The hairdresser has done a brilliant job - she looks gorgeous, no-one would ever know! My son cut his own hair when he was 6. At school. When his teacher spoke to me about it at the end of the day, at first I thought she was going to tell me he'd cut off one of his female classmates' ponytails - I was actually relieved when I realised he'd just taken a bit of a chunk out of his own hair!

Jules, your comment is so funny as is Inge's about the extra cuddle for Domino. Those were some very busy scissors! Tim did a wonderful job and the "after" photo of Emmy is gorgeous. I like her new haircut!

I have to say I am mightily relieved this is not just MY children and even more relieved Tim has fixed Emmy's hair. Unfortunately Emmy was not the only victim of Teah's scissor happiness, Domino the cat is also missing a chunk of fur.

Honestly, I am still giggling from the thought of all these forum members without their eyebrows and bangs. We are some Motley Crew.

Jules, you've just earned another wonderful family memory to be shared during storytelling time in the coming years. While I don't have any personal experience and I don't have children, this does seem to be a very common occurrence among young siblings and I'm just glad no one was harmed in the haircutting process and you, the wise mother, had safety scissors on hand. How is Emmy's sense of humor with all of this? I think she looks really cute!

She's adorable! I have 5 boys and each one of them has cut their hair at some point. It's frustrating but like others said, it seems to be a right of passage. Sigh.

What was funnier was when my 2nd oldest shaved off his eyebrows... twice... because he wanted to look like Wormtongue from The Lord of the Rings movie...

Oh Julie, I hope your sense of humour has returned by now since I am late to this thread.

And now, how is this for a faux pas. I commented recently to a toddler's mother that it looked like her sisters or the child had been having a go with the scissors on her hair. BUT SHE HADNT!!! the child had just never had her hair cut so it it was at all different lengths (and I hadn't seen it out for a while as she had had it up)

Jules, I hope you're finding some of your humor back from reading these great examples!

Maybe it is different with boys or that I was a clueless mom when they were toddlers. It wasn't until my younger DS was getting a haircut, that the stylist pointed out to me that his older brother had most likely chopped off some of his cowlick at the back of his head. The boys were probably 5 and 3 at the time and DD was just a few months old. That reminds me, I need to ask those boys (13 and 11 years) if they remember the details of that event. : )

Oh my word. This is the funniest thing I've seen all day. Honestly, she's such a cutie pie that it doesn't matter, and before you know it, the hair will have grown back in anyway, and this makes such a funny story.

And omg Shannon, the eyebrow story actually made me laugh out loud! BEST EYEBROW REMOVAL STORY EVER. Even funnier than the one where my husband was a teenager and some of his friends shaved off another friend's eyebrow while he was passed out (is this a rite of passage for boys?), and my future mother-in-law threatened them all with death if any of them tried that trick on her own kids. (My husband made it to adulthood with both eyebrows intact).

Aw, but Jules, she's such an adorable little beauty it hardly matters --- perhaps it's time for a mother-daughter shopping trip to get her a broad, stretchy hairband? And a little something to shore up mummy too!

Like Mo, I did the hair-raising thing to myself, having no siblings to help. Only, I attacked everything, all over me... I think I was about 8 or 9? had just started getting 'grown-up hair' in a couple of years before that, and found it horrifying! So I get Dad's shaver and shave from top to toe --- giving myself a new hairline in the process, entirely removing the hair in front of my years, an inch off my forehead, half my eyebrows (the outer edges), and another inch or two off the nape.

Ma was less than pleased when she went to comb out and tie back my plaits that evening --- I managed to avoid looking her in the face, so she didn't notice until huge clumps came off in her hands while she tried to disentangle my mad curls. She had little room to scold though --- she had 'absentmindedly' taken her craft scissors to her own eyebrows at age 9 or 10 while learning her multiplication tables! --- and anyway going to school for the next few days was torture enough.

Ha! I will indeed prescribe some medicinal Chardonnay - stat! I also was a victim of the childhood hair horror story. But I did it to myself - much like Velvetychocolate. I'd wrapped my bangs around a metal comb and couldn't unwind it, so I just cut the bangs at the hairline. oops. Not a pretty sight growing out . . .

You'll find your sense of humor, don't worry. Your daughter looks adorable. I'm wiping away tears of laughter reading these stories. Almost 50 years ago I did the same thing to my cousin and playmate. He was about 2-1/2 years old with a headful of red curls that had never seen scissors, because my aunt couldn't bear to cut those curls. I was 5 and should have known better. Yep, I swiped my mother's manicure scissors and gave Billy a haircut. We were both cool with it. My aunt and mother, mmmm, not so much. Now Billy's son, who is 4, has his father's same beautiful red curls.

Oh Jules! I'm sure you'll find your sense of humour on the top shelf of the kitchen cabinet tomorrow morning;-)

It's such a classic story, isn't it, sisters or brothers cutting each others hair*, but I've no doubt every parent reacts horrified at first. (I was going to link to the same interview Nancy is linking too - I'm sure Teah too has a perfectly reasonable explanation for this little adventure in hair styling.)

Hang in there, and have a nice little sweet treat to help you recover from the shock.
Hugs!

Inge

* My brother actually did this to himself when he was seven. He "very artfully" cut his fringe a few days before he needed his picture taking for his First Communion. Mama was *not* impressed.

When I was little, I really wanted hair like my Mom's - long, blonde, straight, parted in the middle. Mine was blonde and straight, but it was cut in a kind of pageboy style, with blunt cut bangs. I decided that the only way to get long straight hair was to cut the bangs off at the very top of my hairline at 6-something in the morning, using scissors I found in the kitchen drawer. Somehow, I didn't realize that you had to grow the bangs out - I figured people just had to cut them off.

Mom wasn't amused. I might as well have cut my bangs with pinking shears, they were that jagged.

The good news is that hair grows fast, and I'm sure little Emmy's hair will be back to normal within 6 to 8 weeks.

Oh, she still looks so pretty! If you cut it to shoulder length it'll look good! I remember when I was about 9-10, my older sister cut my hair short...and shorter, and shorter trying to 'even it out' I wore a 'Gilligan' style hat 24 hours a day for over a month till my hair grew out enough to cover some of my ears! lol

I love this kind of thing! When my twin and I were little (4 or 5) she cut my bangs and they had a big old chunk out of them......Fast forward to age 11 and I am still trusting her with my hair.....so she cuts it (shoulder length) off to way above the ears. I looked like a little french warlord from the 1500's. My mother screamed and almost fainted. I was pretty cool about it but my mom gave my twinnie *#%* hell about it! The memory is still most amusing to me.

My sister used to cut my hair in my sleep. I think I still turned out okay Your daughter is so sweet her beauty shines even through a mullet. It will be okay.

My sister, who is 9 years older than I am, decided when I was about 5, to assist me with my grooming habits. She decided my eyebrows were far too bushy for my age so with my naive "ok", decided to wax and shape them for me. Little did I know she had never used hot wax or groomed eyebrows before and I was her "test subject". She promptly ripped off my entire left eyebrow, leaving me crying in pain and devastation and her trying to hide the evidence of wax and little muslin strip with my eyebrow attached to it before my mother came back from the store. I recovered and this story comes out every time we all get together. Some day, you too will laugh. Just not right away!

That went pretty viral, by the way.

And I think that this interview will be played at each of their weddings, for sure.

And they will deserve it.

RoseandJoan, I may not be able to find YOUR sense of humor, but I can lend you this one. You will appreciate it and find it hysterical, I hope!
