You sound prepared! I ended up buying poles in Norway and had no trouble bringing them home in carryon.

We had only a couple of sunny days so sunscreen and sunglasses were enough protection.

if you have one, consider adding a knit beanie/toque to your list. The need to shift layers rapidly when out hiking is real.

I came away enchanted by Norwegian sweaters and thought Rauma Collection women’s sweaters were particularly nice, fwiw.

Never been there but it sounds amazing!
Yes to crossover looking pieces though, and Athleta is great for that. Skorts if you have warmer days. Tops with texture- they read as less gear-ish to me. OTF or similar pants. Yes to another pair of shoes!

Joy, sorry to hear about your bad experiences in Italy (and other parts of the world?).

However, this thread is about a trip to Norway in Northern Europe. Please be aware that:
• The population in Norway is small and very scattered. Outside towns and cities (which are rather few and widespread) you will not be able to purchase an umbrella at every corner.
• In Norway, pharmacies sell medicines, usually not umbrellas. Instead, look for umbrellas at places where they sell clothes or sports equipment.
• Even on weekly travels by plane in Norway, I have never experienced x-ray problems with umbrellas in mine or others' hand luggage. Norwegians, including airport personnel, are very used to rain and umbrellas. But of course, this might be different in the country/airport you depart from when travelling to Norway.
• A hood is fine, as it will protect your head and hair against the rain. But the rest of you will inevitably get wet unless you are wearing a raincoat and rainpants.
• With good reasons, many Norwegians keep an umbrella at hand (in their bag or car) on days when rain is expected. Of course, whether you want to do as the locals is up to you.

You have great advice. After being pulled aside for extra luggage inspection because of the way an x-rayed umbrella looks, I buy one there if needed and abandon it when I leave In an open umbrella bin. I have not been searched like that since and umbrellas are very cheap.
It takes no time to pop into a pharmacy to get one. Some even put an umbrella display outside on a rainy day making it even easier. Sometimes an umbrella will funnel rain down your neck of into luggage, especially a backpack. Then a hood on your coat is the best solution. Rain in Venice ,Italy has been the worst wheeled luggage must be carried over canals as the wheels don't always work on steps. A back pack gets filled with rain running off the umbrella. I hope that you have better luck and no rain to deal with.

The Cat, thanks for that link - a very useful site!

Stagiaire Fash, hmm itineraries with free time, I seem to plan vacations with not enough of that. But I think there are a couple of spots of free time, and you're right, picking up an umbrella or another pair of shoes or a sweater would be a nice reminder of the trip too.

Hadilly, thanks for sharing your list; it's really helpful to see what you brought and what you used. Thanks for the suggestion on Dronningstien and Voss! I sometimes use hiking poles but I can't take them in carryon so will leave them at home this trip.

For gear I am bringing:
Mountain Hardwear Stretch Ozonic waterproof pants which I will wear over Athleta Rainier Leggings or Title Nine Clamber hiking pants for wet days, and a Mountain Hardwear Granite Glad rain jacket.
Altra Lone Peak waterproof hiking boots. Darn Tough hiking socks
some combination of icebreaker wool 150gm weight Tshirt (bringing 2 of these); icebreaker long sleeve wool 150gm shirt; 1/4 zip 200gm shirt; Arc'teryx Atom LT insulated vest; Arc'teryx Kyanite LT hoodie, merino hat & gloves;
for runs: Altra Escalante running shoes, 2 pair micro crew merino wool running socks, REI active pursuits shorts, Oiselle running shorts, long sleeve running shirt, tech fabric Tshirt, baseball cap
For other stuff:
swimsuit & Teva sandals
Athleta Stellar Skinny Trouser (older version of the current ones) or Brooklyn pants if they arrive in time and seem better - will wear these for the air travel days too.
Atoms sneakers, 2 pair thin merino crew socks; 1 pair micro wool socks
squishable flats
Breton 3/4 sleeve knit top, Elizabeth Suzann Georgia Tee, 2 tanks, Cos Tshirt, Athleta Urbanite dress
light scarf

