Very few jewelers are familiar with pearls in any real way, and many of them cannot even tell you how different pearls are cultured. Additionally, I've never seen a brick and mortar jeweler who didn't overcharge for pearls, often of substandard quality.

I would check Pearl Paradise online. They have some of the best quality pearls at some of the best prices. Freshwater pearls will be the best price, though even at gem quality, their luster will not be as metallic as akoyas. Akoya pearls are saltwater pearls, and usually have a very metallic shine - to my eye they are unmistakable. South Sea pearls are generally larger (bead nucleated like akoyas, whereas freshwater are nacre all the way through) and have a satin-like sheen. They are often white but also come in shades of gold. Tahitian pearls are also larger and come in varying shades of grey/silver, peacock, brownish, and almost black.

If I were to invest in pearl studs, I'd go with the highest quality akoyas I could afford. And make sure you know what size you want, as it isn't as easy as one might think to estimate a mm size. I find that they look far larger on my ears than they sound, so I generally go smaller, but many other people prefer larger sizes.

You don't say where you live, but if you have access to a big city, there may be a Jeweler's building or other area where you could just go and look at many different pearls to get an idea of what is available.

coming back to edit, for earrings I might opt for fake or inexpensive real, because an earring can get lost so easily and perhaps opt for real in a necklace.

I also own 8 mm black Tahitian pearl earrings. People comment on their color and luster every single time I wear them. They were a gift so I can't say exactly how much they cost.

Look at the blog, Passage des Perles for some ideas. Freshwater pearls are less than Akoya pearls, but I don't think they have the same luster. I can shop at a military exchange where they sell Blue Lagoon pearls, which are a less expensive division of Mikimoto. They are beautiful. I think they are available at some jewelers such as Zales or Gordon's. I think you need to see pearls in person. I love my pearl studs, have several pair. Like Sterling, I've bought them over the years so I'm not sure what a good price is. $200? It would depend on the quality and size. I did buy a pair of black Tahitian pearls a few years ago, maybe an 8 or 9 mm, and I think they were $400. Can't remember.

You won't regret owning a pair of stud earrings. You might want to start with white and decide if you want to expand from there.

I have multiple sets of pearl studs (all real). I do buy the best quality I can afford, but truthfully, the sets I bought early in life lack the luster of the ones I buy today. You can't tell a difference in quality when I am wearing them, I just know because I can compare them side by side.

Because I bought them over the years, I can't say what pearl studs cost today. I do know I bought all of my earrings from reputable jewelry stores. Although I would love to have a pair of Mikimoto, I can't rationalize the price and I am quite happy with my present collection. Go to the store, compare lusters and you'll know your pearls when you see them.

My stud collection includes various sizes (very tiny purchased early in life and quite large). I wear the large ones most frequently because they have become a statement. I also own white (not yellowish or cream) and dark grey. I wear both colors equally. I tend to wear the white more during summer months and the grey more during winter months.

I love them. I noticed that many women at work have copied my style when it comes to wearing pearls.

I'm thinking of purchasing some basic, classic pearl studs, but am finding myself a bit overwhelmed by what's out there. I do know that I would like real pearls of some variety, not faux, but I don't know that I care (or would be able to tell!) the difference between levels of quality beyond that. What's a reasonable amount to expect to spend? Are there stores or sources that any of you can recommend (or warn against)?
