It sounds like a great idea to use the tanners to blend tan lines. Even tho I try to cover or use strong sunscreen or wear tanks/bathing suit--it *seems* that my childhood t-shirt/shorts tan (arms, throat and mid thigh) are conditionned to brown and the rest burns or stays white-- good solution for farmer tan.

Yes, the scent is the real downside to the Jergens product. I find the "express" version doesn't have such a strong scent, if that's any help.

I've used the Sally Hansen leg makeup too. I'm thinking I'll try the Jergens again this year, although I haven't done well with self-tanners in the past.

Do any of the other brands have a better fragrance? I'm really sensitive to fragrances.

I don't sunbathe, and always use sunblock.

I used self-tanner in college and high school when I highlighted my hair blonde. Then partway through college I became a redhead instead, and suddenly the pasty skin looked more normal. Now I just don't bother trying to modify my skin color (except for trying to protect myself from sunburn.) It's too much trouble and for me, it isn't worth the effort.

I have been using the Jergens too, but in the fair to medium and haven't noticed much color. Maybe I'll try the medium. I only use self-tanner on my legs. I have vein issues and it helps to cover it up. I feel self conscious of my glowing white legs.

I adore a spray tan, but for the $, effort and amount of time it lasts....I do not do it that often. My DH LOATHES spray tanning on me. He says I look like Magda (the old, shriveled lady from There's Something About Mary). LOL!!!!!

I use the Jergen's too! I pick the firming formula and, you guessed it, use it on my upper legs mostly. Mary, I also use the med to tan because light to med wasn't doing a thing.

That's what I use, too, Bella! Easy-peasy! I will note that I use the "medium" shade even though I have super white skin, because the "light" didn't provide enough color to suit me. Even the medium is nice and subtle and not "fake bake" looking at all.

ETA: I use it only on my legs. My arms seem to get enough sun to lose the minty fluorescence of my legs.

I started using this and I love it so far:
http://www.jergens.com/product.....rizer.aspx
No orange undertones, no streaks. It is just a regular daily moisturizer that builds up tan overtime, so it doesn't take any extra time either. 5 stars!

I'm fairly pale and I never used self-tanner. My skin is really susceptible and I try to avoid bringing anything in contact with it that's not necessary. I like myself pale, but it's easy for me to sport the pale look. In my environment artificial tan is not really associated with health and good looks, but more with a type of girl I don't want to be compared to. I think that's probably because all the people who do it the right way don't stand out, but all the negative examples for self-tanning attract attention.

I embrace and celebrate the pale! My mom, on the other hand, doesn't. She ends up looking a bit too orange for my liking. I'd rather be pale than look like an oompa loompa.

I have used it in the past and I like having just a hint of sun look. Otherwise I am very pale. But last summer I noticed that the dark comes off on my towels and clothing, so then I started worrying about sitting on someone's couch and when I get up, there is my tan left on the couch! How lovely! So maybe this year I will go naturelle.

I don't use self tanners. I do use leg makeup, though, two or three times a year in the spring when my legs are still pasty from the winter. I had a cocktail reception to attend last night and I went bare legged. I'm 56 years old and my legs show my age! What I use is a product from MAC called Silk Sheen Leg Spray, and it's a makeup that washes off at night.

I like that it gives my legs a slight sheen and sun-kissed look. I feel like it almost "air-brushes" my legs. The directions tell you to spray a small amount in your hands and massage on to your legs and arms, but I have found that I get a more even appearance by applying it with a soft application brush. I just rub the brush over my legs until it is blended in.

Has anyone else seen this "New Rules of Sun Safety" article? It says that it is unhealthy to get ANY amount of sun on your skin, and to take supplements for vitamin D.

http://shine.yahoo.com/channel.....y-2477938/

On the topic of self-tanner, I use a tanning moisturizer like Jergens Daily Glow, but only once or twice a week because after that the color begins to look unnatural. I also only use it on my legs, because it is difficult for me to apply evenly in other areas.

I think that pale skin can look beautiful, but mine doesn't because my translucent skin shows my veins and if my legs get cold at all, they get red splotches :(
Good luck!

I'm always searching for the best self-tanner, so far the best I had with the Nivea gradual tanning lotion, no streaks and very slow building 'tan', but hate the smell as well! I love tan skin though and can't wait till summer gets here, as I spend a lot of time outdoors and manage to get a nice tan no matter the amount of sunblock

I use self tanner but not all that consistently. I don't find it all that onerous -- I just slather it on after my shower, most days.

Pale and proud. I can't be bothered with the investment of time for self tanners and I'm not keen on the smell. I'm getting dark patches on my face through the sun and possible made worse by the pill so I am trying to religiously slather on SPF 30 everyday x

I am quite pale ( but not as pale as one of my daughters who will disappear if she stands in front of a white wall ) and I just don't care about the color of my skin anymore. Not enough to do anything about it anyway. I might color my hair or put blush on my face but the rest will stay the shade it is. In spring I always get a bit of color on my legs and arms from gardening in shorts and a T-shirt.

I use sunblock year round on my face. If you're living in the northern hemisphere, you probably aren't getting enough exposure to direct sunlight to get Vit D... I think.
