Like you say, we know clips and the like are there, but it helps to actually see it. However, they commonly use clips like that when fitting gowns and wedding dresses and then do alterations or order another dress based on measurements. While I do agree that it would be nice to know how the garment looks without alterations, arm holes are tricky things that can easily be too big or too small depending on the person. I can understand why they sometimes have to alter the look on a model. The model was teeny tiny, most likely a size 0, and the dresses to be modeled were probably a 4-6 -- almost big enough for me to wear. This happened a bit ago with one of the fashion spreads in a sewing pattern magazine I subscribe to - you could see the blue clips fitting the garment to her.
