a medium purse--- i like to take something that doesn't draw too much attention when traveling but is big enough for documents, sunglasses, water, ect. I do pack my laptop in a separate neoprene bag with shoulder strap that is more protective than a purse that also fits my chargers and a small camera and anything I need on a plane (except a change of clothes, ect)-- when I travel with a SLR camera that is my "personal item" and I can usually fit my wallet and meds, ect in my camera bag for plane travel. The laptop bag and or purse fit nicely in the bottom of a suitcase-- a more structured bag can always house clean shoes or socks and undies in a suitcase.

I pack my regular makeup, but keep it minimal (especially when traveling to hot regions or those where lots of makeup is not the norm because of conservative cultural leanings). I make sure to pack my regular skincare stuff as well since I'm acne prone and use a light prescription and want to have a moisturizer and good sunscreen on hand that I know won't make me break out.

No styling appliances-- but again I have fine straight hair and it air dries even in cold damp places within 15 minutes--- I don't use those things at home-- I might bring a travel dryer if I was wearing my hair short.

I usually pack enough for just over a week (although if I was going for 2 months and going to be checking baggage anyway I may pack for 2 weeks) I generally don't have more than 5-7 days worth of hot weather clothes anyway since it is my shortest season--- ones appropriate for the middle east would be a smaller capsule wardrobe for me-- even winter clothes I don't probably have enough to go more than 2 weeks without laundry. If I have a trip more than 10 days or so I HAVE to wash.

I try to pack 2 or 3 sets of workout clothes-- I have to wash after every wear, but like to have a pair that can be drying while one is being worn, or better yet one for each workout of the week (usually 3x for me) --- I typically only have 3-4 sets of workout clothes at home, sometimes more or less as well

Shoes--- usually shoes for the pool/showers/around the house as slippers and then several comfy walking pairs to switch between-- one closed toe for cold planes and transportation and AC, a sturdy or hiking pair, 1-2 sandals and maybe a fancy pair for going out (4 minimum (including flip flops) and 5-6 maximum, most of which fold up tiny (3 sandals))

one nicer but basic dress in case you get invited to somewhere somewhat fancy, but something that i could still dress down to wear to dinner or even walking around (I got a invitation to a ballet once while traveling, but didn't have a sheath or anything appropriate) i don't worry about really dressy things-- if something amazing came up unexpectedly i'd buy something! other than that i'd probably just make sure i have chunky costume type jewelery or scarves to dress up everyday clothes and enough things packed so i could wear clean things in the evenings/on dates if i'd been touring or sweating that day-- usually my daily stuff unless im hiking or at home is smart casual, which is what i wear for dates-- i might throw in a few extra blouses or skirts/dresses as options for dinner if it was a mostly tees and jeans trip

(a) one purse, big enough to fit my laptop in a pinch

(b) all the makeup I actually wear (not a lot) and all the skincare stuff I use regularly

(c) for somewhere hot, just a flat iron, if the voltage works

(d) I just finished packing for southern France - 3 dresses, two pairs of jeans, a pair of shorts, three jackets, three cardigans, and a bunch of tops

(e) 2 sets of exercise gear, to not have to do too much laundry

(f) for somewhere hot, three pairs of sandals and running shoes

(g) ?

(h) I can't remember the last time I went on a date that required something more formal than a summer dress and sandals

I studied Angie's packing list to Japan, as well as some YLFers' travel capsules, but I could really use some advice on what to pack. Last time I went, I took too little in terms of variety (jeans+t-shirts+1 skirt), but I don't want to take too much! I I'll be there for a few months in the summer. Since my last trip, my style has changed, in that I wear blouses and rarely t-shirts (time to give away t-shirts???).

I'd also like to use the opportunity to weed out clothes and shoes that I don't wear often enough to justify being in my closet. I'd *love* to have a tiny wardrobe where I treasure most pieces that is fashionable (despite foot/shoe problems) and that is easy to travel with! Moreover, I want to get out of the habit of "saving" my best pieces. If I have few garments, I'll be forced to wear the dressier.

So questions when you're traveling for a few months at a time when you are guaranteed sunny hot weather daily...(I'm not going to go into the politics of clothing, but let's just say that wear a long skirt in one city means one thing, and wearing it in another city means something else. You have to know where you're going in the morning and dress accordingly):

a) What size purse do you bring? Small, medium or large? And if small, do you also carry around a separate tote to carry your laptop/tech toys?
b) How much make-up/facial cleansers?
c) Do you bring a hair dryer/straightener/curling iron?
d) Do you pack a lot and wash little or pack a little and wash often?
e) Exercise gear--how many pants/sports bras/shirts?
f) Shoes--how many pairs?
g) When you're done packing, what do you remove?
h) What do you pack for dates?

Thanks!
