One concern with sandals is dirt and keeping my cut covered. Anyway, I have both options and I’m off. Thanks everyone!

Yes to the purple dress! For heat and humidity I'd definitely go the skirt/dress route, instead of so many pants.
Sorry about your foot Hope it'll be ok for all the hiking- and yes to hiking sandals!

Jenni - one of the long pants is mostly for plane rides because they're the most comfortable pants I own. So really 3 pants in the mix with a possible 4th if I get bored, and I feel the 3 pants all have different purposes. The pants I took out were the shortest (hit my calf somewhere). And hey, you've been there and I haven't and I asked for feedback! My trip isn't quite two weeks long anyway...

FashIntern - thongs are for night time, and also because I have the kind of feet that need to have the shoes swicthed up a bit. I can't wear the same ones day in and out when I travel, which for me is VERY walking heavy.

Have a fantastic trip—maybe the warm will be enjoyable after the weather you’ve had for the last month. I’ve never been, but that dress with a pink floral pattern on dark (blue?) background is the style I’d take several of, plus wraps for temples/planes/any ac. The Ecco sandals look like they could be good hiking shoes, depending on how well they meld to your feet. When will you wear the thongs?

Hi again, I’m sorry I’ve forgotten now how many pairs of pants or shorts you were taking originally! I had one pair shorts so two would be heaps, and the pants that come just below the knee sound very useful, plus the ones you are travelling in, plus another if you wish. Obviously up to you but I didn’t find I needed to reach for more than the one long pants and one 3/4 pair. I wore the shorts a lot and then wore the 3/4 pants when I was washing the shorts.
Just looked back at your Finds and it looks like 4 pair long pants in there? That seems too many for 2 weeks. I wore my maxi dress out to dinner a few times and only needed to wash it once during the trip, as dinners were never far from where we were staying.
So I don’t have an exact number to recommend, just thought you were overpacking long pants xx

Jenni - I don't have mid-length pants, so it's either shorts or long pants

Were you recommending earlier that I just leave off one of the longer pairs of pants? (I had two shorts in at that point.) Because the pair I left off comes to just below my knee. I appreciate your help very much indeed, but just trying to make sure I understand what you're recommending to me!

ETA - I wish I could use slip on sneakers for the temples but the risk of injury in my case is just too great, The sprained ankle wasn't my only injury while traveling that was due to poor footing in rough terrain. I am CLUMSY. So I'll have to suck up taking my boots on and off. I can always change to the sport sandals after the first day if I feel it's okay to do so.

Yes you probably don’t need 3 pair of shorts, I only took one pair. Several people in our group took hand sanitiser and that’s a good idea- I like the feel of wipes better if my hands have felt yucky, and had some small handbag sized ones. I was also going to wash clothes in my room and did that the first time but then Neil got his done at a laundry which felt quicker than doing by hand and they were presented back to him all beautiful in a bag! Since the laundries were open long hours we found it easy enough to fit that around day trips.
I wore my Skechers for the temple type areas but we didn’t do Angkor Wat, stayed in Vietnam only. Easy on/off shoes for temples are good.

Thanks, Angie! My foot doesn't hurt - the middle toe joint is is little wonky but there's no pain and the cut is healing fine. I'm good to go.

kkards - it is pretty great!

Laurel - yes, this sounds like a situation where I want the ankle support. I know being able to slip off shoes is desirable, but since I sprained my ankle on some uneven steps in the Roman forum, I can't be too careful. If there is anything to climb up, my husband will want to do it--it's a running joke with us. Your intel has persuaded me that the boots ar ethe way to go.

I didn't know about the USD thing! I haven't read my guidebooks yet but plan to peruse them on the plane.

Regarding boots and ankle support at Angkor Wat--- I wouldn't say that boots are necessary, however, there are LOTS of places with uneven surfaces, and there are opportunities (not mandatory) to climb up extremely steep and extremely narrow steps---also abrupt changes in light quality as you walk from BRIGHT sunlight into VERY DARK passages, some with scaffolding, etc. The stones that you are walking on are worn down and uneven, so if you aren't 100% sure-footed, I can see where boots would provide some security!

I totally agree about the mosquitoes, and totally agree about carrying tissue and sanitizer with you. I bought a very small belted bag, which was just large enough to hold those items, my sunglasses and phone. I was very happy to have it. Around the temples, there are some designated "tourist" toilets, and they were in great shape. Other places are hit and miss. I won't go into any details about that.

the USDollar is used in Siem Reap, and it's good to have a lot of singles available---you may have the opportunity to receive "blessings" in the temples, and having US $ handy is critical.

Any of you who went to Angkor Wat- is it best to wear my hiking boots there? I injured myself previously at an ancient site by spraining my ankle in the Roman Forum. Between this and the story above, you can see that I’m clumsy and want ankle support if there is any chance I could trip on uneven ground :p

Laurel and Jessikams - thank you for the on the ground reporting! Jessikams - was protection for any electronics necessary? Like a dry bag?

Jenni - the long pants are for the need to keep my knees covered at the temples (I didn’t want to rely on borrowing a skirt). One pair is mostly for plane rides - the navy ones. So comfy!

