On the trip to spain last year, I wore a flowy cotton black skirt that hit just below the knee with white sleeveless top and a black long sleeve cardigan over top. (Unfortunately none of those items fit me any longer, since I lost weight). Believe it or not, I was just right. I also took warm socks, and used the airplane blanket.

The nice part about the skirt was that I could sit crosslegged - indian style - in the seat, and the skirt covered my legs completely. Now I know that tall people complain a lot about airplane seats being too small, but I have really really short legs, and believe it or not, they are so short, my feet do not touch the ground! They dangle like a little kid. I usually bring along a bag that I can put under my feet to prop them up.

However, I am also too short from back of knee to sit bones, which means my back will not be aligned with the chair properly. So after an hour or two of this, my lower back starts groaning in misery because it has zero lumbar support - unless I pop my feet up and sit indian style!!

I have a long history of back problems, unfortunately, and my doctor only allows me to travel on long plane rides if I promise to get up every hour on the hour and pace about the plane to stretch. That got me into trouble on a flight to Japan: an air marshall nearly tackled me because I was walking briskly up the aisle towards first class - he thought I was a terrorist. Funny memory!

When we flew to Vienna I do remember being miserably cold - that was in October. I was wearing cordoroys and a t-neck sweater and I put my wool coat on and draped the airplane blanket around my head, because the cold air was coming down on my head. The airline stewarts wouldn't reduce the AC - something was broken in the front of the plane. Everyone in my section was turning blue!

I'll have to think this through. Maybe I will wear my comfy, flared citizens jeans - even if they aren't the trend in Paris!

Looks super Shiny. Well done!

Take dark jeans because you can wear them more than once. I don’t know if you run hot or cold, but if you run hot, this is great. If you run cold like me, you’d add more coverage. The weather can turn over night and Paris is not humid like Boston.

I’m always FREEZING on the plane. I’d pack my duvet if I could. A dress sounds so naked to wear on a long flight. Do you really want to wear something so Summery?

LOL histerically at the pad situation Shiny! Your DH is hilarious!

I second Dani, you are extremely well organized, even more stylish and everything is going to be great.

I also wear jeans for flights, but one pair that I have for such purposes. They are my 7's hemmed for flats, and they are actually one size bigger than they should be; and the denim is so soft that they stretch out a lot. They look OK after washing, when I hop on the plane, and feel almost like sweatpants; but are usually no good for third wear, two is the most I can get (sometimes even only one) before I have to wash them to shrink them back.

Dani, are you kidding? You can wear jeans during TTOM? LOL.... I think I must be pre-menopausal or something. The only jeans I can wear TTOM are the citizens with the flares, because they have a ton of give and feel like sweat pants. But Angie says flares are out in Paris.

(not that I will ever come close to looking like any of these fabulously stylish creatures: http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/)

Take a deep breath, Shiny! You are very organized and put together. I think the suggestions others have made are great. I second the dark pair of jeans (if for no other reason than that's what I tend to grab during TTOM anyway). Hope you have a fabulous time!

Wanting darker colors when it rains makes perfect sense - I always tend to reach for black when it rains. Thanks!

And Antje - YES - he is putting them in his suitcase; that's a given! :-)

You know what he's threatening to do? Bring clothes that are old and worn out, so he can wear them and then throw them away in Paris, instead of carting them back (also making room for souvenirs). He actually did that in Spain and on a trip the year before to SF, so I expect he'll do it again this time.

Oh well... he really needs to cull his closet anyhow! He has too much stuff, most of it things he's had since college or things he bought at second-hand stores because "they just don't make clothing like they used to."

Just call my Dh's style "shabby chic" LOL...

LOL again!! Well, that means extra luggage of course;-)

I would go with blue jeans Shiny, since you have the white clams for nicer weather. (Trying to be practical here; the long pants would be for when it's chilly, and that might involve some rain in Europe, and then I just prefer a darker colour, does that make sense?)

And I understand completely, I don't like wearing jeans on the plane either!

Inge, if just one long pair of pants - white jeans or blue jeans?

Of course, the obvious solution is to wear the long jeans on the plane - but I just can't do that. Is it just me or what? I can't understand how anyone can wear jeans on a plane! I swell to amazing sizes when I'm on a long flight.

Okay you want to know the funniest part? Just between us women? It's going to be TTOM for all three of the females going on this trip! And none of us like tampons. My teens actually prefer the big bulky pads to the ultra-thin ones. So DH and I are trying to figure this out... we could probably fill half a suitcase with pads only!

