I think I was about 8 or 9? had just started getting 'grown-up hair' in a couple of years before that, and found it horrifying! So I get Dad's shaver and shave from top to toe --- giving myself a new hairline in the process, entirely removing the hair in front of my years, an inch off my forehead, half my eyebrows (the outer edges), and another inch or two off the nape. </p> <p>Ma was less than pleased when she went to comb out and tie back my plaits that evening --- I managed to avoid looking her in the face, so she didn't notice until huge clumps came off in her hands while she tried to disentangle my mad curls. Mine was blonde and straight, but it was cut in a kind of pageboy style, with blunt cut bangs. I decided that the only way to get long straight hair was to cut the bangs off at the very top of my hairline at 6-something in the morning, using scissors I found in the kitchen drawer. Somehow, I didn't realize that you had to grow the bangs out - I figured people just had to cut them off. </p> <p>Mom wasn't amused.
