I'm smiling, Angie! Rockstuds are sitting on my suitcase, along with my floral sheath (pictured below). The long black BCBG jacket might need to come along too -- it seems to make any jeans outfit instantly occasion-ready!

Gaylene has the right of it. We were rural most of the time so it was gear style and hiking boots. Urban sleek for the city. My experience was that the weather swung dramatically during the day - from very warm in the sun, to quite chilly in the shadows of the mountains. My avatar pic was actually taken during our Norway vacay.

You can see the 'cabin' we stayed in, in the lower right corner of pic #1. It had a sod roof!

Sounds like you will be having an adventure!

Hmm, just another thought. Don't make the mistake that I did in thinking Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm march to the same beat. My Danish and Norwegian relations straightened me out quite quickly on that score. Think of it as the difference between New York, Denver, and San Francisco. Same country but different tribes.

When it comes to dressing, Angie is right that the women in Stockholm dress in a cool, hip style and look utterly gorgeous. Copenhagen, though, was more like hipster San Francisco, while Oslo was outdoorsy Denver with an dash of Portland. Wear your hip, urban clothes in Stockholm, your leather jacket and jeans in Copenhagen, and your super cool outdoor gear in Oslo.

Good question! It seems like it could vary from warmish days in the 70s to cooler ones in the 50s and 60s, a likelihood of rain here and there, and overnight lows as low as in the 40s. So quite a range, depending on where we end up. I'm thinking of taking maybe 3 short sleeve tops that can be worn on warmer days and layer with a jacket, and several long sleeve tops. The new NAS tops (below with some other Finds I'm packing) are already in my bag. I want to take the striped handkerchief hem Anthro top from this year too. Black moto pants, and possibly the navy ones as well, since they travel so well and are so versatile. One or two pairs of jeans -- dark wash skinnies/straights and maybe flares (depending on what footwear I choose). Probably the new Zella capris (which I am wearing today) and perhaps navy clamdiggers shorts in case of warmer days.

Hmm. I will need to think about this more tomorrow!

When we were in Oslo last year, I only had casual/gear, as it was a stopover on the way to Svalbard, but I didn't feel out of place at all. You MUST go to the the Fram musuem. Its all about polar exploaration, it actually has the ship inside which you are allowed onto. We are not musuem types, but this is so well done and so interesting, best musuem we have ever been to.

Also if you get to Stavengar (?) we did a tour of the sardine factory musuem. We didn't have much time and it was a spur of the moment decision. It sounds odd, however it was quite fascinating.

Hope you have a great birthday.

Well, we started planning this trip with a more rural intention, so I think my usual packing routine made sense for that. The more urban plan is a recent development within the last 24 hours! It may well end up that we do a little of both. And we leave on Sunday -- ack! The planner (me!) is definitely operating outside of her comfort zone by packing for unknown spontaneous plans! LOL

Janet, why would you travel in gear in an urban setting? It makes sense for a sporty and outdoorsy holiday - but an urban one is different, don't you think?

Oooh, good to know, Angie! I was thinking more in gear mode because that's so often how I travel. But it will be fun to pack some GOOD clothes, especially after a week in bike shorts!

Jacket-wise, do you think I will find a leather jacket useful? Perhaps for evenings? How about my husband? He generally just throws some tees and jeans in a bag and calls it done, but maybe a nice button-front shirt too? And a nice pair of shoes to dress up his good jeans for dinner?

Drat, just lost a longer post and have to rush out. Condensed version:

YES to the train ride Oslo to Bergen--jaw-dropping scenery and Bergen is a neat old port city to explore. Walk around the old wharf area, eat shrimp from a bag, take the funicular to the top of the mountain, yes, do some shopping. In Oslo, don't miss Frogner Park with the Vigeland sculptures. Spend a morning wandering around the Viking ship museum, open-air cultural museum, and old stave church (all within easy walking distance), then visit the park in the afternoon. Spend the next morning at the National Museum/Art Gallery and stop at the TheatreCafe in the Continental across from the National Theatre for a bit of old-world ambiance. Pricey, but, if you stick to coffee and cake, worth the experience.

Yes, also to Copenhagen (one of my favourite cities!). Rent a bike, or use a city one, to tour around during the day--everyone from 5-95 bikes in Copenhagen. Eat a hotdog from a stand and drink a beer sitting on a bench next to the water (perfectly legal!). Buy a pastry with your coffee--the Danes call Wienerbrod ( Viennese bread) instead of a Danish. Visit Tivoli in the evening--fewer crowds, more adult-friendly, and better ambiance. Shop on the Stroget--middle of the morning has fewest people-- and enjoy people watching as well as some amazing Danish design.

