I dont think pearls will ever go out of fashion....just different styles look more 'current' than others (and equally great, imo!)

I think pearls are always in. Nordstrom has some great glass pearl necklaces. And if you don't like full strands of pearls, you can always get one pearl as a pendant necklace. I have two pearls as pendants.

Yay on pearls from me! Sometimes I like to go all ladyvlike and wear my pearls in a very conservative way but other times I like to add pearls were you wouldn't normally to create something a little unexpected.

Small But Mighty, I love the sound of that last outfit you described -- please share a pictue sometime if you can!

I have a bunch of pearls, all but a couple of sets inherited from my mom ( and her mom and other relatives), and I've struggle with the "conservative" vibe of them. They are lovely though, so I'd welcome any ideas on wearing them with some edge.

Thanks a lot hillview! Now I can't get pearls off my mind. I'm wearing them right now and can't get over being scared to wear them out of the house! Maybe we need to start a pearl challenge like: "if you have pearls and you love them but don't wear them as often as you like, take the challenge to wear them every day for a month." Or something like that. You must be younger if you don't have a strand. What kind would you get? What would you wear them with?

Hey, after about a month of lurking I joined JUST so I could weigh in on this issue!

Pearls are a definite YAY, I think, but as others have commented, you need to find the right ones and the right way to wear them. I hadn't trotted any of mine out for a while, but Angie has inspired me. I have a choker with a triple strand of largish, white, freshwater pearls that I love, but didn't wear too often. Now, with Angie's help, they're getting out to play much more. The other day I wore them with a black sheath dress and a cropped denim jacket with the collar popped and felt more fab than I'd felt in a long time!! The secret for me is to add the RATE touch (if I'm using the term correctly?) to balance their ladylike vibe so they don't cross over into prissy territory. Like Angie does! That's why some smaller, more conservative pearls I own probably still won't see much action.

Today, also very inspired by Angie and a forum member's picture I saw yesterday, I'm wearing a long grey pearl strand knotted, mixed with silver chains, over a graphic tee and jeans. I'm loving this new approach to making pearls rock!

bj1111, thanks for the link! I love pearls, but find myself rarely wearing mine. Just last night I had them out playing dress-up. I have a 18-inch strand of small pearls that I never felt right in.

Thanks to bj's article, I now see that they are a juvenille size and the length does not work for me. My other strand is much more subtantial, 30" of 8mm baroque pearls. The article said this "opera" length was traditionally only worn with evening attire. This is why I probably never wear them, even though I LOVE them and the length and size is perfect for my small-busted, long -necked frame. It went on to state that women are beginning to wear this kind of necklace with casual wear, so I'm determined to find a way to do this!

For the past few years, I have felt wearing pearls was "dated" but thanks to Angie's articles and example, I see there is a modern way to wear pearls. I'd like to see dianthus and others post pics of them wearing their pearls with "everything". Maybe you need the right kind of tops.

Pearls are a classic. The bigger question is if you feel pearls fit your individual style. If yes, definitely get some. If you are unsure, try a more economical piece to decide if you want to invest in a pricier piece.

Pearls are always in, but the size and length of the strand change. I like smaller ones that rest on my collarbone, that length never seems to get old and it mixes well when I want to layer.

After reading Angie's post on pearls and watching the video on tying pearls, I bought two long strands - one in black and one in cream. I wear them often as they are so versatile and work with almost everything I own.

I bought 72" shell pearls in 10mm and 12mm on e-bay for less than $50 each. I read a number of articles on shell pearls and they look and have the weight of real pearls for a fraction of the cost.
