Really good advice so far. One thing I haven't seen, or have overlooked while browsing the thread, is taking a ziplock plastic bag with you. Or something along those lines that is waterproof. If you have something damp to bring back with you, you can put it in the bag.

If you are packing extra shoes, consider putting them in cloth or plastic bags to keep them from getting dirt on your other clothes.

I am a big fan of rolling clothes when I pack. Try it.

I second the sweats and tee alternative to PJs, but try to choose sweats or yoga pants and a t-shirt that you wouldn't mind wearing in public if you had to.

Bring several, thin layers. Put a cami or thin t-shirt in your pack, some thin socks you can layer with your thicker ones, the shawl others have already mentioned which can double as a scarf when you wear your coat, etc. Maybe pack a pair of cotton tights that you can layer under your jeans if it's really cold.

I always pack a change of underwear, socks, and shirt in my carry-on bag if I am checking a suitcase, and a toothbrush, toothpaste, and moisturizer in my toiletries bag. If I get stuck without a bag those are the bare minimum items I would want for an overnight stay, and I usually wear jeans that can be worn multiple times. For bonus points I try to pack quick-drying stuff in my carry-on so that in a dire emergency they can be washed in a sink and dried overnight. I also take a big scarf or pashmina because it is inevitably freezing at some point during the flight.

All great advice here!

A couple of other comments. If your plane is likely to be very small (like a commuter plane on a regional airline), a wheeled bag may not fit in the overhead compartment. I was traveling on one of these recently and was glad that my overnight bag was even smaller than a traditional carry-on roll aboard. On the other hand, they will usually allow you to check the carry-on that does not fit right before boarding, free of charge.

I love polyester blouses that can be rolled up in a tiny packet and don't wrinkle. I generally like rolling up clothes and putting them in a large ziploc bag - works really well. Or an Eagle Creek Pack-it Folder (15 is the smaller size, good for a couple days trip) is great.

I put my toiletry kit in the main carry-on but take out any liquids and gels and place them in a ziploc bag in an outside pocket on the carry-on, to make them easy to remove when going through security.

A checkpoint-friendly laptop bag is nice, too (I've used mine for about 6 trips now and only had to take my laptop out once).

All of the above and the link Manidapa suggested is excellent. Also http://theviviennefiles.blogsp.....h?q=travel. I always pack my underwear in one of those zip lingerie bags - would be mortified to open back around work colleagues with knicks floating around! Yes I always keep liquids in same handbag as laptop etc so that the security thing is all in one bag so you are not riffling through everything. That sometimes means I pack 2 toiletry bags one with the liquids to go through security and one with other items in the bag w clothes etc That is not likely to be opened near work colleagues. Apart from that HAVE fun!

Lyn I never thought of that! Do they make bras with plastic underwires or something? I don't think I will be traveling a lot, just several times int eh next two months, then possibly done for awhile.
You absolutely have me laughing about your dad. Mine was the same way when we ran into each other at the grocery store and he blushed at the sight of my tampons.

If you travel a lot, you may consider investing in a airport security friendly bra. Mine rang in the machine and I needed a pat down. It wouldn't have been bad, but my dad was all like, what is going on? And he looked confused when I said I needed a bra. I'm not 11, dad. :p

I think the other ladies have mostly got you covered. I will add:

--make sure you can heft your bag over your head easily, since you'll have to get it into the overhead bin, and you can't always count on someone helping you.

--planes always seem to be either too hot or too cold, so dress in layers. A big shawl is nice, you can use it as a blanket or pillow too.

--if you have a laptop, I recommend putting it in a sleeve. You have to take it out for security but if it has a single layer sleeve (not a bag), that can stay on. It protects the laptop plus it deters thieves since they can't see what kind it is.

--personally I keep my liquids bag in my purse, at least until I get through security. It's easier than having to open my suitcase.

Less than 2 weeks ago Omaha had several inches of snow on the ground. I suspect that you will need boots/booties that can take snow and won't slip on ice even if there's no new snow.
Whatever footwear that you wear on the plane, wear some sort of socks or peds so that you won't be barefoot on airport floors when you have to remove them and go through security. I'd probably wear short zip off or pull off boots.
It will be cold with a wind chill.
I have to eat every two hours so I travel with protein bars and a baggie of nuts. Sometimes small airports don't have anything open to buy food, depending on the time of your flight. This is especially true if you have a delayed late flight.
ETA: Most of the snow has melted my SIL says

I learned the hard way, no matter what the season, always bring extra underwear. You just never know.
One thing to keep in mind, even if the weather where you are is ok, the plane is probably coming from somewhere else.

