Sounds like an amazing trip! Love the wardrobe plans. At first I was thinking no way that was enough but when you also listed your gear it seems much more adequate.

Okay - I have made some tweaks and I think I am there.

Starting from the shoes which I am firm on

Scarpa trail runners (biking and hiking)

eva white birks (beach pool hotel)

braided sandals (city walking)

yellow sneakers (city walking)

very flat sandals (backup)

Then we move to tops

pattern blouse

Black and white stripe

white tank

Black tee

green and white stripe shirt

Navy tank

White linen

Bottoms

Palazzo pants (green paisley)

White shorts

Brown linen wide leg

Fawn cargo pants

Dresses

Black midaxi

Navy and white striped tank dress

Toppers

Grey sweatshirt

Gear (not all pictured but this is pretty clear and all needed)
2 x swimsuit
1 x red beach dress (not pictured)
3 x cycle pants
2 x active shorts (black and grey)
3 x active tee/cycling tee (grey, orchid, multi)
1 x light coral jacket
1 x black merino long sleeve

I swapped out the cardigan for the sweatshirt and decided on the cargo pants for the long haul flights.

Have a great trip Sal, but pls. take the zebra dress with you-(such a great summer vibe!), even if is not natural fibre but it can be laudered often and will dry quicker!

Sisi - come to NZ!! That would be fun. Jenni and I will entertain you.

Janet I agree re shoes! I might shop for them as I go but only in Paris at the end where I have more flexibility in bag weight.

Helena -‘thank you! Those are the pieces I am thinking of adding in too.

JAileen - me neither. There’s going to be a fair amount of washing along the way but I don’t see any way around it given the hard bag limit and the other things I need to take.

What an amazing trip! In heat and humidity I sweat so much that I can’t rewear a top without washing. I tend to overpack for that reason.

What a fantastic trip! I'm inclined to add the linen top (cool sun coverage to go over anything), another tank, and maybe the Athleta pants if they are cool and breathable. But I'm sure you're got better advice from the more reasoned travellers. Enjoy the preparations and can't wait to see photos!

Shopping along the way is definitely an option! I’m glad I only took one skirt to France. I just happened to find another great one, even though I wasn’t actively looking. It’s sage green, linen, midi, and was inexpensive at a village market. It was “one size fits most” with an elastic waist so I’d didnt even try it on, so it was a gamble, but ended up being a successful one.

The stakes are higher with footwear so I don’t like to rely on finding good shoes while traveling, but I’ve been lucky.

That’s good advice Lise!

Thanks Janet - helpful to know your thoughts and I know you are experienced at packing for varied trips needing active wear and a few good options. My dresses are pretty versatile - so I think they will work. Your advice re footwear is worth me thinking about - I like my trail runners but I could take my yellow sneakers as a city option instead of the gold sandals.

I am erring to packing less and buying something along the way if needed. I was thinking of a new skirt or tank but thought why not buy that in Croatia!

Thanks Lynne and Sisi. Must be six years since we met in Milan Sisi!’

Sal, this sounds like a fantastic trip!

I think your packing strategy is really sound for the climate and activities you describe.

I also default to an extra pair of shoes. I kinda wished for an extra pair of closed shoes like sneakers while I was in Provence. I had one pair of very casual slip-on sneakers that I wore into the ground because there were so many times I wanted my toes covered — dust, grass, even village grime. In retrospect, I would have taken one more pair of comfortable but cute low-profile sneakers like my Onitsuka Tigers (light weight but comfortable and stylish), and left one of my extra pairs of sandals at home (although they were just very light flip flops). So for me, two pairs of sandals and two pairs of closed shoes would be good, if I were trying to keep it minimal.

I’d also tighten up my bag selection. I took a hiking day pack, my Tumi convertible bag, and a fabric tote, and I bought a little packable bag in Paris that ended up being my daily carry bag — I could even fit my camera in it! So if I were doing it again, I would have left the Tumi at home.

A packable sun hat is also essential.

I would probably not take a dress unless it’s super packable and versatile — I took my Title 9 dress that serves well as a swim coverup too. I took one fancier dress that I wore out to dinner one night because darn it, I had packed it! But things were so casual I didn’t need it. You can dress up a basic top a little bit with a solid color skirt or wide leg pants, and a scarf or necklace.

