I think of cigarette pants as less tapered, and also with less detail than skinnies can have - streamlined, perhaps? Also the fabric matters to me (no jersey, for instance) - I think of more structured.

Ah ok, so skinnies = sausage casings, cigarette pants = slightly less sausagey. Or something like that?

Skinnies are very tight on the calves and ankle. Cigarette pants are not jeans and can be full length. Also tight, but not necessarily skinny. Cigarettes can be straight leg.

Slim-fit is a generic term that refers to skinnies, straight legs and cigarette pants at any length.

Cepantics!! *applause* I love it!
Confession: I was kind of using the terms interchangeably, so I'd love to know the difference too. I'm further confused by the fact that my current favourite black slim-legged pants, which are actually so long that I can roll them a bit, got referred to as cigarette pants both by me and by Angie when I posted them, and I'm pretty sure only one of us is right (hint, not me). There's no side zip in sight, and they're certainly not cropped, so I'm not sure what to make of it. :)
Either way, I think we can all agree that it's a fab silhouette in general irrespecctive of the minute...cepantics? :)
Your reply

I like Suz's categories--they are kind of what I think of, even though I coudn't have explained it in such detail. We could rename cigarette pants: pencil pants. But maybe the point is they are ankle length, so not as long a look as a pencil.

Oh, and Viva, here's a new word for you: sepantics.

Hahah, Lisa!!

I guess the idea is that it makes a woman's legs look like cigarettes. Oh, how sexy!

Or, maybe they are part of "le smoking." Hmmm.

I think Suz nailed it. I see cigarette leg pants as the Audrey Hepburn look - shorter, side-zip (but that wouldn't be the defining feature anymore) and tapered, or not? Although if they were tapered, the descriptor "cigarette" no longer makes sense, does it? I'm thinking aloud here.....

I'm off to have a smoke.

You know what, I pretty much lump all of those words together -- they're almost meaningless for someone who has, um, substantial legs like mine. Someone else's BF cut is my straight leg. I am sure there is some sort of distinction, but I bet the difference in cut varies widely depending on the brand. I have "skinny" cuts that actually have room in the calf, which to my mind would make them more "slim" or "straight." I try to ignore the label and look at the cut.

I am not sure that manufacturers all use the term correctly, so that muddies things even more than they're already muddied.

In my own mind (and I could be completely wrong) --

A skinny is a pant (usually a jean) that is very slim all the way down the leg, and may have scrunch (i.e. extra length) on the bottom. Increasingly, these pants are literally skin-tight -- but that is not a necessary part of the definition. The skin tight ones tend to run a little bit shorter, for a look that gives little to no scrunch. Depending on your point of view, your body type, your fashion preferences, and how to intend to wear it, this look is either "sleek" or "calf-sucking."

Cigarette pants emerged much earlier. Earlier versions were all side zip, I believe -- though that is not true any more. In my imagination, a cigarette pant is also very slim but perhaps not skin tight, and it tapers gradually to the bottom so the ankle area is quite slim. Often these are ankle pants.

Slim pants? Who knows? Those could be anything from straight legs to skinnies to cigarette.
