Who would have thought to paint fabric on chairs? Not me. The results are so impressive! A really great idea Cheryle. What a relief for you to have your father on the mend....i understand only too well how stressful it is when our parents become seriously unwell.

What an interesting project. The chairs turned out beautifully. You should really be proud of yourself!

Hope your father continues to improve. As I unfortunately know, taking care of sick parents is incredibly stressful.

Thanks everyone. I am now working on an upholstered bench and doing it in a soft grey-green.

I have come to a few conclusions on my two projects:

1. It is easier with tighter fitting fabric that doesn't have a lot of deep grooves. The first chair had deep set button tufts and they were much more difficult than the ones on this chair.
2. Textured fabric looks really nice painted as the texture shows through and adds interest.
3. Textile medium with latex paint is softer than paint with wax.
4. Wetting the fabric a lot makes the paint soak in and makes it more like stain so it doesn't harden the fabric.

I have a number of tutorials bookmarked so if anyone is interested send me a PM and I will link you up.

They turned out beautifully. I had no idea you could paint upholstery. I have some chairs that I was going to reupholster. Maybe I should paint them.

Here is to a speedy recovery for dad.

Now you have talent. Oh my goodness they are beautiful and what a great job you have done. I'm off to find your part 1 post.

quick story if you don't mind:

Me and my cousin WERE avid HGTV fans. We decided to do a home project of a sideboard buffet. We went to the thrift store and picked the sideboard we wanted very 50's. Gathered supplies from Home depot and ace hardware. We then proceded to strip, sanded, painted, and shellacked, and waxed in the living room with all the windows closed. Do I really need to say what happened next. It was a bad episode of Laverne and Shirley.

After that we never watched HGTV again. But my cousin still has that ugly sideboard. lol

Thank you for introducing me to the concept of painted upholstery - I'd never seen it done before. Your chairs have worked out really well.

I posted a few weeks ago that my father was in the hospital. After two and a half weeks, he was released on Monday evening. Yay. He is recovering well and even getting out and about. Sadly he has an ostomy bag which isn't great but with any luck, it will be temporary.

I did an experiment and painted an upholstered chair early on as stress relief. I learned from the experiment and did a second one this past week. I used regular latex paint mixed 1:1 with fabric medium and a bit of water for the first coat and left out the water for the second coat. The chairs were minty green before and are now silvery white. I darkened the wood on with minwax wipe on cloths and then replaced the trim with a newer cord that is a blend of silver and white. I think they are pretty. I had intended to use more modern streamlined pieces in my LR but when I saw these chairs I was reminded of how much I appreciate the curves of the art deco movement. I am rethinking the whole thing again.

Here are a few before, during and after pics.

Ignore the mess. I am using the LR with a drop cloth for better lighting and have another project in the works already. :)
