I noticed they have leg opening measurements too in descriptions La Ped- that should be helpful! Sometimes skinnies are so skinny they're even hard to get over feet :/

The front-to-back vs side-to-side thing makes sense to me. I have a prominent derriere, so to speak, but from the front my hips aren't very wide (narrower than my shoulders even, so I guess I'm a V according to Imogen). This means a lot of curvy fit pants are unflattering on me because they have extra fabric that poofs out at the hips. I also find a lot of so-called "curvy" cuts are just larger overall and I end up being sized out (usually a 0/25). High rises have generally been my best bet, although sometimes I can get away with a slouchy "hip-slung" fit, though it's been a while since we've seen that look at retail.

My biggest pants fit issue is having larger-than-average calves. There are so many pants out there that I can't pull past my calves, even when the waist is huge. This was never an issue back in the good old bootcut days, but ever since skinny jeans took over, I've had a hard time.

Thanks all! Giving up and wearing skirts or leggings is what I mostly do- just so much easier. Not sure how to check the back view besides maybe in 3 way mirrors. Maybe it's something you feel too?
It seems like everyone thinks a different body type has it easier with pants! Maybe they're just ananomically better on men?

"Take photos from the rear. If they have drag lines in the back (like the photos featured here, or maybe in some other arrangement), then the pants don’t fit right. Or learn to make your own pants. Both options are frustrating and take a lot of work. You could also give up and wear skirts." (Italics mine).
Indeed. Should the quest for perfect fit be so demanding as to completely eliminate entire categories of clothing? I prefer Angie's suggestion to not worry so much about the back view, and I don't see most of those photos as problematic either.
As for elliptical vs round, I think she means wide vs. deep. Carrying your weight side to side vs back to front. Something that changes for many of us as we age. Pants got easier for me to fit as I got older and more "round". I still have "wide" hips but as my depth got bigger front to back standard pant cuts fit me much better. Not that skirts or dresses were ever an easy solution either, mind you.

Hmm, very informative. I would probably be more elliptical but don't find pants easy to fit, mostly due to having a thick waist, narrow hips and thighs. I can often buy to fit my waist and sew the hips and thighs narrower but that depends on pockets, topstitching, etc. That is interesting about the u-shape rise though. I'll have to check it out.

Suz, agreed. I think that elliptical body types to Imogen are what I might call inverted triangle and rectangle body types? Maybe even straight hourglasses - which is what I am.

I dress women for a living and have found that apple shapes are easy to fit into pants/jeans as long at the waists are wide enough.

I am still scratching my head about this...I am not sure it is possible for a woman to be elliptical. I know we are talking about relative measurements, of course, and I get that...but all except the very thinnest of women will have some rounded areas, surely, from the side as well as the front?

Thanks, Suntiger! A good starting point :)

I also echo Preppy Pear 100%. I'm a stickler for good fit, and don't find some of the visuals a fit problem - like the back views of "the dragging lines" on the jeans and pants. If they are subtle, it's fine! That's how some of our bodies fit bottoms and that's okay. The front views are a lot more important.

I find pants and jeans quite easy to fit, and am not elliptical in body type as the post suggests. I have a round bottom and relatively wider thighs compared to the rest of me. The only alteration I need to do from time to time is have the waistband taken in at the back on a high rise because of my sway back.

Great share Suntiger, thanks! It is very complicated ... I admit I am the worst for saying "good enough!" with pants and living with it ... perhaps this is why I default to skinnies with stretch so often! I definitely get slouchy pants-butt syndrome with other pants

It makes you understand why leggings have become pants for so many women. I also wonder if we are being too hard on ourselves about the rear view - what’s the line between good fit and tailor made?