(He insists we bring 'em along and don't buy them there... he's so frugal-minded... exchange rate, and all that... I think I will change his mind before he starts trying to figure out how to vacuum-pack them in using Space bags or something.... )

I'm really curious about your GAP jacket as well, by the way. Could you perhaps wear one cardi underneath that on the plane, that leaves more room in your suitcase and would still allow you your 4 cardigans?

And yes, definitely bring one pair of long pants. The weather is quite unpredictable.

Antje, I thought I might need to cut out a cardi. The trouble is, which one... I love them all. :-(

Plane part is always a tough one to figure out... personally, I would love to just wear sweats... but Angie - and my mother! - would roll over in their graves (proverbial graves - neither being quite dead yet).

My mother always taught me to dress up for airplane travel, but that was before they shrunk all the seats and squashed them in so tight.

Great planning. The only suggestion I have is to reconsider the white clam diggers on the plane (at least for the trip there), since I find it easy to get dirty while traveling. But that might just be me I also don't know if you need 4 cardis (it's probably going to be warm), considering you're also taking a trench. But I know it's your signature look, so it's just something to keep in mind IF your things don't all fit...

Thanks for the feedback!

I am being meticulous about this because last year when we went to Spain I took a huge, awkward bag and wore less than half of what I brought! This year I am determined to fit it all in a smaller bag, and wear every last thing that I bring.

On the plus side, since we're doing a home exchange, I can do laundry if necessary. I would prefer NOT to do any laundry, since it's vacation, but it's an option.

I do agree with LauraElizabeth that it is likely I will be changing frequently. So I am okay with wearing, say, clams during the day and switching into a dress for dinner, and thus wearing certain outfits or pieces more often than I have listed.

Tanya, I doubt we will have any nights without our teens in tow, but I think that the black & white sheath is dressy enough for a romantic dinner ... with children in tow! If I have room, maybe I'll throw in that silk flowered BR skirt I wore recently. I did like that outfit!

Actually: I am spending my 43rd bday there!! So that may be our big night out at someplace fancy. Hmmm... maybe I'll have to dig up a little black dress... I have a few, I just always pack one and then NEVER wear it!

If I get a chance, I'll take a photo of the cobalt top.

Wow Shiny, this is impressive! Excellent planning! I'm in the middle of my own for my NM trip, so I can appreciate all the thought you've put into this!

I agree on bringing a pair of long pants and a jacket just in case. I even might
add one simple LS knit top to layer under cardi under jacket in case it's really, really cold.

I'm very curious to see the cobalt top you are describing. And, is there any chance you might have a romantic dinner or something similar fancy at evening? I might trow in one nicer dress for that.

I think one extra pair of pants and a jacket would be wise, if you can fit them in your luggage. I found that I was in Paris I changed outfits more than I thought because I was too hot or sweaty. It is better to be prepared than to be sorry! The different combinations sound like you have plenty of options to be flexible! Your planning sounds fantastic!

I'm not sure what I'm going to wear on the plane to and from, but here's what I've mapped out so far - I actually have this in a spreadsheet - one outfit per day, so I can sort and see how often I am wearing individual pieces, to see if it justifies taking them along.

In a nutshell, it works out that I'm bringing:

- denim clams to be worn 4 times
- white clams only once - maybe on the plane too
- two skirts that can be worn twice each
- one skirt (the H&M grey and white one) that I have down for one wearing, but I could work it with other items as needed
- three dresses
- four cardis - green, white, pink and turquoise
- two pairs of flats and one pair of sandals
- 8 tops
- one purse (the light green tote)
- one black lightweight, easily packable, trench coat and umbrella

Mind you, I haven't tested to see if this will all fit in my bag yet. Hee hee! But, I'm tiny so my clothes don't take up much space. ;-)

The detail is below... Obviously, I won't wear these in this order - I have it sorted this way so you can see how I can get multiple uses out of certain items.

Please critique and let me know what you think!

The white clams are getting only one use here...

Depending on weather forecast, and how much room I have in the bag, I may throw in my white jeans too.

As far as the plane ride goes, I'm not sure .... I won't wear jeans because I swell too much and find them uncomfy for planes. I might wear a dress, or perhaps the white clams.

I did buy this UBER-comfy, hooded, lightweight, ultra-soft knit empire style, buttoned long-sleeve jacket, in a cobalt blue, from the Gap outlet recently. It's neither hoodie nor sweatshirt. I can't describe it, and it's not on their site.

It actually looks quite trendy and cute thrown over white clams. I bought it to wear on the plane, in lieu of a pashmina, but it will be nice for cooler days if there are any, or just throwing over my nightgown too.

I'm afraid the pashmina idea just doesn't work for me - I'm too short for it. I look like I'm dragging around a Linus blanket, not a stylish wrap.
