Cosmo Edward bookends your hair! Ah, the spill factor. Of all people I should take that into account but don't think I do. Looks to me like you did a great job. That was one busy vacation!

Joy, I like your idea about keeping packing lists in a notebook. I plan on printing out this list and tucking it in the suitcase. I figure I can switch items for the weather as needed, but since most of our vacations are similar, this is a good starting off point. I always check the forecast before I leave so I know what kind of weather to expect.

Suz, the one thing I had way too much of was tops. I don't know how so many of them got in to my suitcase, but I could have spilled something every day and not run out of different tops. I think part of the problem I have is that I want to wear all my favorite summer clothes and there just aren't enough days to do that. I guess that's not such a bad problem!

Susie, I'm not a minimal packer either - I just take my entire closet and put it in my suitcase :)

You did very well. What if you had had a whole week of chilly weather or of hot weather? It makes a difference to if you can do laundry too. With a Tide stain remover pen I don't worry about spills.
I have been keeping packing lists for trips in a notebook for about 3 years now and find them very helpful. I include everything that I pack so that it can also serve as a checklist to remind me of what I need to pack next time. After the trip I try to make notations of what worked best, what didn't get worn, etc. No matter how light I pack there are always have things that could have been left at home.

Well, I'm with the others -- this doesn't look bad to me at all. You had the room, and might have needed all this stuff.

But Sveta's right -- numbers don't tell the story. What were you missing? (if anything) And what did you have too much of? Next time, just keep note of that and reduce or add where appropriate. :)

You and Cosmo Edward look so cute together! This is a dog that understands the semi-tuck! :)

I am not a minimal packer; I generally pack a complete outfit or two for each day. And then a few extra pieces for just in case! Yet I also don't like coming home and unpacking numerous items that weren't worn. On a trip last winter, I came home with exactly one top that wasn't worn and it did feel good to get it so right! Then in May for a trip to FL, I had quite a few unworn pieces. The weather was not good and we didn't do as much as I had thought we would nor need as many outfits as planned.

I think you did just fine but I also think it's good that you wrote it all down. That should certainly help for next time.

And you and Cosmo both look beautiful!

Rachylou, Firecracker, and Mona, I do like to have a few backups in case of spills, but I have been spending a good part of this afternoon putting away all the clothes I packed but didn't wear - and that is what I'd like to avoid. I'm tired of packing and unpacking half a suitcase of unworn clothes. There's got to be a better way!

I think it's a brilliant idea to travel somewhere and take photos of what you actually wear, and pack that the next time.

Nice job! I think having a few extra tops that don't take up much space is not really a problem. I like to have a backup or two in case of spills or a change of heart about what to wear. Love the maxi dress outfit. Your vacation photos are beautiful!

Karie, you did really well putting together a well thought out little travel capsule. I agree that if there are no luggage limitations, you did not need to worry about the amount of clothes. From what I can see on you list, every thing got worn. So that is all okay.

BethL, Viva, and Jackiec, I only wore that striped maxi once - I had intended to wear it to dinner with Suz and Mona, but I noticed the night before that the side seam needed to be mended at the bottom and I didn't have needle and thread. That's another thing I should always pack - a small sewing repair kit. I could condense all the items I only wore once and pick one to wear more often. I do like to have a dressy option, although I always say I'm going to dress up for dinner but don't usually.

BethL, the studded sweatshirt really could have stayed home since I only wore it once. The 3/4 sleeve sweatshirt proved to be more versatile. I am totally in love with my Gap BF's and the Gap 3/4 crops (as much as one can be in love with clothing!), and even though I really didn't need both pair, I can't see not bringing them along.

Sveta, there wasn't anything missing, but if the weather had been warmer, I would have needed more shorts and at least one more pair of board shorts.

Claire, there are a lot of items I didn't wear, I went back and added them. The weather is usually warmer than it was this year, but my pattern seemed to be to wear each bottom twice, each tee/summer top once, each jacket/pullover multiple times. The Loft linen pullover (purchased last summer) was a dark horse standout - it worked for both cooler and warmer evenings.

