Bonnie - I hope the metro slouch pants work out for you. Shh - don't tell, but I have them in shorts and capris too. I can wear them for working out as long as it's not super hot. I took my capris on my last vacation where we spent a lot of car time. I find them very comfy.

I'd really love to see you in straight, wide leg, drapey trousers, like the Chelsea's. See how those work. Not mind you, palazzo pants which widen as they go down...but flares or bootlegs, those would also be interesting. Skinny/straights go without saying...hehe.

It is a crazy lot of pants, isn't it?

Well, in my defence, I don't actually use them all at one time -- some are for one season and some for another. And I basically have one pair of each type of the regular pants. Of jeans, there is really no counting...

Wow, Suz, that's a lot of pants! I'd like to play in your closet.

Hmm, I wear mostly dresses and skirts. The pants I have are one pair of slim fitting ankle-length dark wash jeans, one pair of bootcut blue jeans on their last leg, and one pair of dressy black wide-leg trousers. (i'm not counting PJs/loungewear here - that would add four more pairs but none of them suitable for running errands or better.)

I've been defaulting to skirts and dresses not just because I like them, but also out of convenience. We have a shoes-off household so when I wear pants hemmed to be worn with heels, the pants come off when the heels do. Which means changing, but that's not usually what I want. So lately I've been thinking about making all my (future) pants slim and hemming them to ankle length, such that they would look good with both heels and flat shoes. We'll see how that goes.

I've got all kinds of pants, more than I need, probably, but then again, I wear them for 8 months a year almost exclusively.

Most of my pants are jeans. I don't even want to tell you how many pairs I own.

Here are the categories of those:

White denim
Blue Denim
Other neutral denim (e.g. burgundy, grey, taupe. I actually only have taupe at the moment but intend to retire in favour of burgundy and grey if I can find).
Patterned denim (in my case, plaid, of which I have a dark pair and a light pair.)

Then there are the cuts:

Bootcut (more like a flare on me)
Skinny/ slim/cigarette
Ultra skinny (for tucking into boots)
Cropped slim or skinny
Cropped kick flare
Boyfriend
Slouchy skinny/ slim boyfriend
Straights

And within these categories, variations on same, i.e. the cropped white slim jean, the cropped raw edge straight jean, etc.

It's nuts. To the point where I laughed out loud at what Clementine said. It is exasperating!

For non-jean, dressier pants, I have:

Slouchy pleat front pants.
Wide leg trousers
Silky track pants
Loose roll up linen pants
Slim cigarette pants
Moto pants (skinny with knee detail)
Slim side zip pants
Cropped slim pants
Culottes
High waisted crop pants
Trackpants

I mean, honestly. Where does it end? I am sure I am forgetting something.

Leggings I do not count as pants. Bottoms, they may be, but they aren't pants.

My pants wardrobe consists of

Jeans x 5 (3 skinny, one straight/slim, one boyfriend)

athleisure Lululemon jet crops x 1

Cropped pants (black, white, patterned) x3

Casual harems x 2

(I also have ponte leggings, shorts, gear which I have not included)

I will be retiring one pair of harems and one pair of crops as they are worn out.

On my wish list
- some flared/bootleg denim (not very available here now)
- smart work ankle pants
- cropped casual harems for summer

I tend to be fussy about what shoes I wear with the pants, and often choose the pants based on the footwear.

- I don't like boots with my harems
- I like chunky footwear with my skinny jeans

I love lightweight harems in summer for casual wear and I like skinny jeans in winter for MOTG activities....Both for practical reasons. I think a straight jean with a small heel is my most flattering look however.

I think I have some of each of these types in my closet, and frankly, I find it exasperating. I like them with different shoes, different tops, etc. Each new style seems to just require more and more and more.

Going forward, I will limit myself to:
--slim ankle pants
--skinny ankle or full length jeans
--leggings
--slim straight knit pants (ponte, etc)
--athleisure

Bonnie. I don't have any issue with the seams at athleta, fortunately. I am fairly tall, but longer through the torso and wearing flat shoes these days. Kind of on the cusp of wearing regular and tall pants. In these, I wear a regular length, not tall. Good part of athleta is the free returns if they don't work.

