There is this funny little historical moment thing they show on PBS... it's a Neiman's Christmas gift from the '60s - a computer for your kitchen for your recipes. The thing about it is, you had to program it with cards in binary and the output was in binary too! Lol Imagine your devil's food cake recipe in all 1s and 0s! Lololol!

My husband had a PT job at NM when he was in grad school. The best part IMO was the huge discount he got!

When I first moved to Texas in the 70s, I went to the NM in Houston at Christmas time. I remember seeing a dollhouse that had electric lights, and all the furniture. It was selling for more than real houses in the town I lived in.

One day I'll write a post of some of my favorite Neiman Marcus experiences. Would you believe I got my kids' birthday cakes there when they were little? It was quite the institution back when it was privately owned.
Today, it's a much more mainstream corporate organization, but still has the best sale racks in town!
I like Payless, too, but the one convenient to me closed some time ago.

I hope Neiman's keeps going. They are the best place for a good selection of quality clothing for mature women. I go shopping there for my Mom. I keep thinking of exploring their site for myself. But I am still hooked on Shopbop. Probably will age out of them soon.

And I agree, Payless is great for non-slip work shoes. I buy mine from Amazon, maybe that is evil of me.

As kkards said, it's a restructuring, not a liquidation. So they will continue to operate while the bankruptcy proceeds. They have filed a plan to get relief from some debt, get out of the leases on the stores they want to close, and move forward as a smaller company. It looks like the number of stores they plan to close is less than 10% of the total. Once they emerge from bankruptcy they will continue to operate as a smaller business. Hopefully, they will be left with enough operating cash to be able to provide the products and service their customers have come to expect, though in fewer locations.

Yes, brick and mortar retail sales are down, but the bigger problem for Payless and some of the others is that they were purchased by a group of private equity firms, which used to be called by the more descriptive name of "leveraged buyout" firms, who loaded the company with debt to cover most of the price the firms paid to buy the retailer from its precious owner. But if the business hits a rough patch, like virtually all B&M retailers have recently, the whole thing collapses and they have to file for bankruptcy protection.

This is happening all over retail. Neiman Marcus is on the block for sale, too, and the speculation is that if Hudson's Bay doesn't buy them, they'll be filing for bankruptcy protection, too.

Brick-and-mortar stores have become showrooms for many customers who prefer to try on or touch in person, but order online because it's cheaper online. The stores are being exploited instead of supported. No wonder they end up closing. I see this mostly in yarn stores where people will come in, touch the yarn, and order on their phone from someplace else that sells it for less (often because it's an online-only business with much lower overhead). I figure it's even more prevalent in RTW stores simply because of demographics.

I love Payless! I hope they don't close. I have ballet slippers from there that are super comfortable, don't fall off my feet, always get compliments, and have lasted for 4-5 years now. Although not all their shoes are so comfortable or durable. Also, I like to try out trends on the cheap with their shoes.

My Fashion Era Challenge shoes for the '40s came from Payless! They are under comfortable heels. I do hope this is not their end. It's true about extended sizes and shoes for growing children.

... and that's frightening about stores becoming obsolete. I have never been in a situation where mail order is convenient. It's always a production to get packages. Nooooo!

Oh, I hope they stay. It's seriously been an important store for my family, having better choices than Walmart at affordable prices. (Four fast-growing kids go through a lot of shoes.) And oddly, their heels fit my feet better than so-called comfort brands.

Rachy...I don't know. But they have filed in the past and come out of it. Your post coincided with a discussion on our local NPR radio channel yesterday : how brick and mortar stores are just being annihilated. That the ones that are doing well are really high end ( Tiffany's ) and low end ( Wal Mart ). Sears is almost dead, Macy's, JC Penney...it goes on and on. Apple of course is doing really well too in its stores.

Where I live, stores are becoming a thing of the past and if you want decent clothes , you have to drive to where the big upscale malls are ( at least 40 mins away ).