still considering: whether to bring Athleta Pacifica long sleeve UPF shirt or button down REI long sleeve UPF shirt (right now the weather is not looking like I'm going to need a lot of sun protection...and I am bringing sunblock), jeans, a second scarf, whether to bring a thin down jacket or vest if I have the other layers. If I should bring a thin Vneck sweater or just use the 1/4 zip merino or the LS icebreaker with a scarf, or the vest. Maybe I just need one pair of shorts for running. Laundry is available on day 5, and most of this I could wash in a hotel sink, though it might take a day or two to dry.
Just did a test pack and everything other than the still considering stuff fits, with room for a few more items. So I could bring some of the considerations; I just keep thinking that people used to have much smaller wardrobes and go on much longer trips with far fewer things.

For purchases on the trip, I have a big uniqlo lightweight tote that folds up quite small that I am bringing in case I want to check a bag on the way back, in which case I can turn the tote into my carryon.

I went to Norway and hiked a ton in July. Here’s what I brought:

1 pair jeans
grey stretchy water resistant pants from REÍ, house brand
camo joggers (Costco, Spendid brand, highly recommend)
patagonia baggies
Black cropped Align leggings
grey/black wool sweater, close fitting
navy cashmere crew neck sweater
patagonia silent down parka
long and short sleeve crew neck t shirts
cashmere beanie
Salomon hiking boots
Brooks Adrenaline
Mephisto Helen sandals
Darn Tough wool socks, short crew and Balega runnings socks

Thoughts: I wish I had packed a brighter sweater, pink or green for summer. I never wore the shorts. My jeans ripped irreparably so I finished out the trip in the joggers. My shoes were great.

i had to buy a rain jacket there because my Patagonia jacket was old and didn’t stand up to the amount of rain. I bought one by the brand Blaest. Knee length, very well designed, and waterproof.

If you can, the Dronningstien hike in Lofthus is amazing. Park as close the trail start as you can.

On the day we did Trolltunga, I layered my Aligns under the rain pants and that worked well for comfort and warmth.

I wore my hat a lot when out hiking.

The jeans and cashmere were great for eating out. I didn’t bring anything dressier and it worked out.

Consider bringing hiking poles if you like to use them.

if you get a chance, go bike around Voss. So gorgeous.

This sounds like a great, active trip. If your itinerary includes any free time, that takes pressure off the packing, as you can use it to buy things you need, whether masks required by current regulations, jacket/umbrella required by the weather, or other necessities. You wouldn’t hang onto masks, but an article of clothing or an umbrella might be a good souvenir.

The Car, I had placed you in Finland, on the other side of Scandinavia, oops!

salt-sea, yes, it might sometimes be too windy for an umbrella, in particular if you are near the sea. However, many towns and villages are shielded behind tall mountains. The rain often comes quietly, but suddenly. For instance, in Bergen (the "capital" of Western Norway) many view an umbrella as a must. By the way, great selections of umbrellas and rainwear are available in shops in Bergen.

Thanks; more great tips.

Sarah, good idea about the laundry soap. I was planning to bring a single small scoop of laundry powder in a ziploc bag for the laundry at the midpoint hotel, which does have a laundry room & also a service. I've brought woolite packets before and could do that. I would like to find some of those laundry detergent sheets but haven't looked into it.

delurked, thanks! I was tempted by that skirt earlier this summer but didn't buy it. I've already ordered the brooklyn pant so don't want to place a second express shipping order, but I'll keep an eye on that skirt and if it gets discounted, it looks like a good travel option. Hopefully the Brooklyn pants will work as they will pack much smaller than jeans. The fabric of the Urbanite dress is the same as the old La Viva pant and I think that skirt. I also have the Presidio dress, and an Urbanite shirt, which is the same fabric. It's very travel friendly and very lightweight. The Urbanite dress is midi length on me (and I am on the tall side) and has bracelet length uncuffed sleeves that have a slit. They do roll or push up nicely. The fabric flows in a flattering way and I can envision taking this on everything from business trips to personal travel. I would wear it in the winter with a thin turtleneck and tights underneath also.

