Pencil skirts are still a wardrobe staple for me. I work in a conservative, business formal setting, where I frequently wear a skirt and blazer. Most of my pencil skirts are neutrals, but I also enjoy wearing red and cream wool flannel pencil skirts. In addition, I have a black leather Theory pencil skirt that is lovely with tall boots and chunky sweaters in winter. MM LaFleur’s cobble hill pencil skirt is a great fit, and I own several, having purchased a new one at the end of 2024. I also enjoy wearing tube skirts, and have two from Athleta that are knee length.

For variety, I also like short, pleated wool skirts and have them in black and lavender. This fall, I found a new one in olive from Pendleton. See photo below.

I vote yes to the pencil skirt and hope you can find one you like!

Personally, I prefer a straight skirt with a back vent - this style was my work uniform for over 45 years - shortest length I wore was just below my knee. Best wishes to all.

I've had several over the years, but stopped. That's because more than any other item I have ever owned, they all need tailoring. Otherwise the back will slowly hitch to the front while you just walk a few blocks.

I love the idea of a leather/faux leather one, AND I would say get a black one, but also a color you want. If only one, then black. You can take that in so many directions.

If you don't do online thrifting, may I suggest Poshmark. Those items will surely be on there.

I have a hunch that you'll look great in a pencil skirt, I like Lisa's suggestions on how to play around with unexpected combinations. Pencil skirts have most often been associated with office wear but they certainly don't need to be.
I'm curious to hear how you're now feeling about pencil skirts after this discussion.

Aside from styling, my issue with pencil skirts is a proper fit. Pencil skirts are tailored garments and should fit a wearer well, hard to achieve with an item from a rack. Maybe I saw too many ill fitted pencil skirts in my time working in offices. Obviously, the fabric ones can be altered but not a leather skirt.

Oh I like what Angie said about pencil skirts being the cigarette pants and sheath dresses of skirts! Anyway, I have two I can think of that I have kept for years and perhaps they will come out more this year, since I am also feeling cigarette pants (never have been much a sheath dress wearer though).

I am not a skirt gal personally but I do like all the styling potential a classic pencil skirt can have. Especially mixing up a classic pencil skirt with something more unexpected like a hoodie or plaid shirt, instead of say a form fitting knit or silk blouse. I think you'd have a lot of fun playing around with the styling options of a pencil skirt, especially one in a favorite color for you. I wish you luck in your search!

I gave away all my knee length pencil skirts a few years ago. They just felt too officewear-ish and almost impossible to wear in a casual way. I do now have some longer pencil skirts in mesh, and one in gold, that read very non-office to me. I treat the mesh skirts as cold weather wear and wear them with boots. I also have some long denim skirts and a cargo skirt, but they are more a-line in shape. I find for warm weather I prefer ease of movement and length for sun coverage. The gold skirt is a bit of an exception, it’s for a wedding coming up in March.

Carla, you would rock a leather pencil skirt. I encourage you to keep an eye out for the one that calls your name.

This is an example of where my life and personality don't match what flatters me. I absolutely love how a sheath dress looks on me. And the knee-length pencil skirt is my best skirt look, full stop. I have one sheath dress in my closet that I can't bear to part with, despite the fact that I haven't worn it in several years.

I don't have any knee-length pencil skirts. I like them with classic pumps and hose or tights, a slim pullover or a blouse with cardigan sweater. They are for a fantasy life that I am unlikely to inhabit.

On me I preferred a fitted pencil that went in under the knee, almost more of a wiggle style. I wore this a fair bit when I had more of a retro influence - but not sure if I would go back to this now.

I'm with the others! Carla, you'd rock a pencil skirt :)

My 2 cents:

A pencil skirt is a CLASSIC in neutrals. Less so in non-neutrals,

The silhouette is ALWAYS there, like cigarette pants and sheath dresses. In fact, pencil skirts are the cigarette pants and sheaths of skirts!

Wear them if you like them! DYOT.

Sometimes they have a fashion moment and are all age rage, and sometimes they take a backseat. Not important. Again. Wear them with a happy heart if they are for you!

They differ in silhouette. Some are tailored, and others body con. Some call them column or straight skirts.

Lengths vary depending on the trends. At the moment LONG and SHORT are trendy. Knee-lengths are the benchmark classic.

Utility and denim pencil skirts are casual.

