I'm getting curmudgeonly (or more so) maybe. I get a little fearful when I see people on the street looking bright and shiny and colorful. I get afraid they're gonna get mugged... but then I moved to Metropolis from the 'burbs, where I was afraid the other way...

Black Pants-often. At one time the only color I owned. Wearing them today. Not as often in spring/summer. But I prefer my non-black non-navy pants now.

Sneakers-One of the things I wear sometimes. I have a pair of cuter Nikes and a colorful pair of Vans. Not wearing them today.

Denim. I own one pair. I wear when it's under 65-70 degrees.

Are women wearing sneakers to commute and changing in the office-since you mentioned you are people watching at the bus stop?

Not wearing black, denim or sneakers. Light coral crops, light coral patterned hoody and bare feet that were in lamb slippers. I look for women not wearing black pants or skirts at the symphony. It's what the majority, especially women over 40, are wearing.

Not a lot of black where I live (U.S. West). I remember moving here from the East Coast many years ago and feeling like I caught some stares for my black leather jacket. Browns, greens and other softer colors seem more prevalent here. So over time I've come to see black as an East Coast, Boston/NY/DC urban thing. Perhaps Pacific NW as well? Now, completely assimilated, black no longer feels like me and I don't wear except for yoga pants and some shoes.

Another regional thing. Wide legs and bells are pretty ubiquitous here. Skinnies are common enough, but wide legs rule.

So by *black items* do you mean solid black? Or would non-black mean the total absence of black? (Asks the one who is wearing a black bodysuit with a white skeleton pattern on it.) But I'm in the jeans that give me the least muffin, given the nature of my top.

I have certainly noticed this. Black is ubiquitous in urban landscapes. In winter it is impossible to get away from it here in the form of black puffers and black boots. I live in a grey city and respond to colour, so this makes me sad.

Sneakers are the shoe of the moment! In the big city the other day, almost every young woman I saw was wearing Stan Smiths. Or similar. With black jogging pants or jeans.

I must admit that I wear denim almost every day myself in spring/ fall/ winter. (In summer I have more options and wear denim less because it is too hot most days). I also wear my sneakers a lot at this transitional time of year.

Here's a paradox for you. Lately, I find myself turning more and more towards "uniform" dressing for my at home work wear. I am wearing navy and denim or navy and white, pretty much all of the time. Despite this, I am saddened by the uniform nature of other people's sartorial choices. How's that for hypocrisy? I want variety in my people watching!

(In fairness to myself, I do tend to wear different cuts and colours when I venture forth into the big world...)

I don't spot too much black denim in SoCal though quite alot of black leggings!

I'm wearing natural/cream denim, and my trusty Rick Owens chunky black sneaker boots.

New cropped black jeans today. Two out of 3. They are new and believe it or not, I think possibly my first ever pair of black jeans at age 56. Today is a public holiday for us, Anzac Day. Relaxing. Never wear jeans during the work week. And often not black. And usually not sneakers.