Pack for summer in a coastal mountain climate. Layers and some rainwear. Nice casual works almost everywhere. Most Danes and Norwegians are into an active lifestyle so well-designed, gear-style clothing is fine. Colours tend to be muted and functional with flair is a way of life.

Janet, happy birthday in advance! And what an incredibly exciting trip. I feel like we are living parallel lives this year -- I am also packing for trips back to back (or even while I'm still ON one trip -- as when I had to leave China in a hurry) -- and going places without a clear plan. (I'm about to travel to the Maritimes to visit with my mother's siblings.)

Anyway, all that is to say that I sympathize, and I don't have a lot of insight except to suggest you figure out the weather patterns, keep watching the forecast like a hawk, and go prepared for any and all eventualities. If you can bring a bag to check, you're going to have an easier time of it. I would definitely bring one nice dress for your birthday celebration, and I'd also bring great walking shoes, layers, some gear like pants (maybe those ones you love). Hoping Ingunn pops on here to offer advice, but I believe she is often away at this time of year....

Have a fabulous time. Such a wonderful place to visit and see. Hope you are bringing your camera.

I agree about packing layers as the weather can vary quite a bit. My one trip to Scandinavia included a gorgeous warm sunny day in Stockholm and several cool rainy days in Copenhagen. You just never know!

And I agree with Maneera that a fairly casual dress might be nice to have, to dress up or down.

I would love to spend more time in those cities. They are beautiful! Happy Birthday!

Congratulations on the upcoming half century birthday! I've got one coming too, but don't have any epic trips planned to celebrate like you. :)

I've been to Norway a few times in the summer - to Oslo, the western fjords and the farming valleys, where some distant relatives live. It's a beautiful country!

The weather in the summer can be variable. One time I was there in July walking in the fjords and it was hot - as in sleeveless shirt and shorts hot. The other time I was there it was really cold and very rainy and I wished I had packed better as I spend a number of days being cold and wet. My suggestion is to bring layers, especially when you're in the fjords so you can take off or add whatever layers you need/don't need. A good rain jacket with a hood is a must in my opinion, as are very comfortable walking shoes.

Have fabulous trip!!

Sounds like so much fun! I have to confess I can't travel at all until n unless I have a clear cut plan. How else am I supposed to pack? But I guess, sometimes a little spontaneity is what makes all the difference....and it sure would be fun to decide where and how you wanna go from Oslo. I wish you all the best!

I don't know the area at all. But I would pack one casual dress that could be worn just as it is with flat sandals for a touristy day trip but dressed up slightly with a necklace and cuff for a nice evening out. You know, just in case. It IS YOUR BIRTHDAY after all!

Just go with the flow! Happy birthday to you in advance!

It seems I've just barely finished the laundry from my Iowa bike trip (all hot weather clothing and gear!), and now it's time to pack for my vacation with hubs in celebration of my upcoming big landmark half-century birthday. Ack! We leave the day after tomorrow, flying into Oslo, and I'm scrambling to get things done before we go AND pack for a trip for which we've barely thought through an itinerary. In fact, we seem to keep changing our minds about what we'll do once we're in Oslo. At first we were thinking we'd take the train or drive to Bergen, and then explore the fjord region and spend most of two weeks out in the coastal part of Norway. However, J and I have both had a lot of rural time in the last month or so, and we're now thinking we might like to spend a little more time in cities and towns, perhaps getting more of a taste of Copenhagen, Stockholm, etc.

So, first of all, if anyone has firsthand knowledge of what kind of clothing we might want to pack for somewhat flexible, casual travel in that area, I'd appreciate any insight. I'm thinking jeans, my moto pants, comfortable booties and walking shoes, long sleeved tees, a couple of scarves, rain jacket... Should I bother with a dress for a nice dinner? I don't know how casual the establishments are in these cities.

Also, of course, we welcome ideas of any places we absolutely should not miss! Neither of us have traveled in this region before (other than me flying through Tromso on the way to Svalbard, which doesn't count! ;-). We're feeling adventurous at the moment, but will probably want a couple of days of some really relaxing downtime at a spa or resort as well.

Thanks for indulging me in this inquiry, and all suggestions welcome! I'm so accustomed to planning my travels so thoroughly in advance, this is going to be a bit outside of my comfort zone, but hey, it will be fun!
