I have had similar debates with myself over jeans fit. I have usually gone with the larger size, and it is often a bad move. I do better when I find jeans that are snug but not uncomfortably so from the start, rather than too loose in some places for a smooth-looking fit. They only get baggier, not more streamlined looking. (Except when I gain weight, which has made me have to get new jeans at times.)

So I would say go with the smaller size, or perhaps look for this style in a different brand.

My first thought, is that sometimes, the fit of an item is off, or doesn’t match your expectations, no matter how much the same item works for other people. If that’s the case, it’s ok to let the item go, and keep searching. On the other hand, I can see that the fit of these jeans might represent a slight style evolution. It might be worth it to do an outfit creation session, and then decide which fit you like best, based on how the jeans look with the actual tops and toppers you’d wear with them.

Janet, I appreciate your advice.
I figured out one thing. I tried the EF BF and also that other high waisted jean pick - and both fit and were kinda fun , and maybe “ current” but...I just love this slim, long - legged look for jeans even though I don’t have long legs! I think it triggers something in my idea of what JEANS are , maybe my wannabe self. So that helped me decide to focus on this fit because I don’t have anything just like them now.
Firecracker, that is what I’m hoping. I almost didn’t order the next size, ‘cause is such trouble to keep sending things back, but just wondered, and hope it’s the “ I’ll know it when I see it” thing, when I’m considering sizes.

They look great! I love this style on you. Don't get them too big. You also don't want to feel squished by them, but if you get them too roomy, then they won't look as cool and flattering. You will probably be able to tell when you compare the two sizes.

I found these jeans to run TTS. I ordered the size 30. I have a pair of straight leg Paige jeans in the Transcend fabric in the same size and they seem to fit the same. I haven’t noticed any significant shrinkage after washing my straight leg jeans, but I always like to wash my jeans prior to having them hemmed. I am not planning to have the boot cuts hemmed.

I hear you! I find it overwhelming, and I wear jeans almost daily from October-May, so I do need a good denim capsule. But I find so few of them flattering or workable that I jump on the chance when I find a really good pair. I can usually tell right away. You sound like you have reservations about these so I would encourage you to pay attention to your feelings and keep looking if they seem like too much work. The length that seems so problematic for so many is actually a huge plus for me, but jeans that are too long rather than too short (and also have a good fit in the waist, hip and thigh) are a rarity in my world.

I’m on my phone, and there is so much foreground in your pics it’s hard to see any detail at all, but it looks like they work.

I found them TTS or slightly snug for Paige. I have almost always taken a 30 in Paige, and the 30s in this style works for me. I probably could have gone up to a 31, but the last time I did that (Th black Hoxton with the uneven unfinished hems), I ended up with jeans that slide down my backside after a bit of wear. I still wear them anyway but should probably get the waist taken in. I also have a MUCH shorter torso than you do, so sizing up often means there is too much fabric in the rise for me.

How do they feel to you? And will the hemming still enable the jeans to work with your desired footwear? There are so many jeans out there, I would not settle.

Suz, I tried them on in my regular denim size too. Dead right: they will run small or big depending on which brand you compare them to.

Madewell was odd sizing. Their jeans can run TTS or a size big generally, but at the NAS they ran small. EF usually runs a size big, so that was consistent.

In my experience, KUT and NYDJs can run TTS or a size big. Wit & Wisdom, Jag and the Gap tend to run a size big. Levis can run a size small - especially in that Wedgie! I tend to take the same size in Frame, CoH, Paige, Johnathan Simkhai, GRLFRND, Pilcro and Rag & Bone and find they run TTS is the silhouettes that I buy - which are not skinnies. They can run small in skinnies.

Angie, I felt they were TTS. Or at least, they are the same size I'm wearing in my slightly-less-stretchy Citizens jeans at the moment .(I still have a few Citizens in my former size that work but generally I am a size up from my previous denim size due to weight gain in the past 2 years.)

It sounds like some people find that they fit small.

It might depend on the brand you are comparing to?

I had to size UP in both Madewell jeans. I could do up my regular size but the denim isn't as stretchy so it was awfully uncomfortable.

I had to size DOWN in the Eileen Fishers.

Hard to see from the pics - you are far away! - but from what I CAN see, you look great in these very streamlined baby bootcuts. Great with flat footwear hemmed at the right length - like Suz is modeling here. And I know you like flat footwear :)

From what I can remember, these ran TTS. Did you think so too, Suz and unfrumped, or did you size up? I didn't mention sizing up in my description so I think my clients thought they ran TTS. I tried them on too. I loved them! But put my budget into the VB wool pants instead.

I have these jeans as well. I think they look good on you. I think they are meant to be close fitting since they have quite a bit of stretch to them, but it never hurts to try the next size up to put your mind at ease. To me they are a classic pair of jeans that you can either dress up or wear more casually.

Well, I bought them and I love them. So I am biased. They're a "baby boot cut" -- not a super wide flare but wide enough to go over most boots. :)

And I think they will look great on you with styling! Here's my version which you probably saw. Wearing with sneakers. I think I'll hem them at that length but want to decide between sneakers and low heeled booties.

Having a sort of almost-not NAS because of several things, one being in pre-retirement contemplation mode, which focuses the "Do I really need anything" lens a LOT and steers me away from my typical work-attire mode.

I tried a few pairs of jeans, though only showing the full-length Paige. Drawn to the dark wash and promise of bootcut but like others, I would have to hack off a good 4 inches or so and therefore would lose a good bit of the bootcut. I saw from reviews that these are pretty slim-fitting and that's how I find them. Am a bit ambivalent because I always figured I "need" more of a trouser-fit, bootcut darkwash jean as a "classic", and YET the thing that puts me more at risk for frumpiness with pants is too much roominess in the thigh unless it's intentionally a drapy woven trouser, as with pleated styles. I have off-loaded a number of pants, jeans, & chinos that were too sloppy/baggy in the rear and thigh for this reason.

SO my question is, with hemming, these become more of a "baby bootcut" but I do like a modest bootcut over any sort of true "flare". They are quite slim and wonder if that is not really flattering on me?
IRL they do give a longer legline than I think comes through in the photos, which always look a bit foreshortened to me.

I have them coming in the next size up (had to stalk for that) in case the fit is better with more ease. But will lose fit in the waist with that.

Showing with the Pikolinos boots in the burgundy color. For me these jeans would be cool weather, low boot or chunky sneaker jeans. Not at all sure where they fall on the spectrum of classic, trendy, or something else. I guess obviously not " of the moment" trend, which would actually be okay for me.

ETA: Tried on the next size up — no pics because I don’t think they show up that well with the dark jeans.
The bigger size feels more comfortable but does have a lot of extra room in the back waist so would need taking up there. They are still very fitted on the thigh, a bit less skinny on the calf. The smaller size still looks acceptable but is tight enough in crotch and thighs that I’m way more “ aware” of being in a snug and somewhat confining fit, if that makes sense. Since I want these to have some “ classic “ longevity and be something I would reach for, I think the better “ feel” is good, as well as being perhaps a bit less prone to looking “ tight”.
I know critiques are limited since y’all can neither see nor feel them, but how does this resonate with your fit experiences?