Excellent ideas, everyone, thank you!

kkards, thanks for the app suggestion. I know Omaha got snow a little while ago, and weather delays hadn't even occurred to me. Does that mean I should pack extra undies and stuff in case I'm delayed?

Zap, really great points, thank you. I have the little rolling bag and my laptop bag, so I'm just saying 'no' to the bag lady look. I appreciate the comments about traveling with coworkers, but I am traveling alone for this trip. All the same, a good reason to have lightweight luggage!
Excellent point about the pjs....even not in front of coworkers, I don't want to be running around in an emergency situation in the middle of the night in boxer briefs and a tiny tank.

So, to follow up...what about snacks on the plane? Can I bring a piece of fruit or pack a lunch? There will be no meal service on the flight, but I'll need to land and get right to work, so I'd like to multitask and eat en route.

Thanks!

ok, about the liquids. I do have a pouch that is padded and waterproof. I put everything in there and inside my luggage. Try to pair down to the minimum and also, avoid yourself the aggravation, don't take glass bottles. Airlines no longer allow fragile tags, unless you are flying business class or better and these luggages just fly thru the air.

I am a somewhat light packer so I don't roll stuff, just neatly fold my clothes, but look up rolling clothes / packing, if you want to see it. It is basically rolling your clothes so they wrinkle less and you can fit more. Also, most seasoned business travelers have only one piece of luggage and a purse or laptop bag. Avoid yourself embarrassment and don't be the lady with the multiple bags. Also, try to keep your bag light. when you travel with men especially, they usually offer to handle your luggage. You don't want to be the one with the ton of bricks bag... no, no.

As a side note, I always suggest sweatpants and a tee for sleeping rather than a nightgown or pjs. there was a fire at one of the hotels I stayed at once, and had to leave my room, to meet my colleagues in my heart patterned pjs... never again.

My suggestion always is to take the less amount of shoes as possible. Those are heavy.

About airport security, et al. You got to take your shoes off, so try to have something you can easily take off. Also, avoid clothing with metal details or excessive hardware. That will sound of the metal detector, so It will slow everyone down.

The key for business traveling is to not slow anyone down...

If you are working the same day that you arrive, remember you might not have access to your luggage until Nighttime, when you check in to your hotel. when that happens, I make sure to have a travel size toothpaste, toothbrush and other toiletries, maybe a small lipgloss in my purse. You do not want to open your luggage in front of colleagues to get stuff, and have your undies flying out of something. no.no.

That is all I can think of for now, but ask away. I have been traveling for business, at least a week a month, for the past 10 years. Trust me, I've done each and every mistake unimaginable.

If it doesn't fit in the carryon, you can wear the fleece on the plane-- (I'm always cold on planes too). Also, I agree that it is nice to have shoes that slip off easily to get through security, but sometimes I have to wear my bulkiest shoes because they take up too much room in my carry-on. So I might wear my running shoes or boots on the plane.

Have fun!

1. make sure that they suitcase is lightweight and easy to lift.
2. the shoes you wear for travel days should be easy to get on and off, and if possible, don't wear a belt or much jewelry (it's a pain in the butt getting it all off and back on for security)
3. try to pack stuff that doesn't need much ironing, because no matter how neatly and/or tightly you pack, things will move around.
4. if possible, i like to have my liquids bag in an outside pocket, so that i don't have to open my entire suitcase. but if not, i always make sure it is the last thing i pack, so that it is on top.
5. dress in layers for the plane, or better yet, bring a large scarf that can double as a shawl.
6. if you have a smartphone, either download the airlines app or one of the other travel/flight apps that will notify you of delays or gate changes. i find these super helpful, especially when traveling in the winter.

have a great trip!

Full Disclosure: I am in full on nervous nelly mode.
3 days, 2 night business trip starting Tuesday. This isn't about WHAT to pack....it's about HOW to pack. Any of you who travel often, can you give some tips on how to physically put it all in the suitcase? This is a field operations visit, so that means my bag will contain:
jeans
loafers
2 basic but nicer tops (something long sleeve, as weather report for Omaha looks cold)
logo fleece for when I'm with the dogs
liquids bag (aaaargh!)
pjs

Sorry to ask such a silly question, but I've only traveled a very little bit, and never carry-on only for business. Also, any tips for flying? Things every frequent flyer should know. Getting excited, but a bit nervous. I just want to do well and concentrate on the work, not my suitcase.

Thanks!