I used my two “toppers” on my trip a LOT. I took a cropped blue denim shirt and a navy linen jacket/shirt, and both got lots of use. I didn’t need a sweatshirt and I don’t wear cardigans so these sufficed well — lightweight and no bulk. I usually pack a lightweight hoodie (or wear on the plane). It can be layered with the denim topper if needed. I’d leave behind anything as bulky as a sweatshirt. I’m all about the light layers.

Happy packing! I always enjoy the planning process!

We usually cool down by the end of August, sometimes as early as 20 Aug. Your braided sandal soles look perfect. I too cannot wear sneakers in summer like ANGIE. In the last few years I used to leave my business for 6 weeks to come to Bulgaria. At first it was scary for me but after I learnt to relax about it as it was all good and the break was actually excellent for mental health.

Thanks Lisa. Yes I will need to take at least five bra I think. At least half the time I will be in active wear during the days so have three active wear tees as well that will be washed out at night.

Ket - thanks! Leaning to adding in the white linen and the navy tank as well. As well as the black brooklyn pants.

Yes footwear is the key for me and while some people can get by with two or three options I think four is better for me. We spent three weeks in Italy five years ago but that was not in the hottest weather. It was hot on our outback trip but I was informally dressed for that.

What a fantastic trip! The most important thing, as you clearly understand, is footwear. Apart from the gear you need, walking around European cities is its own workout - especially if the streets are cobbled. I have learned to always have a back up pair of well worn Birks as back up. But you have thought of that, so most of all enjoy (and take lots of pictures she adds greedily )!

I know zip about traveling in the areas you'll be in. I do think packing any extra tops and undies you can makes a lot of sense. I changed clothes 2x a day when living in the Florida Keys, where it's hot and humid. I wish you well and all the joy!! It sounds like a phenomenal trip. And your wardrobe looks impeccable!!

Sounds like a lovely trip. I have found when it's a hot place, I go through bras a lot and prefer stretchy, quick drying styles (vs something padded and with a wire). Also I agree with others who suggested extra tops because you'll probably change more than once a day if it's hot.

Thank you! I forgot to link to my collection that I am https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....tion=14856

Lise - our trip is August and into Sept but expecting it to be hot. I agree the zebra dress is probably too warm. My braided sandals have a good thick sole.

Thanks Pirouette - I mostly find sandals better in summer but there are days for trainers and socks! I certainly don’t want an injury.

Thanks Cookie - the skirt is very easy to wear as it is mesh but it is polyester I think.

Thank you Brooklyn - I have five tops and two dresses definitely plus was thinking one or two of the maybes. On the bike trip I will be in activewear all day so only need evening clothes. I was thinking the white linen and the navy tank as the best options.

Thank you Suz. I am excited but nervous - firstly that DH and friends are extremely good cyclists and I am more casual. Secondly leaving our business for one month…… not easy.

The black athleta pants are probably a wise option for me as they are super light weight, quick dry and pack up super small. I don’t love them but I think I like them enough!!

Thanks Angie. I am a sandal person too and plan to mostly wear the sandals below with back up from birks and my gold sandals. My feet feel better when they are in the air. I am expecting it to be hot especially in Croatia - by Paris it will be September as we arrive 2 September there. I will need to wash clothes as we go to keep under the weight limit and have enough cycling gear.

100% what Brooklyn said. It's going to be HOT. I think hotter than you expect. There isn't much a/c in Europe, unfortunatley. Need at least a fresh top or two a day. Thankfully you have access to laundry facilities.

FWIW, this was our rather unexpected footwear experience:

We've been to Italy and Greece is very high humid heat. We got blisters from wearing sneakers. It was a disaster. Leather soled sandals was the way we went instead, and it worked out perfectly on the cobbled streets and mountains of stairs. We saw many people do just the same. We climbed up to ruins and the Acropolis in the sandals too. Zero problems with our feet post sneaker experience. The Ancient Greeks and Romans were onto something, IMO. They wore what we wore, and were way ahead of their time.

Of course, feet are different, and Lise and Pirouette's suggestions and experiences are all important! You'll have sneakers anyway - so sorted. Don't be surprised if you end up in sandals, maybe

I would probably take:
white linen shirt--looks great, works in many environments
black Athleta pants--easy to work with
hanky skirt over wide leg satin pants. has more of a timeless vibe.

