OMG these responses are so wonderful and helpful! I had no idea how great this would be visually. Janet's floral patterns are close relatives of mine with those intense moody colors.

My patterns are plaids, snake, galaxy, feather/peacock, forests and trees, Indian fabrics (not the ubiquitous hippie bedsheet but bandhini and other traditional ethnic styles) and certain florals. I also have a weakness for bright Liberty and Missoni prints. I'm pretty cautious with stripes.

Here are a few from my Finds, some of which I own. There are many more!

Heh. I could do this all day. But I should prob do some work so here you go.

https://www.pinterest.com/akab.....ye-prints/

I like art nouveau designs, William Morris/Liberty, botanical prints, Japanese prints, dark florals. Lots of curbing lines and not too much regularity.

ETA: I also have a lot of "simpler" prints like stripes and plaid but I think of them more as "basics" (as much as a print can be basic) and not irrational love sugar eye things. The "basics" are good for pattern mixing and the like.

I love patterns that are organic, abstract, dark and moody. I favor cool palettes of blues/blacks/greys, with some bold reds/purples hues. I also have a love for graphic Pucci patterns, although I tend wear them mostly as accents-- sometimes a dress feels like I would wear it less because it would stand out so much as such a statement piece.

Naturalistic animal prints, usually leopard have always been in my wardrobe. For winter patterns I like classic plaids (black watch & red/black tartan) and for all seasons a Breton stripe.

In the summer I gravitate towards traditionally inspired ethnic Mexican, Moroccan, Scandinavian tribal patterns, as long as they are authentic feeling, if that makes sense. Patterns that are monochromatic or have analogous colors I find tend to have a nice balance of visual interest and quite tonality.

I also have a crazy affinity for classic Hawaiian aloha patterns, both the floral and bark cloth!

1st of all, I love crazy floral pants! it's a realization i just had this year...but most of my pattern clothing is pants. I think its because to me, it kind of feels safe, because 1)most of the day I'm sitting, so know one really see's it, 2)its patterns, but not near my face. this is the only pair of florals I have finds, but also own a black and white floral pair from target, and a pair of navy and white skinnies from talbots. i also love the "camo" shorts below, and i also have a pair of camo pants.

I love me some crazy pants! I figured out a couple of years ago that I prefer bold patterns on the bottom, and usually stick to geometrics or softer patterns on top. This may seem the reverse of traditional "plus size" fashion advice. But hectic patterns on top don't feel like me - they're too costumey or romantic or clown or upholstery like for me. The black and pink floral tunic is probably the exception - but the pattern works for me and I love the fit. But I tried its "sister" and that pattern - a busy art deco - I hated on me.

Below are samples of what I have in my closet or have been considering. I'm wearing the olive crazy pants today!

In the meantime I ordered this cardigan (in the cream colorway) despite the fact that I don't wear cardigans bc I've literally been thinking about that print for weeks and then it went on sale. I figure it can just be a cold-lab cardigan if nothing else.

Janet's, Brooklyn's, and texstyle's patterns all appeal to me. I like plaids, stripes, dark florals, southwestern geometrics, and subtle natural prints. I definitely gravitate towards lower contrast. (Only a few of these pieces are in my closet, but I pulled them all out of my current Finds.)

In addition to my love of that marble I posted, here is some of what I actually have in my closet...

Blue, grey, black, beige, and more blue. Just a touch of yellow, orange or green. Small prints, sometimes so small that they read like textures, either geometric or natural subjects. Low contrast mostly, A little bit of stripes. I do wear plaids/checks once in a while also.

ETA: I am drawn far more often to solids or mostly solids with a stripe. If I am wearing a pattern, I love to partly hide it, e.g. patterned top but with a jacket over it. I feel less comfortable when it is all pattern on top.

In the fall/ winter I tend to use scarves for my hit of pattern if I need it.

I do like patterned bottoms but don't own enough of them right now. I tend not to tire of pattern on the bottom as much, though I am also even pickier about it.

Also, I have things to say about pattern up top and my grey hair. For me, grey is making me steer away from patterns that are mostly colour (with no neutral background). I need a neutral ground and fewer colours in the pattern.

This would not necessarily hold true for you. I'll explain when I'm able to create the post once DD brings camera home again....

My favourite pattern is the ubiquitous horizontal stripe. I love love love it. I even have a striped cashmere scarf.