Personally, I doubt I will buy and wear a pencil skirt again - like sheath dresses. I last wore a pencil skirt in 2018. (A sheath in 2012). Had a turquoise Summer cotton lace pencil skirt that covered the knee. Looked great and was very pretty! Felt awful. I was very constricted. I need volume on the bottom for dresses and skirts! For life with doggies, walking, and working with clients - there must be movement on the bottom half of my body.

Cigarette pants I wear and love! They work for my active life. Not constricting.

I have a stretchy tube skirt left, but it's midi length, not knee length. BC-19 I wore them all summer, but was in the office more then. Longer skirts with volume enough to move easily, and that work well with flat sandals, are much more practical now.

I also don't love the look of anything knee length or above (on me), cause it breaks up the line of the body and I look shorter.

The denim ones with high slits in front look extremely impractical. First too warm for summer, second cause slits are much higher when one is sitting.

I gave away the last of my pencil and tube skirts years ago and never looked back. I wear skirts in summer and these narrower styles just aren’t my favorite for casual wear. I don’t anticipate getting one again.

Since my legs are so short, I have found that proportion wise short pencil skirts work much better with my longish blazers than pants. Wider skirts just look bulky. Unfortunately, narrow skirts aren’t that forgiving of weight fluctuations.

Most leather skirts I’ve seen over the years have been slightly A-line often with buttons down the front, versus straight.

I don't see the length as awkward at all; however, I only have one left after donating them all. And the one that's left is Chaiken, charcoal wool knit. I had it pinned to take in at Nordstrom, probably 10 years ago, but never had the alteration done...perhaps I'll get motivated now that I finally found tall boots!

I donated all of my pencil skirts a few years ago, and don't see adding any more in to my wardrobe. I forget where, but I did see some in a retail shop in the last couple weeks. I wore the heck out of them early in my career, probably through to maybe a decade ago. I had a lot of skirted suits, plus separates, and I did just love them for a long time. I have two skirted suits still (!) but it's been a LONG time since I've donned them. Should donate those as well. I much prefer trousers today, with a neat blouse or sweater, and I do continue to love and wear blazers, which is the item I use to professionalize ensembles when that is required for meetings.

They may not be actively IN style at certain points in time but I can’t see them ever being conspicuously OUT of style either. They just seem like something to wear if you like it. Go for it! A leather one seems fab (though probably not so comfy physically for me).

Do Your Own Thing but I personally find that pencil skirts are not versatile and hard to style, especially if one’s wardrobe more on a classic side. I would say that a pencil skirt in denim is much easy. A classic denim skirt can be styled with flats, boots or Converse and worn with any top.

Last summer, after trying on dozens of longer length denim pencil skirts that were trending, I ended up going for knee-length denim pencil skirt in the end. I found the heavier denim fabric felt too confining and hotter in the longer length. Often the slits in the front were too revealing especially when sitting. I also like the ease of movement with the shorter length. My practical side always has a say in my clothing choices.

Ultimately, I think it boils down to whether you like and enjoy wearing this type of silhouette or not, because pencil skirts might not always be trending but they are a true classic and so they could have a place in your wardrobe.

ETA: I think a pencil skirt looks fab with tall boots and a bomber jacket for a casual vibe.

This is serendipitous! I was just contemplating how I didn't reach for any of my pencil skirts this winter. (I have 3. One black, one gray, and 1 black and cobalt), I am not parting with them yet, but I am not interested in wearing them either.
I also have a black leather skirt. Looking at Val's link that might be something I could revive.
But seriously, those skirts are straight-up knee-length. I am with you Val, rolling my eyes at the "awkward" comment.

I like the pencil shape and have casual versions in denim and a knit. They have a classic feel. I like them for a bit of variety as most of my skirts have more volume.

Like Val I’ve been reading that pencil skirts are back. I personally find a straight pencil hard to wear. I did buy an A line denim skirt 2 years ago. I think of an A line as pencil skirt adjacent, but that A shape is, for me, more forgiving and wearable.
I would think that if you wanted a classic that would work for many years I’d look for something that hit at or just below the knee. And I think a brown leather (or leather like) would be perfect. Make sure you do a good walk and sit test!

I keep reading in fashion articles that pencil skirts are back, but don’t see any on the streets (though I don’t go to fashion forward places now).
Maybe these can help with choice and styling.
Very funny how they call it “awkward length”, when I remember midi was “awkward” and straight knee length was considered the most flattering and easy to wear skirt.
