Thanks for the input, all. I have decided to return these. Black pants are not that rare an animal that I should have to rely on alterations. And there's always the possibility that the alteration won't be done well, which is money down the drain.

Definitely sounds like a long rise issue. I agree with quietgirl, it could be tricky. Pockets could cause problems and yes you do need to remove the band at the front and curve the front down to shorten.

As a seamstress, I would say it could be. It sounds like they would have to remove the waistband to shorten the crotch length. Are there pockets, belt loops?

It does sound like a rise issue and makes sense if you usually wear petites. That is one place where they are typically different in measurement.

When I sit, the folding doesn't bother me. However, I have been having this feeling when I am standing that there is something a little "grandpa-y" about the pants. I couldn't put my finger on it, but when I sat down and saw the wrinkling, I thought maybe the excess fabric was what's doing it. I think that I am seeing the excess fabric hang down at the crotch when I stand up, and that gives the pants a slight grandpa vibe.

It does sound like the rise is too long if it's coming up when you sit and drops low when you stand. I would think a good seamstress would be able to fix them.

It does sound like the rise is too long. Does the folding bother you? If it doesn't I don't think it matters.

I just bought a new pair of pants and am wondering if the rise is too long on me (I normally wear petite sizes, and this is a misses'). When I sit down, the fabric on the front, right above the crotch, kind of folds up on itself, like there is excess fabric (maybe an inch or so). The fabric of the pants is quite silky, so it's not a huge lump or anything, but I'm wondering if this is a sign that the pants don't fit quite right. The pants feel OK, although when I'm standing I do think that the crotch is dropped just a bit. That is probably the excess fabric that migrates up when I sit.

I suspect I am answering my own question in the positive: the rise is too long. What do you think?

I wish I could post a pic, but I am camera-less. And I don't know if this would show up anyway (the pants are black). TIA.