I also like hits of plaid and especially gingham. Plaid gets more love in winter and gingham in summer.

I'm drawn to toile-like patterns or Oriental motifs in blue and white.

I like abstract geometrics.

I even like some whimsical prints (cat shirts).

I also like florals but I tend to tire of them more quickly so should not spend much on them except maybe for scarves.

Pre-grey hair I'd use animal print as a way to tie my hair and a dark element into outfits but with my grey hair I expect that might change. It wasn't so much love of the pattern in itself that drove me to choose it -- more it's usefulness for making outfits. I'll probably find some alternative now.

What's consistent (for me):

Usually the pattern involves one colour and one or two neutrals, sometimes with a few other colours as well, but rarely a lot.

Almost always, it involves blue, and if it doesn't, it's likely to be black or charcoal or grey and white.

This is a fun exercise, Una. When people add their finds it gives a great snapshot of their style and a particular element that makes it what it is. I mean...compare Staysfit's soft florals and fine geometrics to Janet's florals on a dark background!

Pattern choices are so individual and indicative.

Chris, I love that marble -- beautiful colors. And Joy's watercolor prints too! And I think I'm going to have to steal everything in Brooklyn's post. :-)

I'm getting pickier about prints. Some just age in my closet too quickly, while others keep my love for eons (I have a beautiful silk marbleized blue print blouse from Lafayette 148 that must be a dozen years old, and even though I don't wear it much anymore, I adore it and will not part with it). I like paisley, but there is not much around lately.

I have to be really careful that I don't let my love for a print drive me too hard -- more than once I've bought an item because I love the print, even though the cut is not great on me. Printed pants from a few years back, I'm looking at you.

I like some plaids, animal prints, low contrast stripes, low contrast earthy patterns and the occasional ethnic type print like Moroccan tile or Scandinavian designs.

The navy/white plaid is about as high contrast as I can stand to wear and I must admit I don't reach for patterns nearly as much as my solids.

Besides stripes, especially grey and cream like Sterling, I like watercolory abstracts and architectual scenes. The last is rare these days, but I will try to find some examples. I'm not drawn to prints that repeat.

These photos show some of the marble used in St Nicholas Church in Ghent, Belgium. I took these photos the day after Christmas in 2015. It's a gothic cathedral, built between the 13th and 15th centuries

Not exactly sure why I love this color combination, but I do. The muted red/grey/cream just seems gorgeous to me. It is quite unusual compared to all the other marble I've ever seen. I have been doing a "lazy search" for clothing items with similar colors. Janet's Burberry Brit shirt seems to be in a similar color scheme, as well as staysfit's tweed skirt.

Janet I'm making a connection now between this marble and many of your selections.....hmmm...no wonder I like the prints you choose.....I'm going to study your finds list some more.

What Janet said except for the stripes and plaid (I can take or leave them). I really like bold and graphic prints, especially geometric and Aztec inspired patterns. And especially in black and white. I like dark Ombre patterns and space dye (if they count as patterns). Anything missoni-ish that is not too neon. I am also partial to animal print, especially leopard and zebra prints. Here are a few of mine.

Dark plaids, moody or abstract florals, watercolor-ish prints, some mirrored/photographic patterns, some geometrics, some stripes, marbleized effects, and not-twee versions of birds, butterflies, etc. And anything that evokes patina or stone/marble/minerals.

I have no idea what these patterns have in common but I'm attracted to all of them. Maybe abstract floral, maybe impressionistic. A lot like my DD's colorful painting. Whatever-----this does it for me. I love these patterns and I'm not much of a pattern person.

I have one favorite pattern. Horizontal stripes in the same thickness in the colors of light grey and cream. No other pattern resonates with me so much. I have to literally stop myself from buying it every time I see it. Luckily, I don't see it as often as you would think.

I adore florals as well, but there is no single floral pattern that I buy repeatedly.

With regards to Diane's comment. I have a lot of solids in my wardrobe. Solids soothe me. I have never tired of them.

Ok, I probably need some time and I may get back to you. I commented on yesterday's blog post that I had too many solid colours in my wardrobe and I find myself craving a bit of pattern. I need to pin down which sort appeal to me. I'll be watching this thread.

I'm struggling to pin down this obsession with floral crazypants and am going to find and post the patterns I'm attracted to in hopes of finding the commonality.

Please post your favorite colored patterns here and feel free to describe what exactly makes you love them!
