I went to Italy in February for a week only with a carryon and I had to put my small backpack with DSLR into the big bag too. This was EasyJet with no weight limitations, but I think my whole bag weighed in at 6 kg. And I took too much, I could have left some things at home. I also vote wear your heaviest shoes/jacket/pants on the flight, but I wouldn't layer up with a lot of clothes. I've never done it but honestly it sounds very uncomfortable to me, especially on a budget flight. You can easily pack the rest in your bag if you choose wisely what to take. As Rachylou said, I can do one week with two bottoms, I'd take one all purpose jacket/coat and plan for layering, if necessary. One pair of super comfortable shoes with maybe a second option in the bag. I only took one pair of shoes to Italy, My knee high leather boots. I knew they were beyond comfortable for whole day walking and appropriate for the temperature, so I decided against a second pair. I also try to minimize with underwear - for example I just took one cami, merino wool and non smelly for days and easily washable in the sink. And I've had the same experience as Gaylene - with a reasonably small non wheeled bag/backpack they often don't check the weight.

ETA

Here's the thread for Italy. The pics are at the end, although I made some changes to what is shown there, if you read the text.

Ok, I love that paige, wearing 3 outfits at once. Reminds me of Heidi. And also, since I'm always cold, it's brilliant!

I can do a week with one pants and one skirt. I also 'buy when I arrive' these days.

Ditto to the crazy layering on the plane. I used to fly Ryanair a lot and I would wear 3 outfits at once....

Well, I've done four weeks in Paris and London with small nylon backpack designed to hold a small laptop computer that weighed under 12 pounds so it certainly can be done.

On the plane, I wore a pair of lightweight, straight-legged, black pants; a lightweight cream sweater, a tan trench and my walking shoes--a black, Oxford-style shoe that I rain proofed. In my pack, I had a pair of light-weight black sandals, a couple of washable silk tops, a black silk cami, a pair of widelegged black silk pants, a black cashmere cardigan, a change of undies and socks, a couple of scarves, a pair of yoga crops for lounging/sleeping, and a man's underwear t-shirt I wore for sleeping. Everything fit easily in a medium packing cube. I used one of the small mini-bags that are included in the SportSac bags for my toiletries.

If you think it was a lot of black, you are right. My only color was in my silk tops, my scarves, my cream sweater, and my tan trench. Black just works in cities, day and night. My evening outfit for dinner and the theatre was my black silk pants, cami, sandals, and cardigan worn with earrings and a cuff. My hot-weather outfit was rolled-up straight-legged pants, a silk top, and sandals. My beach outfit was my cami, yoga crops, and cream sweater. On a cold, rainy day in London, I wore my black straight-legs, the cami, a silk top, my cream sweater, trench, scarf, oxfords, and trench. My wardrobe pretty much covered every situation and event, but I did spring for some cheap beach sandals that got tossed before we headed home.

I actually was never asked to put my bag on the scale at RyanAir or EasyJet, although most people had to do that when picking up their boarding passes. The only thing I can come up with to explain this,is that the staff thought my bag was just a handbag, not a carryon.

Oh, and I'll just add that I purposely didn't layer on the plane because 1. I knew I'd have to find somewhere to stash the extra clothes while traveling between destinations, and 2. I dislike feeling bulky, hot, and uncomfortable on the planes. The discount airlines tend to cram as many people as possible on a flight and those seats and overhead bins can be SMALL.

Happy travels and I agree with Traci I just traveled today and doubled up on the clothing I wore. It kept me warm on the plane and kept my bag lighter
I had to take care of SM carry on bag also.

I made a capsule for Florida in January that fit in my personal item and was shocked to realize that I could have worn 3/4 of my items onto the plane if I'd been willing to do some creative layering.

It may sound crazy, but you can put together a halfway reasonable looking outfit with a tank, under a dress, under a cardigan, under a blazer, with a trench on top and skinny jeans and boots on your bottom half. Two more tanks, and a pair of shoes in a bag and you've got tons of options.

I'm not familiar with the airline...but I love the challenge of packing light. We packed for three weeks in a carry-on to tour Paris, Rome, Florene and Venice. I wasn't probably the most fashion forward tourist that ever visited but I was happy with my outfits...scarves can change up the same outfit pieces and comfy versatile shoes are imperative. Good luck and have fun!

Oh, I'd love to hear how you find the airline. I saw they were starting flights out of boston and was tempted by the cheap, cheap fares. The other super budget Euro airlines I've flow (Ryan air and easy jet) weigh when you check in and not at the gate.

As for packing, I'd limit the number of jeans. They are shockingly heavy! Wear your heaviest clothing (coat, jeans, biggest shoes), although you might overheat in the airport.

I don't know the answer to your second question, I'm afraid, but maybe someone else will.

And I haven't flown that airline, so I'm not much good with that question, either!

But I do hope you have a fabulous time! I would wear my heaviest stuff. I think you could still take a laptop (if desired) in your personal article, if they allow you to have one.

My husband and I are going to London next week on Wow Air - a low cost airline in Iceland. We got amazing fares and decided to forego paying for luggage. This means that we are both limited to 11 pounds of carry on baggage each. We've found sufficiently light bags that weigh less than a pound. If any of you have flown on Wow, it would help me to know when the bags are weighed. I know they are weighed when you get your boarding pass. But do they weigh the bags again before you get on the plane? Obviously we will limit the pairs of shoes we bring, we won't bring a laptop, and we will be practical. Still, any hints are appreciated!

On a side note, I am debating between two Lesportsac bags - a voyager backpack and a medium weekender. I was thrilled to find both at TJ Maxx and Nordstrom Rack. But I'm less thrilled now that I see they are made out of polyester (not nylon). Does anyone know when Lesportsac stopped using nylon?