This sounds like an amazing trip, Sal. Wow!

I have never travelled in this area but I would take advice from those who live there or have spent time there is summer -- it sounds as if anything polyester is going to be terrible, especially on top (I mean apart from gear). I also agree with Brooklyn about tops. And it sounds as if any bottoms should be light and airy. And footwear grippy.

Can't wait to hear how you get on with this adventure!

I would take more tops. In hot weather I find they often need washing after one wear. And, for me, if I’ve been out sightseeing all day and got hot and sweaty, I would want to change at least my top for the evening. That’s potentially 2 tops worn per day.

I agree with Lise I have been to Slovenia and wore trainers around Ljubljana as there are cobbled streets especially in the main tourist area and lots of steps. I fell many years ago while on holiday in Tunisia while wearing sandals and fractured my foot. I never wear sandals sightseeing since then.

How fab! I am in Bulgaria and mid-July to mid-August is always very, very hot. You definitely do not need any more toppers. The waistcoat is probably too warm. If your sebra dress is warm give it a miss. Only natural fibres. Jeans are never worn at this time of year either. Dresses and skirts are more airy than pants. Take the skirt and the pants. Make sure you have comfortable open sandals for cobbled streets. Obviously heels are out of the question but I find I do need a substantial sole or I get sore feet, as well as a strap that grips the ankle. I see so many tourists struggling on the cobbled streets with the wrong shoes.

Hi All

In early August I head to Europe for four weeks away. We go to Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia and France (only Paris - haha only Paris - I am excited to be going there for the first time since 1993) We also stop in Singapore on the way,

We have nine days on a cycle tour in Croatia with some hiking and some swimming etc. We will do some hiking in Slovenia and all round travelling type activities which for me include city and village walking, browsing and people watching, galleries and museums and eating in and out.

I am limited to 15kg of checked luggage and I will take a small day pack and small cross body as carry on, including a laptop etc..

It should be mostly warm to hot.

Here is a link to my collection, which are the pieces I am firmly commited to. I will have to wash clothes along the way especially my cycling gear as I have three days worth.

Collections – YouLookFab Finds

Starting from the shoes which I am firm on

Scarpa trail runners (biking and hiking)

eva white birks (beach pool hotel)

braided sandals (city walking)

gold sandals (dressy but also comfortable)

Then we move to tops

pattern blouse

Black and white stripe

white tank

Black tee

green and white stripe shirt

Bottoms

Palazzo pants (green paisley)

White shorts

Brown linen wide leg

Dresses

Black midaxi

Navy and white striped tank dress

Toppers

Buff cardigan

Gear (not all pictured but this is pretty clear and all needed)
2 x swimsuit
1 x red beach dress (not pictured)
3 x cycle pants
2 x active shorts (black and grey)
3 x active tee/cycling tee (grey, orchid, multi)
1 x light coral jacket
1 x black merino long sleeve

Plus sunglasses, cap, beachtowel etc...

What I am still deciding on (in the finds below)

Tops (one or two to add in)

Black waistcoat

White linen shirt

Navy tank

Denim shirt (could double as topper)

Bottoms (definitely one more to add)

Cream jeans OR

Athleta Brooklyn black pants OR

Fawn cargo pants (for flights - would choose one of and probably wear)

Patterned blue skirt OR

geometric palazzo pants (for evening, leaning to pants as more me than the skirt)

Topper (do I need more or will the cardigan and merino be enough along with the light running jacket)

Charcoal Sweatshirt (very casual, but very comfortable)

olive bomber (not sure about colour)

Dress (probably won't take this)

Zebra print (it is quite dressy and warm, but could be fun as well)

I am open to adding a piece or two along the way if there is a chance, a tank or a skirt for example.

I expect to be washing clothes at least once a week, on the cycle trip I will be at least washing the active wear and socks, and probably a top or two as well.

I am interested in your thoughts - I haven't packed and weighed this as yet. I cannot take less activewear and I am firm on the shoes - I need four options to protect my feet.

Thank you - I am very lucky and fortunate to be doing this! At the moment it feels quite daunting with work but I will get there!!
