All great advice. For me, a denim jacket would not be warm enough, even this year which has been warmer than usual, for the evenings and near the ocean unless you are layering over a sweater and top (holy run-on sentence!). Monterey is pretty casual; if you go down to Carmel that can be fancy-pants, but still in a NorCal laid back way. I would bring a rain jacket or something that can keep you dry, just in case. Maybe an umbrella instead of a jacket, if you're not planning to be outside all the time.

Thanks, ladies! You are all giving me lots of useful advice. Layering sounds like the way to go…..

I think a leather jacket or trench plus a scarf (so your neck stays warm in the wind!) would be perfect. My hunch would be the denim jacket is not warm enough. Make sure the jacket can close up.

Last time I was in Monterey was in may during our honeymoon. Probably warmer than now but I definitely still needed the leather jacket at times. And I have frozen there in mid summer near the water! Lesson learned: always bring a jacket, closed toe shoes, and long pants just in case.

In theory this is the rainy season. In practice, there's this drought and there isn't much rain in the forecast this week. Regardless, the fog can be so thick that it feels just like rain.

I'm just north of Monterey. The weather has been beautiful but cool and it tends to be breezier down there. Denim jacket or leather moto would be great. I don't see rain in the forecast but you could bring a lightweight trench as well. I'd plan on wearing layers--so anything that you could layer over a lightweight sweater would be great.

I was in Monterey in December a couple years ago. It was very windy and even rained a bit. I ended up wearing a red trench (with a liner) over jeans and good walking shoes (with some sort of a thin layer underneath). I like ClaraT's advice - packable layers sound like a good idea.

Of course: comfy walking shoes and a warm (lightweight) topper. You are correct that Monterey weather is often similar to SF weather: warm sun, cold winds, sometimes cold damp. You are likely to be both too cold and too warm, maybe on the same block. The vibe is casual for sure and also touristy for sure!

Cashmere might work (but may not hold up to breezes); fleece is perfect (but can be frumpy); leather moto may also be perfect (if you can carry it without becoming annoyed). A sweater plus a thin (stuff-able) wind breaker might cut it. Of course it depends on what you do. For example, walking to the Monterey Bay Aquarium may be chilly, but inside is warm. Thus my emphasis on warm but easy-to-carry.

The beaches are beautiful and photogenic. Fleece is your best lightweight cozy option there.

Have fun!

My bff and I are flying out this Thursday night to visit a good friend of ours. My friend says it will probably be in the low 60s F and to bring only casual wear. She's single and likes to go out, though, so I'm guessing we might have some late nights.

Suggestions? I'm thinking my denim jacket, or maybe a leather moto. Both? Planning to pull things together tomorrow.
