Yes !!! It makes me feel comfortable when others ask too. I actually JUST had my pant length commitment ceremony : ) After following YLF for several weeks, I took 6 pairs of pants to my seamstress and said - these are for heels and these are for flats.

Before that it was "versatility" - it has to go with everything - flats, heels, boots, wheelchairs, you get the picture. The great thing is that most people are not as "attuned" as are the YLF people and the YLF gang doesn't seem to have a judgmental bone in their bodies .......

Believe me when I say that I have more things in the past that I am mortified over than past PPL indiscretions !!! : ) Like the time I walked around for 20 minutes with my skirt tucked into my pantyhose . Yup, true ! I walked through a hospital that way and people kept looking at me - I thought to myself ( I must look nice today - everyone is looking ) , oh how vain !!! HELLO !!!

thanks so much Angie, Maya, and Jenny for your feedback and photos of PPL. Jenny, I especially like your suggestion of going through all your pants - it looks like I'm going to have to look for two things - pants length and pleats!! Always one to look on the bright side - at least I'll make some room in my closet!

And Jenny, thanks for the comforting words to let me know you've been where I am right now - it is very disconcerting at times. But I'm a "learner" so all is good! Thanks again ladies!

That's a superb length, Jenny! Not an inch off the ground though. That's practically skimming!

Hope I didn't give you an apoplexy Angie! I said an inch off the ground but I may be wrong about the measurement.... It's awfully hard to measure how far off the ground my pants are when they're on my body - LOL

I'm very comfortable with this length:
http://goingungracefully.files.....12-011.jpg

however far off the ground that is - They don't drag the ground but are PDL: Pretty Darn Long.

Brenda, please ALWAYS feel that you can ask anything here on YLF. There is no such thing as a daft question :0)

Almost skimming the surface of the ground is about an eight of an inch off the ground - which is an ideal length. The picture that Maya has linked to is perfect for bootcuts and wide legs. Skinny legs however, are different. Hems that taper cannot skim the surface of the ground - so we allow them to scrunch a little at the ankle instead.

So far, I have not seen pants from the 80's or 90's work in a business wardrobe. I run into this problem a lot when I clear out closets for clients. Pants from that era look dated. However, vintage items from the 60's, 70's and early 80's that are matched with uber current pieces from the 00's in highly theatrical outfits are an entirely different kettle of fish. Does that make sense?

oh gosh - Brenda, after I started following ylf, I had a total melt-down panic attack when I realized that I'd been prancing around in too-short pants for YEARS and YEARS.

I had been perfectly confident in them. It was terribly disconcerting to start looking at my pants and feeling like every single one of them was wrong, wrong, wrong. I started feeling very self-conscious. It was most upsetting!

So here's what I did: I put on all of my pants and checked out which ones could still work with flats (I mostly wear heels, so this was quite the revelation!). The ones that were too short even with flats went into the donation bin.

Then I went out and bought a couple of pairs of pants that work with heels. One pair I thrifted (I am crazy for thrifting too) and the other I totally splurged on - premium denim from Nordstrom's (on sale though!). I also got a pair of $12.99 skinny jeans from TJ Maxx that I can wear with flats OR heels. I feel much better. :-)

I can NOT have my pants literally skimming the ground. Can't have it. They will be ruined in no time and won't throw my money away like that. I HAVE come to the conclusion that I like the way pants look when they are an inch or so off the ground. Take some pics of yourself with PPL (proper pants length) and compare them to pics with a-little-too-short pants and just see what you think.

Sometimes this journey is disconcerting Brenda - I totally feel you on this! I have my own sense of style and my style won't jive with others' styles 100% of the time. I'm totally ok with that. But I feel like I've learned so much here and I really value the opinions of the good folks here. Please know that opinions here are truly offered with love and good intentions and you don't have to agree with them all of the time.

Maybe they'll work with flats??? I don't like my pants to skim the ground because the hems get dirty - about an 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch off the ground seems to work best for me.

Don't be scared to ask! We have all gone through the process of re-evaluating our closets and we are all here to help & support each other through it!
