Thanks for posting this Chris. A velvet shirt would be great solution for me also and I really like everyone's styling ideas as I am really bad at styling. Personally I think I would wear it as a tunic type top with jeans or black pants and use jewelry, accessories, and shoes to bling it up.
Off to look for velvet shirts.

This velvet shirt is really beautiful. The colors are true to what you see in the finds. The burgundy one is a cool fuscia/berry color. Soft flowy velvet, very high quality as usual from Anthropologie.

I think the petite burgundy one I ordered is one size too big but I'm showing in in case anyone wants to get an idea of what it looks like. The fit is what I’d call fluid, not quite oversized but just a little loose. The sleeves are not too tight, even if you don’t have super slim arms as I do not, so very easy to roll/fold them up. The body length is great for a petite person like me. This style is just a bit too fluid for me, I want something a bit more structured. If you like to wear buttoned down shirts tucked, semi-tucked, or untucked , you might consider this. I also find wearing it untucked is just a bit too casual for what I had in mind. So it’s going back, but again is a really lovely piece for the right person.

the two photos show it unbuttoned and buttoned. I happened to be wearing a black turtleneck underneath but that's not how I'd style it

I do own a black velvet blazer that has the kind of structured fit I am thinking of, if I could find a similar one or some other structured velvet top in burgundy, dark blue, or forest green that would be perfect. NEXT.

Thanks for backing me up La P. I think some people find it hard to believe how casual New England style can be.

Great ideas Joy! I used to be able to wear the largest girls sizes although haven't tried in a while...I should check it out...

Wow, the red is rich- I’d usually pick that as my color, and do the black or denim with it, but isn’t the mint deliciously fresh and different? That might be great for New Year’s Day!

Ooo, I also must think of those casual-but-Festive holiday get togethers and have enjoyed wearing metallic jeans with a simple cashmere pull-over and booties or kitten heels, usually in black patten or pewter metallic. I like the ideas of a velvet top or jacket with plaid bottoms. A graphic holiday tee would be a great thing to have in the closet too. A long sleeved one may give you extra warmth. Be sure to look for them in large children’s sizes or small men’s sizes too. My favorite ( Snoopy with a tree) was thrifted. Perfect for a casual ornament exchange.

Suz those are all great ideas! Just waiting for delivery so I can see how they fit.

Delurked, I have a classic black velvet blazer and am thinking about your graphic T idea. as another option..A simple T would probably not be warm enough for me in winter but maybe a floral or other patterned sweatshirt in a slim fit...and I've had the same "overdressed" experience.

Jennie NZ yes bronze booties would be a great idea...

junipergreen that "mint" velvet shirt could be gorgeous with your green pants if the colors are right...

Janet yes, yes, yes....

jessikams good idea about tying the bottom, depending on the heft of the fabric...

lisa p the western idea is really cool, I'll have to think about that. Yeah I meant "best plaid shirts" quite literally. One neighbor who attends one of the parties in jacket, shirt, vest, and pants in mixed red/green plaids that don't really work together...like the eccentric uncle from some theater period piece. It's his version of "holiday outfit" I actually get quite a kick out of it while DH is wondering how the guy can leave the house looking like that.

Thanks Angie! Great ideas as always.

I love these shirts for you and think they will be wonderful. It is so much fun to see what people plan to wear for Christmas parties. I really like the styling suggestions you have and I hope that the red velvet skirt helps you to get some wear from your lovely black slip dress.

My Christmas is always hot - being in summer, so sun dresses or party dresses are the go. I am likely to wear the dress in finds because it has the traditional Christmas colours in it, without being too over the top.

I like the lace cami and bling necklace idea with pants, jeans and dressy shoes best. EASY. But a skirt and checked pants would be sublime. Throw in some fun hose too.

Giving a nod to the new western trend, it might be fun to try it buttoned, and belted overtop black jeans and boots ...with a new western/subtly jewelled or studded belt a la gryffin or suz. Let the belt hang a little low, and allow the velvet to drape and flow as it will naturally. And I'd make it all about the earrings or the belt in this case - letting the velvet be the star (I guess I'm a bit over blingy necklaces at the moment -ha). OK, now I want to create this outfit for myself

Really nice idea for a party outfit. People will want to touch your arms, I bet!
If the shirts are too long or floppy but you don’t want to tuck, you could try adding some structure by tying the bottom.

