approprio, I love the look! All of them actually!

grandfashionista, I'm one of those with a width issue because of bunions--and very narrow feet other than the bunion part (which is worse on the right foot, to make fit even more complicated). They need to come up with bunion-width shoes!

Lots of nays, as I expected.

I definitely like the look of coloured tights with peep-toe or strappy booties, as seen in K.M.'s examples, because the contrast emphasizes the beauty of the shoe and the colour itself adds a fun factor.

Wolford, by the way, sells beige footless pantyhose, for those interested.

I agree that if the weather is warm enough for sandals, then it's warm enough for bare legs, but I would want to incorporate a dressy sandal as an all-year item.

Regarding the toe box: square toe boxes can be deceptive. The sharp angles can be rather unforgiving, and cut into the wrong part of my foot.

If you have a wide toe box (from bunions, for example) and an otherwise narrow foot, wider shoes are often not the answer, as the width assumes a wider foot in all measurements. No amount of heel protectors, inserts and footpads, I find, can fully stabilize the foot or protect it from bleeding blisters.

OK, here're some looks I like. Grandfashionista, not sure if that's what you had in mind with your question.
It's interesting that most of the looks that match tights with open-toes or sandals are for high heels (often with a bit of platform). Maybe that amps the dressy factor?
Which is why I love the look on pic 4. Not technically a sandal (and not an open toe), but a t-trap flat doesn't have a whole lot of coverage and in this sense I find it comparable, as there's a lot of skin surface (tight surface) to be exposed. I absolutely love this look and have been trying to replicate it since I saw the catalogue, but haven't found the right combo of shoe-tight-skirt for it yet.

I am totally in favour of wooly tights with chunky open toed lace ups. I do it all the time, so sue me. But with sheer pantyhose? Eh... well, I'm all for a bit of frump chic, but let's just say that's a hard look to pull off.

unfrumped, thanks for the clarification!
By the way, I didn't know anything about Fluevog shoes except that I always drive in front of one of their stores on my way to work. Now that you mentioned it I looked it up and thought maybe I should pay that store a visit! I love this kind of arty shoe...

K.M., an open toe sandal by design can't be very pointy or else your forefoot and toes would spread out over the sole of the shoe. Soe overall the " footprint " tends to be more foot- friendly.
Close toe shoes do style and trend- shifting changes in shape and require your got to conform to the shoe shape. Only the most rounded or squared off shoes would get an orthopedic seal of approval, I think!
To get that shape and be " in style" may require some kind of arty shoe like a Fluevog or a round-toed glat or pump that often runs rather sedate, or dare i say, frumpy, to which the style critics might
say, " if you could just update to more modern footwear"!

I am not sure I understand what you mean by the fit in the toe box.

On the look: I must say that I really like some versions of opaque tights with sandals or open-toe shoes, as long as the sandals/shoes are heavy enough (with lots of coverage despite the open toes, a chunkier sole/heel--i.e. not strappy numbers). I have never been able to put this together myself, but I've seen it in magazines (and thinking of Anna Wintour, I've seen it in Vogue) and I do love it. Black tights with dark brown shoes or even lighter-colored shoes... or an all-cream look... Later if I have time I'll try to find pics to share.

Great question, because I've often thought about this and wondered what others thought.

I know exactly what you mean about shoe fit. I have a narrow heel but forefoot had gotten wider and has issues. These issues are exacerbated by heel height as might be in a dressy shoe.
I wear nude pantyhose but have still become gunshy of wearing them with a full open toe. That's clearly influenced by " fashion" , since if it were commonly done, I'd be there!
Peep toes with small "peep" I've done, but then peeptoes can be more uncomfortable than closed toe.

So, ultimately, a HEWI for me is a dressy, closed toe semi- sandal shoe with a comfortable toe box and but some strapping or lighter summer look.
Sometimes the toe box could be made of open- weave style leather so the pantyhose-clad toe isn't obvious

If it's warm enough to wear sandals, then it's also warm enough for a bare leg. And then obviously the reverse is true too. I do not like looking at hose covered toes sticking out of an open -toe shoe ....unless it's done deliberately with heavy tights in a contrasting colour.

I like a nude, skin matching nylon, even with sandals. Of course sandal foot toe with the seam tucked to not show! But I think this give a finishing touch, and my legs have issues! And then the additional benefit of preventing chafing also add weight to wearing nylons.
But I think it looks best matching your skin tone . Different color skin peeking out of sandals is weird IMHO. (Thinking suntan nylons

Wearing pantyhose with dress sandals--yay or nay? I don't like exposing my toes in general, but sandals and peep-toes are often better suited to feet that wider in the toe box.

Following the links from the Anna Wintour thread, I found a photo of her wearing black pantyhose with gray/silver dress mules.