The Cat, good point about hand luggage; flats should fit into the side pocket of my backpack easily. I'll bring two scarves; a silk scarf takes up no real room and it will provide some variety. Is it not usually too windy for an umbrella? I'd heard it's too windy for umbrellas to be useful in the west of Norway; I've only ever brought them to Ireland. Thank you for your very relevant advice from Norway!

Thanks Joy; I am bringing some good KN95s and 3M Auras for the flights. I think I'm not able to travel quite as lightly as you describe on this trip due to the gear requirements alone, but good food for thought, and good aspiration for me. Completely agree on the strict color palette - a must - I am not at the level of packing genius to have varied colors AND efficiency AND suitability for varied weather! It will be mostly black with a little blue, teal and green.

Wear your.most heavy shoes on the plane and pack light weight ones if you can. My limit in a carry on is 2-3 pair shoes counting those I wear, two or three bottoms a tank and a sleeved shirt for each bottom plus at least on light hooded coat, a merino of or cashmere sweater, usually black and long underwear that doubles as pjs. I packed a dressier outfit for Ireland and never needed it. If you are used to shorts you may want to take a pair or pants you can roll up shorter. Forget long sleeves and rely on topper or two that you can layer with each other under your rain coat if needed. A scarf is a good idea. So are socks that can double as slippers. My rain coat is my robe. Don't forget heavy duty masks. Some European countries required them in June to enter the country. Have vax cards ready and with you. Stick strictly to a color pallet. Enjoy your trip. It sounds like fun in a beautiful place.

I am in Norway, and I think you are bringing enough gear and perhaps also enough outerwear, so I will primarily give my vote to:
- Pants that can be dressed up or down
- Nice pullovers/cardigans
- Nice flats. Packing tip: You might have room for them in your hand luggage.
- Scarves, at least two, for variety. Plus, scarves easily get wet in the rain, so you might often want to wear a dry one. Tip: Bring at least one silk scarf. Silk is surprisingly comfortable at any temperature and takes up very little space. Extra tip: If you feel very cold, wear silk closest to your neck, and then tie a warmer scarf around the silk scarf.
- Thin cotton socks (for temperatures in the 60s and above) and thin wool socks. Packing tip: Can be stored in your footwear.
- Thin woolen camisoles / tank tops / T-shirts. Comfortable in all sorts of Norwegian weather.
- A compact umbrella. You might not need to wear your raincoat every day. Hopefully, you will get several sunny days, or at least hours. However, in the western part of Norway you never know when it will start raining again, so it is wise to always bring an umbrella in your hand luggage.

Including the Brooklyn ankle pant finds that Sarah recommended above.

I haven't tried on the Athleta shirtdress, but I like the looks of it. I'm adding the find below for the Athleta skirt I got this summer that has been quite handy, and also packs down small and is good for travel. Do you have any feedback you could provide on the shirtdress? I enjoy gear style items that can work for travel for their easy packability.

I find the shoes to be this issue when I travel and want to fit it all in a carryon. The tevas should pack flat, which helps a lot. The jeans take a lot of space, and will definitely need to be worn on travel days, along with the hiking boots. Changing hotels often will make the jeans tricky to pack I think.

You might want to bring some travel laundry soap packets along to wash your running/hiking stuff along the way, unless you're certain about laundry opportunities. I did pretty extensive laundry in the hotel sinks on a trip to China (with my whole family) and it worked out quite well.

Another great tip - warm socks! Thanks rachylou. Will bring some thin and medium weight merino socks which will be good in a wide range. (and thicker ones for hiking certainly).