My trip is VERY short - ten days on the ground and we switch countries twice, to and from Thailand. (This is not how I wanted to do it but my husband insisted on both locations, and it’s his turn to decide our destination; this is all the time we have for this year.) Anyway, I planned for items I could wash at night in my room because I didn’t want to waste time dealing with laundry services. So I have some redundancy built in. That said I could switch out the light athletic pants for another pair of shorts.

I actually had a knee covering skirt I wanted to bring but I can’t actually find it - I think I packed it away accidentally for the season, but I did try looking for it there. So frustrating! But I’m not really eager to buy another one. I have a maxi skirt on hand that’s lightweight so maybe that will be more useful than a third pair of shorts?

Very food tip about cleanliness; I have some hand sanitizer. I’ll get some tissue packs.

Glad to see you’ve got some layers included as Siem Reap can get chilly in mornings at this time of year. Also handy to keep covered if you’re a person who attracts mosquitos. Best preparation for tropical rain is to be sure your items will dry fast, in other words, best to avoid denim or thick cotton. Enjoy!!!!

Maybe you have too many long pants? I had one pair plus one 3/4 pair, that was enough. You can get clothes washed for you very cheaply at a “laundry”- they wash and dry them for you and you pick them up hours later. We did that in 3 different towns. I have done it in Bali in the past too and imagine you could in Phuket. We were embarrassed by how cheap it was.

Small wipes and toilet paper/tissue, plus maybe a small bar of soap in a plastic bag, for your handbag. From recent experience! I got back on Sunday from 3 weeks in Vietnam. You often have to touch food with your hands without the ability to clean them well first. Cambodia’s toilets are said by my SIL who travelled to Siem Reap a few weeks ago to be even more primitive.
They did sometimes provide skirts to wear at temples if you were wearing shorts, and a light wrap is good for shoulders but I tried to have short sleeves rather than sleeveless. Have fun!

Christina-- I just returned on Saturday from those places, as well as Vietnam and Bangkok, and Singapore. In Phuket, we did a lot of water activities (I absolutely cannot recommend John Gray's Hong Starlight highly enough--- it was the highlight of the trip in many ways!) and in Siem Reap we went to many, many temples. You are right to prepare for extreme heat and humidity. Perhaps the item which I appreciated most was my sun hat---I don't like wearing one, but it was CRUCIAL in protecting my face and neck from the ever present sun. I also found that I preferred wearing a skirt to the temples, to be a little cooler. Another handy item to have is a bandana/hankie/scarf that you can wet down and use to clean your hands or neck or face. I am still doing my wash, but I'll check and see if there is anything else that you might benefit from that isn't on your list. I think you'll love these locales, and I wish you a safe easy journey, and quick acclimation to the time change and climate.

Thanks Bonnie and Rachylou! I’ll try to make sure some of my pictures include my outfits. I am mostly interested in surviving the heat and humidity after a few months without them... looking cute would be a nice side bonus!

Thanks, Sal! Need to figure out about sunscreen. I have bug spray with DEET in small sizes though.

notsaf - I have a packable hat that’s on my list, just forgot to mention it. I think dresses won’t me suitable for much of my daytime activity but I may still swap out the skirt and matching top. Most of my summer stuff is in storage aside from what I held aside for this, but I do have a lightweight purple maxi dress in the “may pack” list. ETA added find.

Looks great -- have a wonderful time! Fwiw, when I was in that part of the word, I wore lots of one-and-done dresses that fell away from the body like your black midi. (When it's hot and muggy, I'm not interested in having anything around my waist.) Not sure what the sun will be this time of year, but a packable sun hat was also key!

I think it looks really good, as long as it all fits in I think you have beach, hiking, temple and dinner options covered!! I like the colours.

Make sure your sunscreen is in your checked luggage not hand luggage or you have a small bottle.

Plasters, insect repellant and I think you are sorted.

Have a wonderful time!!

Hi everyone! I am missing Turkey Day and traveling on Wednesday to Southern Thailand (PHuket & environs) and Cambodia (Siem Reap for Angkor Wat). We won't be back in the country until Dec 8th.

It's going to be hot and humid and often rainy in Thailand. Cambodia will be even hotter but less wet. I need to pack for swimming/water stuff in general for one part of the trip, and exploring ancient ruins during the other (which includes a need for covered shoulders and needs at the temples).

Not shown - sarong/wrap, lightweight bag, sun hat, sleep items, unmentionables, socks, and a pullover and lightweight short puffer for the the plane (that I can pack away into a pouch if need be). The navy track pants are for the plane but are lightweight enough to wear on the ground too. I am pretty set on most of these items. So I'm just showing my list off since people like to see these. But any feedback is appreciated, especially if you've been to one of these places and I'm overlooking something major.

NB: I injured my foot the other night by dropping a knife on it - it didn't fall straight on to it, but the sharp side glanced off my foot and cut it. I had trouble putting weight on it at first, but it doesn't hurt now. I had it looked at, and infection is not a concern.

NB 2: Yes, "Holiday in Cambodia" keeps running through my head.

ETA -Made some changes. I switched out the two piece dress for a Maxi dress; switched out one pair of athletic pants for an extra pair of shorts and a skirt; added in a blouse I'd forgotten to put into the group but was already packed. Switched to some Birkies that work better with my injury.