I like the idea of on what of these tops with sparkly boots and paid pants (stealing the idea since I have a black velvet button down that I love, and I think it will look great with the plaid Kuts). No need to tuck. Maybe unbutton one or two more buttons than usual and pop a lace cami or tank underneath?

Of course I like the idea of dark wash flare/bootcut jeans and sparkly boots too. Play with jewelry for additional shine.

I’ve got a velvet shirt I wear casually with a tank under it and camo leggings.

I’m planning to wear my open velvet blazer (rose colored) with a graphic tee and coated jeans, so we are definitely thinking along the same lines. If I was trying to dress it up I’d switch out the tee for a dressier cami.

My get togethers are all very casual as well, and when I’ve worn a dress, I’m usually overdressed compared to the others there. Sometimes that doesn’t bother me, but sometimes I like to blend in more.

I love your styling ideas. For myself, and for the occasion you mention, I'd probably wear with denim and some dressy booties (or sparkly sock booties for indoors?). I would tuck, too, so might wear a belt, but if I wore it untucked I would do as Sara suggested and add a necklace of some kind. LaPed reminds me that I might also wear with plaid pants.

the CAT, a lace top is a great idea. I have a white lace top that could work. You may be right about the velvet dress idea being too elegant, I will have to see what it looks like to decide.

suntiger, good ideas

always trying, yes you are right that the shirt could look like a jacket untucked, it all depends on how it fits. I was able to get the red one in a petite size but for the mint I had to go with regular sizing.

La P I like the plaid trouser idea..and I have some with a very tiny/subtle plaid that might work. Yeah, a sparkly necklace would be just right...not sure I have one but easy enough to find some costume jewelry like that.

Sara L - hmm...I don't normally do chunky necklaces but I do have a few of them I could try, good idea!

I'd wear it with a chunky blingy necklace. The velvet shirts sound perfect for the sort of party you describe.

I've been contemplating that same red velvet shirt to wear with black plaid flared trousers and burgundy boots -- for casual holiday parties much like you describe. I think your styling instincts are spot-on! Love your boot collection, too. Any thoughts for jewelry or other accessories? A little sparkly necklace perhaps?

Love them both. Since you do not wear them tucked I would wear them open with a tank or t under unless they are shorter on you like the model then maybe just buttoned up. if linger like my shirts are unless i can find petites, i think they look more like a jacket when untucked.

I like your idea, or with pants with some other tone on tone pattern. Or it could be worn open over a silky top too.

I would wear it open over a lace camisole or similar comfortable but feminine sleeveless top. Wear with whatever pants or jeans you like, and add some jewellery.

Stying it with your sleeveless velvet dress also sounds fine--but perhaps a bit too elegant for this occasion?

I usually have a few parties/events to attend between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, and typically go with a classic and slightly dressy style, but this year I want to do something different, and I'm starting now instead of waiting until the last minute like I usually do :-)

For most of these events a VERY casual style is totally appropriate. We're talking house parties where half the guys will be in their best plaid shirts and a few may have nicer sweaters, and the women will have a bit more variety but still in tunics/leggings, maybe a blazer/jeans look; no party dresses or fancy pumps.

I just found and ordered these two velvet button down shirts. I love velvet and think it’s lovely texture can be the star of an outfit without adding much other detail. I do NOT want floppy sleeves, embroidery, loose ties…prefer something very simple and these are perfect. I see similar styles in other brands so there will be other options if these don’t work. The dark red is my first choice, but the “mint” could be a lovely surprise.

I’m thinking of two styling ideas (showing some inspirational finds)
1. With coated slim jeans (or maybe jeans with a subtle print) and booties. For the dark red one I’d go with black jeans and black, bronze, or grey animal print booties; but for the mint one I’d go with lighter colors. In either case perhaps a scarf (like the one in the find photo) and/or simple gold jewelry.
2. Worn over my long black velvet sleeveless dress, belted, kind of a western vibe. Not sure how this would look but I bought the dress at a thrift shop and haven’t’ found ways to wear it yet so worth a try. It's ankle length but I could easily shorten it to a midi length.

How would you style a simple velvet shirt like this? (I don't tuck shirts in, and am not that interested in wearing a skirt other than the "over the dress" idea).

Thanks in advance for all ideas!