I really appreciate all these great tips! This is a long awaited trip - originally scheduled in 2020. Feeling very out of practice for packing!

Socks! Warm socks is my second thought after a puffer - I’d be cold in those temps. Sounds like a wonderful trip!

Texasgal, that your allbirds were the dressy option is reassuring; I am thinking my tevas if it's surprisingly warm, or the Atoms sneakers, or maybe black flats if I can squish them in. I'm drawing the line at my hiking boots, which I purchased purely on function and not form, sadly. Good point on the lightweight insulated jacket - I will consider my insulated vest vs a thin down jacket for layering - I should be ok with either though the insulated vest is a little easier to layer.

Stagiaire Fash - thank you; I will take a look. I seem to have both serious gear jackets and more dressy business casual stuff; not much of the in-between which would be more useful in this situation.

Sal, very good point about wide pants and rain. And to your point about jacket vs other additions - maybe if I bring my black waterproof jacket vs a brighter color one, a scarf will suffice to dress it up when going out in the evening.

JAileen - I remembered your post about your layers on your Aleutian trip! That definitely contributed to my bringing more wool. I think if it were going to be colder during more of the trip I'd be choosing boots as my additional shoe but I think I'll be too warm in them to wear them for other than hiking. I like Kuhl products; I'll see if they have them in stock at my local REI; I remember the jackets running a bit small when I tried them before.

So to round up my changes thus far:

definitely bringing a scarf

ordered a pair of Brooklyn pants to try; if those don't work I'll reacquaint myself with my skinny jeans. I have joggers too but feel like those don't dress up enough. I think I've only worn shorts, skorts or linen pants for the past three months.

bringing additional shoes; probably my black & white Atoms, and maybe also a pair of black flats; I'll try flats on with my Athleta dress and the winning pants and see if they are worth the extra volume

assess vest vs down jacket

assess additional sweater or topper vs additional outer jacket

Thank you! And more advice welcome!

In June I visited Dutch Harbor, in the Aleutian Islands, along with Anchorage and Homer. I took a Patagonia Nanopuff jacket, Nanopuff vest, fleece shirt, hoodie, long underwear, Goretex jacket and pants, and hat, gloves, neck gaiter. And I was very cold in Dutch Harbor due to dampness and wind. If I were to do it again, I would have taken a mid-weight down jacket, too.

I wore gear almost exclusively. I took a a Kuhl utility jacket, and wore it traveling, mostly, along with a nice looking striped top. I took only two pairs of shoes - Salomon hiking shoes and knee high neoprene boots. I wore the Salomons almost all of the time.

What an exciting trip!

My first thought was that will struggle to fit in carry on - four pairs of shoes plus jackets etc? But I like your list and unless you want to wear hiking gear to dinner and on city days I think it is realistic.I would want a pair of flat easy shoes for dinner and I do like the black shirt dress. The utility pants look good to me as an option - I love wide legs but they are bulkier and not good in the rain. Skinny jeans are fine too. I agree a warm scarf is great for the plane or colder days with a tee shirt. I would probably wear my raincoat over my casual clothes to dinner or in the city rather than take another coat, I'd be more likely to take an extra merino.

In my finds there are quite a few raincoats by Colombia or sold by Orvis. They’re from a year ago, so exactly those models won’t be available, but they are places I suggest you look.

I just got back from 16 days in Alaska with similar activities hiking kayaking hiking on glaciers etc. Layering was key. I had a lightweight Merino sweater that was very useful and a Patagonia nano puff jacket. I also had rain pants that I wore even when it was sunny out for warmth. I brought longjohns from Patagonia as well and found them very useful. You don’t really need dressy clothes. Most of the people in Alaska even in the fancier restaurants were pretty casual. I wore my hiking boots on the plane and packed a pair of black slip on sneakers from Allbirds for “dressy”. Be prepared for rapid weather changes so layering is key. Many days I was putting on and taking off jacket sweaters and rain pants several times as the weather changed. I did this all in carry-on. I did wash a few things out but after about 3 to 4 days your definition of clean changes dramatically lol. Also a lot of the lodges in Alaska and I would imagine Norway have a no shoes policy so make sure to bring socks with you everywhere you go. In the past we have traveled to Iceland in the summer and Norway in the winter and I bought the same things for those trips as well. Have a great time!

