Thanks, Jules "Pattern mixing" is not part of my native language, so breaking down the grammar is really helpful!

Am a little confused though. If "the skirt being the middle of the scale might also work with a false plain like a very small houndstooth" then why is it so underwhelming with the shirt, which is such a false plain that the stripes are imperceptible from a distance?

I like the stripes in the top, wish it was better quality so it'd last longer. I wish I could think of something to pair it with besides faded denim.

Items in the box are attached here as finds.I made sure everything is labeled correctly, so when the pic shows a top & a bottom, you can mouse over to see which one I meant.

I like all three tank tops.

I think the skirts are both going back.

It's been a long time since I tried rayon. I like Nic & Zoe, so the blouse is a test case.

The black/blue with triangles fits the formula. I haven't tried it on.

The flutter sleeve thing is ridiculous. I've gotten that sort of thing often enough to realize that even though it isn't "me", there is something about it that I find attractive. I "just" have to find out what it is. Meredith said that on the "favorite mistakes" post; she was right.

I have to wait to decide on the shorts. When I gain weight, I get apple shaped. As my pumpkin belly expands, the distance between it and my rib cage shortens. That is, my waist gets higher. On short-waisted me, these are booty shorts. On longer-waisted me, I think they'll be fine. I have 90 days (but the goal is to be "there" by Aug 18).

The dress is also waiting on body changes, in the same time frame. If I can't make it by Oct, then I'll accept that this is the bod I've got and return the dress.

I like the black & white sweater, got the same thing in green first (it's in my finds). In a cold place, they'd be layered under something else, with long Johns or a cami underneath. Here, they'll be winter sweaters. I don't think the $12.50 price tag convinced me, but it didn't hurt.

I'm cheating on the pants, found them in the store while returning other stuff, still have to decide in the same time frame.

Actually going back to your original outfit, while it's true neither pattern is a menswear false plain, I'd consider the top to be pretty close and the skirt is maybe a medium scale, medium contrast pattern. That's why Emily is suggesting a bold stripe with the skirt. The skirt being the middle of the scale might also work with a false plain like a very small houndstooth. On the other hand, think about how the top looks from a distance - do you really see a pattern anymore, or just 'texture'? I'd pair it with a bold large scale pattern. Picture for example a white skirt or pants with a bold floral in similar shades of blue.

I've got the boots, lol. I took extra pictures of those two items so you can see the scale of the patterns, but if you thought I'd wear them together, then we are having serious communication issues!

On the earlier batch of photos:

1 & 9 are a cotton tank top that I usually wear with nice black ankle pants, or sometimes with khaki or olive shorts.

2 & 10 are a skirt that I wear with layered tank tops, one in each color. I include it here mostly for the fun of thinking about mixing.

3 is a slip dress.

4 is the Nine West Fit n Flare dress in my finds.

5 & 11 are a jacket. During Florida "winter", I think it'll work with 1, 3, the striped dress and starry tank top in my finds, and a lot of my blue stuff.

6 is a skirt that almost reaches my knees.

7 is a sleeveless button up shirt

8 is a cotton sweater.

Are the finds what came in the box? 3-8, are those shirts, skirts...? I was just thinking about what I'd try and put with what. I wouldn't do the iris tank and diagonal stripe. Or well, possibly, but I think combat boots would be needed to unite them.

Barely ten minutes later, I've noticed a few not-so dominant patterns I can pair with others. "Not so dominant" because most of them aren't very big, they have just a couple of other colors, and are very regular. Cool! I want to learn to do this, would much rather not do it by shopping. It also seems that my sensibilities have been sneakily changing. There are a couple of things in this box I'm planning to go through later that just moved closer to tag-clipping because they will mix well, and I seem to have developed a thing for black/white patterns. 1-3 and 7-8 have been in my closet for a long time. 4-6 are acquisitions from the past year. (#6 has already been the topic of a discussion from my mother re whether I could wear brown with it or should stick with basic black.) I took extra shots of a couple things because I realized that there was no way to tell that the rugby stripes on the sweater are much bigger than the blue on blue mini skirt. Also added some finds, so you can see pattern scale of other pieces. The skirt will be a "practice piece", not something I'll wear out much, but might be fun to think through patterns with.

I just came across this. It explains perfectly why pattern mixing is hard for me. I'm trying to step in at the advanced level, lol. I don't have any of the false plains Angie mentions here--pinstripe, glen plaid, gingham. No polka dots at any scale. There either IS a pattern or nope, nothing. Something to think about next time I go shopping with intent to buy.

I don't know, fashiontern, maybe you should take my comment with a grain of salt I think that pattern mixing should be done with a degree of boldness so that people know you are being intentional about it!

I'd prefer to see a bit more contrast--both the top and the skirt have rather bitty patterns. But, the skirt has more dramatic color so I feel it washes out the top. If I were doing this, I might try for a black and white stripe top--maybe one inch wide stripes or wider, even? You'd need a plain topper for sure to avoid dipping into crazy-town (IMHO!) The topper you show would be ideal for that. :-)

Oh, the Hill Country! I escaped out there several times when I lived in Austin, but never could get down there with my son when we lived up in the panhandle. I'd much rather be there now.
I like the names / personas idea, rachylou. As I try on different styles, maybe I should come up with names for each. And eventually, when I don't feel like such an intern anymore, I could let one of them come to the fore as a new user name. Or maybe I'll be an interminable intern, lol.

Late add: In a few weeks/couple months, when the returns deadline is approaching, I'll have to try on some of these combos for a new post with pix of me wearing the stuff. What do you think I should try pairing?

*******************************

Original post: Breaking this rules has been cool as long i can remember. This is my first attempt at it, following the "new" not-rule guidelines. I can't get the pix quite right, so am taking them as we run errands, slipped off to the bathroom at my kid's dentist for one, haha. Gotta take the shirt along; besides the brutal AC, you never know when a shower might pop up.
