You learned a lot, Anne. And I'm glad you had a great trip.

It ALWAYS cools down at night by the coast. Must bring cover-ups. I have learned the hard way too.

Michelle - so good to hear from you!! Yes it was a wonderful vacation, even more so because we hadn't expected, and couldn't have afforded, to have any time away at all (a relative offered Mum the use of their house while they were away). It was indeed very refreshing and I sure miss the moderate climate (over 100 today)!

Dimity - yes I am a big dressing gown advocate. It was a lightweight one that didn't take much space too. And re aprons - I have at least one grease spot that aprons could have avoided.
Suz - yes my mum managed with just her fleece jacket and I did take a longer lightweight cardi. I do like the full length of my dressing gown though!
Shiny - that is high praise indeed!! I hope your coveraup rec will help someone. It does seem a little hot for Australian climates.

Beth Ann - thanks - it was a much needed break. I have gone from job to job without a long break for 2 years (apart from the odd few days to, for example, move house) so to have 10 days holiday was just amazing. I read so much!
(Couldn't do much YLF as the internet was slow and my phone typing slower) To your point about sleepwear, I probably could have subbed my sleepwear out and worn a tee and tracksuit pants (which is what I would have liked to have brought) Funny about your suede booties - have they recovered?
Joy - thanks. I know you are a master at minimal packing. I have used my lightweight puffer coat as a dressing gown sub myself, on other trips!

It sounds like a wonderful vacation, Anne. I usually use either a trench coat or a beach coverup to do double duty as a dressing gown, depending on the weather. I use socks or "footies" as slippers indoors.

Sounds like a glorious vacation, Anne! So glad you got away!

Sounds like you did well with a minimum capsule. I always sleep in nice lounge wear on vacation -- it can double as walking/exercise gear, and I always pack one more pair of shoes than I think will be needed. This Christmas that was fortunate, as I treated a pair of suede booties, leaving them on the step to dry. And....they spend the Holiday frozen to the step. Hee.

Anne, I don't know if you have this where you are, or if it's easy to order, but this is my beach coverup - from Athleta:

http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....=906170132

I got it awhile ago for our Costa Rica trip. I thought I got the petite, maybe not. It's tunic length on me, hits below crotch point. Meaning I can wear it without shorts but it works perfectly fine with shorts too, or cargo zip pants. I really appreciate the UV 50 protection. And the long sleeves & hood & pockets -- for when it gets breezy and cool.

When it comes to beach & gear, this is one of the best purchases I made in probably the last 10 years.

What a beautiful spot! It sounds as if you have made some good decisions for future trips. I often wear a long cardigan or hoodie as a combination dressing gown/ additional layer.

I so rarely see a dressing gown on a packing list, but they are terrific to have for relaxed lounging, especially if there are people other than my husband around. And aprons, too! Aprons are great clothes savers.

Wise notes, Anne! I learned the hard way about coverups years ago and will never, ever be without one again. Also sounds smart to have shoes designated exclusively for beach use. Bonus points if you can manage to never bring them indoors at all except in a plastic bag! :)

Most importantly though, so glad you and the family had a wonderful holiday! I'm so with you on cooler summer temperatures. I hope you found the rest and change of pace as refreshing as the climate. Your reply

I have just returned from an absolutely wonderful holiday on Australia's southern coast. Breathtaking scenery and a very nice cooler summer weather (maxes in the 20's which I much prefer to where I live in the city)

Before I left I posted about packing http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/packing-1 and this is just a follow-up, mostly for my own records.
We were away for 10 days and I had washing facilities
I took 3 each of short sleeve tops, bottoms and shoes, 2 long sleeve tees,2 toppers and a warm scarf and summer PJs and a dressing gown. I could actually have packed more - I was way more minimal than I needed to be
They all got worn and I managed to get through every occasion with them. (though I did supplement my climbing outfit when it got cold at the top with DH's tee worn around my neck as a tee!)
Notes for the future

1. The dressing gown was very helpful for lounging around
2. Need to pack some slippers or other shoes for wearing around the house; my beach shoes were sandy and yucky once I had worn them to the beach (on their last legs, that pair). my sneakers got muddy from a hike and my good sandals were not comfortable enough. I don't like being barefoot in the kitchen (and stepping on some steamed rice vindicated that opinion!)
3 On the same kitcheny note - pack an apron!
4.I packed only one pair of long pants (my maroon skinnies) and probably would have benefited from another pair as those climates make for cool evenings and I prefer to have my legs covered completely
5 I need to make sure that I do actually wash my clothes so they are available to wear!
6 My skirt-attached to-shorts, bought as gear, and mostly only worn as such prior to this holiday, were GREAT - worn them to the beach, hiking and siteseeing and with the shorts, perfect for lounging. I will definitely be wearing this a lot more, although it will probably be too hot for the hotter Australian summer weather.
7 two short sleeve tees were not quite enough given that once was white and I was saving it for church/ dinners out. I would have done better to substitute out the sleeveless top for one with sleeves, given how much time we spent in the sun and that I would prefer to cover up my shoulders outdoors
8. I didn't bring (don't exactly have) a coverup for the beach and while I managed, it would have been a helpful addition and saved my normal tee shirt getting salt encrusted
And lastly, if one has told one's children to pack one outfit for church, make sure they don't wear it to the beach the previous day! (didn't matter really - Aussie churches are pretty casual in holiday towns)

PS - I didn't read Shiny's suggestion on my previous thread to pack a cashmere sweater until after I had left. I don't have one - but it might have been helpful
