Thanks! I feel a bit better Frankly, I can't see a hourglass in myself. Maybe there's some waist definition, but it's hidden between all these lumps and bumps.

Ironically, I never wanted to be curvy! My dream body is tall and skinny - and my mom, being a textbook rectangle and taller than me, wanted to be shorter and curvier. Now that's not fair

Hi, I'm also half pear/half hourglass. My shoulders are wider than my hips, but I have large thighs and a big butt, so I'm definitely a pear on the bottom. My bottom half is definitely more prominent than my top half. Both are very sexy body shapes, so we are lucky ladies!

Maya, I think you're right. The first thing I notice when looking in the mirror are my huge hips and thighs (my mom tells me that I'm obsessed...) - I'm confused about my body type just because I feel like a big, shapeless lump of fat without any shape. I'm suspecting a pear with apple tendencies, though (or maybe the other way round). My measurements are: 114 cm shoulders, 107 cm bust, 76 cm waist, 109 cm hips, 87 cm inseam. I'm 170 cm tall.

Sorry, I don't want to sound like a whining emo kid. I'm in the middle of losing weight and there's still much to do, my goal is EU size 34.

Unfortunately, I borrowed my camera and I'm still waiting to have it back! I'll post my pics as soon as possible.

I'm not so sure it's that cut and dry. I think it's less about what is "wider" and more about what is more prominent. You could measure your shoulders and hips and find that your shoulders are slightly wider, but your hips are curvier. I think actually having narrower shoulders than hips is VERY rare. They just carry less weight visually.

It is commonly believed that hourglasses transform into pears with weight gain, because the extra weight is carried in the lower half. Similarly rectangles who gain tend to turn into apples. But I am an hourglass who doesn't have very curvy hips at all and that doesn't change with weight gain. I have a curvy backside but that's it. I will never be a pear. Nothing is ever universally true when it comes to body type. It's easiest to just eyeball it, so I hope you post a pic!

thanks for answering my question :)

So, if my shoulders are a bit bigger than my hips or thighs, I'm not a pear. I guess I have to start another thread with my pictures to know what I really am.

Perfect explanation, Michelle.

Welcome, itari. It's all about the width of your hips and thighs compared to the width of your shoulders. So to answer your question, all of the above. Does that make sense?

I'm going to hazard an explanation with the understanding that I could be dead wrong. Angie, if I am, please set everyone traight!!

My understanding is that it's more a matter of overall proportions than anything else. Hourglasses have hip and shoulder measurements that are proportional to each other, while pairs have hip measurements that are a little bigger than the rest of the body. I am an extra curvy hourglass, which means that while my waist is the smallest part of my body, my hips and shoulders are still not what you'd call small (in fact they're likely bigger than some trim pairs). As a result, I still have to consider a lot of pair guidelines when dressing myself in hourglass-friendly styles (there's a fair bit of overlap, at least). Someone like Angie, on the other hand, who is smaller all around, can play more with rectangle guidelines because her hips are nowhere near pair territory. In other words, it's not so much about hip measurements on their own as about hip measurements relative to the rest of the body.

Hope that made at least a little bit of sense.

hello everyone ;)

This is my first post, although I've been lurking for a while. After reading some tips on the body shapes (and discovering that pears don't have to be flat-chested!) I fell in love with ylf ;)

I'm wondering... what's the difference between a pear and a hourglass below the waist? Saddlebags? Thigh shape? Weight distribution?