I wear a lot of dresses in spring/summer as our temps are very hot. But I do wear some pants and primarily pants and jeans in fall/winter. I do wear a very limited variety of silhouettes (and I am fine with that)- jean style with slim or skinny legs, slim cigarette pants, a few ankle length styles, leggings, and flares in black and denim. I've tried other styles and have gone back to these. I no longer have boyfriend jeans or straight or wide legs styles. I just don't feel fab in any pants where I have excess fabric in the thighs.

And because they just aren't my style, I don't wear chinos, cargo pants or athleisure pants (except for lounge/gear). From your picks, I have the CE bootcut which fit very well. I also have similar trousers from BR; the Sloane is often a good fit for me.

I am only 5'1" but I enjoy wearing flares as long as they aren't too wide and as long as they are fitted through the thigh. With the hems just off the ground and heels, preferably with a pointed toe, they are the closest I get to looking like I have long legs!

I've also stuck to a limited variety of pants; skinny jeans and chinos, and new to me this year; crop flares and harem. I appreciate the work you did on posting this group of pant options. I'm going to try the Athleta Gap Quest Metro Slouch Pant which looks good on the model. delurked and La Pedestrienne commented that the seams are irritating but the reviewers on the site love these pants. Have you tried them?

re: Athleta pants, I *love* the way some of them look (the Metro series in particular), but I just cannot abide their seams. I find them very rough and scratchy, and apparently the most "flattering" places to put seams are also the most irritating to my sensitive skin. Luckily, they have a very generous return policy. I've probably tried half a dozen different pants and tights from them, and returned every single one. YMMV, of course.

After looking at Athleta pants for a long time, last year I ordered and tried several. I liked the metro slouch and the Bettona boyfriend. I think, given your comment about wide legs, you may prefer the metro slouch, as I found it to have a pretty straight leg on me. For some reason, they always show both of those pants cinched at the hem. I have never worn them that way, and I don't really understand who that looks better on (must be someone though). The fabric is nice and fairly weighty. I think it can pass as a casual pant, although ymmv.

Hi everyone, sorry I have not been around YLF much lately. I've gotten very busy, was not feeling so well a few weeks ago (nothing serious and over now), and to be honest I was feeling a bit of YLF overload/obsession and had to back off a little. Maybe some of you have also experienced that? :-) I still owe one more posting on ankle boots I ordered from NAS.

NAS got me thinking about fall/winter wear, which got me thinking about pants. I wear them most of the time year round (except high summer) and tend to wear either jeans or slacks and not much else. I want to consider some other choices this fall. I think of pants in terms of style/shape, fabrication, color/pattern, and length. I know there are lots of colors and lengths to choose from, but I'm going to focus on ankle length or longer as a starting point. I'm also not thinking too much about color/pattern just yet. I pulled together what I hope is a comprehensive list in the finds below. (There is a fair amount of overlap between some styles and that's ok).

As you take a quick look at these, do you think of additional styles not shown here that you like to wear? If you can provide finds, even just rough ideas, that would be great. Also any other comments you want to add about what pants you wear in various settings would be great. THANKS!

1 - 4 trousers in various leg widths
5 - 6 Slim or "skinny" pants in woven fabrics and knits including leggings.
7 - 10 Jeans: straight leg, skinny (boyfriend too although not pictured)
11 - Chinos/Khakis
12 - 16 Athleisure Styles; this category seems very broad and I bet I haven't covered all the possibilities
17 - Cargo Pants; sometimes with a cuffed bottom
18 - Harem Pants; can't leave these off this list given how often they are discussed on YLF although they are not my cuppa

I have purposely excluded wide leg and wide flare pants of all lengths. Those are definitely valid styles to add to a complete list, but I don't think they are flattering on someone as short as me. I have also excluded true workout gear because to me that's a totally separate category.