Catnip, Carole, Mo, and Angie, it seemed like a small amount of clothes, but when I got home and typed the list it seemed like much more. I do like to have options, and I always pack a lot of tops because we're outdoors most of the time and things get, well, stinky! As much as we love the great outdoors, we don't camp, we stay in a hotel, so it's OK to pack a little too much as there is somewhere to put it :)

You and Cosmo Edward are just so adorable! Honestly, Karie, I'm with the others. I think you did really well. You were totally prepared for unexpectedly cooler weather, and you had appropriate clothing for everything you did. The only thing you could do is leave out anything you didn't wear at all, or maybe wore only once but wouldn't miss, though I can't imagine what that might include. You wouldn't have wanted to leave your maxi home (how fab you looked!) or your studded sweatshirt and Gap crops, right?

Are there items you didn't wear at all that you're not showing here? Because this list looks pretty good. The kind of vacation you took required lots of different types of clothes and involved getting wet a lot. You could create a capsule from what you did wear, but then what happens if the weather is different next year? Sometimes it pays to over pack.

I think you did really well, based on how often you wore your items. Its hard too when you aren't exactly sure what the weather will be like, or with variations like you had. I am smiling b/c I am heading up to visit my family soon with the kids, and it will involve a little camping. My capsule will be very similar to yours (minus the dressy stuff).

The Backstory: We just returned from a week long vacay to a small town on Lake Ontario - Sackets Harbor, NY. As usual, I packed waayy too much. In an effort to streamline future packing, I took what I actually wore and photographed the items. My plan was to make this list, photo the items, and create a capsule.

The Specifics: Outdoor all day, every day. Biking, paddle boarding, kayaking, boating, walking, sight seeing, outdoor dining, and playing fetch in the park (Cosmo Edward wanted to make sure I included that).

The Weather: Low 70's (cooler than average) for the first half of the week, low 80's (usual average) to finish it.

The Clothes:
Bottoms:
1 pair Gap BF jeans (worn two evenings)
1 pair lightweight True Religion Brianna jeans, lightweight, aqua color (worn one day/two additional evenings)
1 pair Gap Straight ¾

Jackets/Pullovers
Munro bomber (worn twice)
Loft breezy linen long sleeved pullover (multiple wearings)
Navy/white striped hoodie (multiple wearings)
F21 ¾ sleeved sweatshirt (multiple wearings)
lF21 long sleeved cat face studded sweatshirt (worn once)

Other:
1 F21 striped maxi dress and Calvin Klein cropped white lightweight denim topper (worn once)
PJ’s
Cropped sweats for early a.m./late p.m. dog potty walks

Shoes:
Target white sneakers (multiple wearings)
White Converse Hi-Ness (worn once)
SE Trina’s (gray) (multiple wearings)
Bass Sunjun sandals (black) (multiple wearings)

The Bottom Line: I feel I could have paired this down a little further. One less pair of jeans, and definitely fewer jackets/pullovers. The Loft linen pullover came out to play many times and turned out to be the perfect topper, as did the F21 3/4 sleeve sweatshirt. I almost didn't bring the Loft Sunwashed tops, but they turned out to be worth their weight in gold - perfect to wear with board shorts when kayaking or paddle boarding, and perfect for wearing about town. I also could have done with fewer shoes, but I liked having the variety of footwear. I also wish I would have added one more pair of board shorts.

The Photos:
#1, the clothes
#2 - the striped maxi
#3 - meeting with Suz and Mona - I drove up to Canada and spent a fun evening with these two fabulous fabbers!
#4 - TR jeans, Loft Sunwashed top
#5 - F1 studded sweatshirt, Gap 3/4 distressed jeans
#6 - the sunset - going, going, gone

Sorry for such a long post! What are your packing strategies? Could I pair down even more, or was this about right?

EDIT: Photo 7 - What I packed but didn't wear:

Two more graphic tees (I guess I really like graphic tees!), two solid color tees, J.Crew 3/4 sleeve striped top, Jessica Simpson distressed denim vest, JCP long sleeve thin pullover, two short sleeve cardigans, one long sleeve button down, one linen short sleeve top, one pair of Geoffrey Beene for Women white capri length pants. I mean, seriously, I packed enough tops for another week away!
