I recall that after I cut myself very deeply, the only neighbor home drove me to the ER. She had been in the shower, so she answered the door in a towel, then threw on clothes with no underwear. When a dad in the neighborhood heard the last bits, he chuckled and said that all the boys were going to hurt themselves. It was years before I understood that she was thin and quite good-looking, glamorous for my parents’ set. She had just married the widower across the street, so to my mind she was “Leslie (and Matt, Jon, and Jenny)’s mom” even though she was 29 &amp; Leslie &amp; I were 15. And even some much younger than that as old. What’s cool and what’s not has perhaps a very short turnaround time like a few years. I have this memory of being in a youth group when I was 16 and the ( in retrospect very attractive) male leader asked us what we thought middle aged was and we all said 40! He looked slightly wounded and said oh no, surely older than 40! Another of his comments on the comments was “see—she even admits it’s a jumpsuit! That’s the same as pajamas”.
