Having just moved, I'm a fan of keeping the wardrobe light and flexible until you settle in a new place. It would be good to have at least one pair of well fitting pants, and a skirt of two.

Good luck on your move!

I'm unclear on the difference between option 1 and 2. It seems like you want some new pants.

If you're in weight-loss mode, I wouldn't buy things that are too expensive. You still want something nice, though. (I can understand not wanting throw-away clothing.)
I think AMerican Eagle jeans fit the bill.

They have a nice wash, only 2% elastane, I believe, and are inexpensive. (But not cheaply made!) The only thing about them is that the waistband tends to stretch, from my experience. So you'd need a belt.

Lol, rachylou, tempting but I think I personally feel more fab in my oversized slouchy pants.

I'll call it a grunge-lite capsule...

The new skirt should hold me, and if I find a great pair of jeans I won't say no, but I'll also hold off on hunting.

Hah--that's funny Firecracker I actually do have a ruched black midi skirt OTW that's very similar to that one! I'm excited, b/c I think it will help a lot in terms of versatility.

My short dress capsule is in need of a serious upgrade, too. I have a two right now but I'm trying to keep them out of casual rotation in order to have a couple of "nice" options. My 3 - 4 casual dresses have all ended up in the trash recently due to non-fixable stains or holes. I've been crazy hard on my clothes lately... I'm a few months shy of 30 and this is the first time in my adult life I've had so many things fall apart at once. I tend to shop for classics rather than trends, so I'm basically just wearing things I love into the ground right now, and I've been holding off an shopping since I knew we'd be moving! (FWIW, I'm running into the same problem w/ my husbands wardrobe, and he's even harder to shop for than I am!)

This is actually a very hard question. I personally would not buy anything until after the move. I would not feel fabulous during this time, but I would bare it for ~ one month. This is probably not what other people would do. I admit to a certain austerity during certain times in my life. This would be one of those times.

I would get only one pair of skinny pants now (but only if it's really good) and take out a couple other pairs that are passable until you move. Probably wise to take the new climate into account, and it's always nice to move less stuff.

I was in a similar place earlier this year and it just felt sooooo unfab to wear those too-big pants! If nothing fits right now that's a different story, but if not it's absolutely worth adding the new size slowly, in pairs that you really love. I did set aside my absolute favorite too-large pairs, and purged all the rest.

I would get a couple of new pieces that you can wear now. Maybe a skirt, since it sounds like you enjoyed wearing them, and a pair of pants. Something like the popular Vince Camuto tube skirt can go so many places, and being stretchy and elastic, it can fit through some body changes.
Also, what about leggings and short dresses or tunics?

It seems every time I turn around another pair of pants is too big for me. With slouchy boyfriend styles, it's okay, I can fudge a size too large for a while. However, other than boyfriend/straight leg styles, I'm pretty much out of luck with what's in my closet. I have ZERO skinnies/tapers right now, after a mostly size-based purge, so a lot of my tops have become orphans. To make matters even worse, pretty much all of my casual skirts ended up in the rag pile after heavy wear this summer.

We are making a long-distance move in ~1 month, so I'm really hesitant to add a bunch of new pants right now, especially since I'm not quite ready to get rid of all the too-big ones just yet (you never know). Plus my life right now is quite casual, no dress code/WAHM, so it's hard for me to figure out if new pants are a need or a want.

I feel like my options are:

1. Create a small "pre-moving-day" capsule around 2-3 pairs of pants that look okay and wait to replenish my wardrobe until I move (I'll also be in a different climate, but it will be one I'm more used to than where I am now), and put everything else in boxes. The benefit will be having less stuff to move, and saving a little money.

2. Buy a couple of new pants that fit well and will allow me to wear a wider variety of tops and shoes right now. The benefit will be greater flexibility, less frequent laundering (I have a toddler, so I can't get too minimalist or before I know it everything is covered in spaghetti sauce!), and potential crisis-aversion.

TIA!