Thank you sarah! So helpful. I should definitely bring another jacket that is not my raincoat; I'll bring something that is a little water resistant at least and has room for a sweater under it, or perhaps my extremely packable uniqlo down vest. Great idea about the brooklyn pants; shocking that I don't own a pair already given how much other Athleta stuff I own. I will order a pair.

Are the black and white sneakers dressy enough - at least they aren't hiking boots or running shoes - for dinners? I do think I'll need the sneakers during the day but wondering if I should bring black flats now also.

Definitely will bring a scarf, good idea!

Wow, that sounds like an amazing trip.

Pants: I might suggest a pair of Athleta Brooklyn (or similar) pants that could work as gear or non-gear, and can be dressed up or down. I brought something similar on a trip to France (see Finds) and found they worked well with a Breton style top, sweaters, etc. Adding new finds isn't working for me at the moment, but you can find them here. They are so lightweight and don't take up any space and travel like a dream.

Sneakers: I definitely think you need another pair of shoes, and I like the idea of those black sneakers. I brought Eccos on one trip and Adidas on another and wore them all the time (see Finds).

Jacket: It can be cool in the fjords, so a jacket that you can wear with your dress/nicer outfit seems important. I brought lightweight trenches on both of my Europe trips and was very glad I did (see Finds). It doesn't seem that you have anything warm to wear on your non-hiking days, unless your raincoat can serve that purpose.

I would suggest bringing a nice scarf, which can add pizzazz, doesn't take up space, and even adds a little bit of warmth.

Have a great time!

hi! I'm packing for an outdoorsy trip to Western Norway. I found a few posts in the archives that were super helpful. I have a few gaps and questions if anyone's interested to offer an opinion. I don't have room for much beyond the things I have to bring.

Basics: Going for 11 days, spending the whole time in the fjord region in Western Norway. Renting a car and changing hotels often, though I will have an opportunity to do laundry at about the midpoint of the trip. I would like to go with carry on only.

Weather forecast: highs in 50s/60s/70, lows in 40s/50s. Showers likely many days. Current forecast period doesn't look very windy, but I've been watching the weather for a while now and I'm expecting will get some windier days.

Planned activities: We'll be hiking 4-5 of those days, and also have days including kayaking up on glacier lakes, doing a via ferrata route and a fjord RIB 'cruise'. Other days will be drives interspersed with scenic stops and walks, and exploring the villages we stop in. I'll go for runs on 4 of the less active days also. A couple of dinners planned at our hotels, rest to be determined.

So most of my clothing will be gear, including:

for the outdoor activities:
waterproof hiking boots - bulky. will have to wear on the flights
hiking pants & hiking leggings, both black
wool T shirt x2, wool LS T shirt, UPF LS shirt, wool midlayer LS shirt (will depend on conditions that day)
insulated vest, waterproof jacket and pants; hat, gloves

for the running:
running shoes
LS running shirt, tank top
shorts

For the other days:
Breton 3/4 sleeve knit shirt
black Cos T shirt
offwhite ES Georgia top
black tank

for spa/sauna/swimming:
swimsuit
plain black tevas

Main questions, though feel free to make other suggestions:

Thinking I need another pair of shoes for non-hiking/running time - maybe black & white tennis shoes? added as a find below. I have them in all black, black with white sole, and white. I'd like to bring the white but am afraid they would get dirty and look awful. Maybe I could wash & scotchguard them?

relatively dressy outfit for dinners: torn between bringing a black shirtdress (from Athleta, find posted below), which I would need to wear with the tevas or tennis shoes, or another pair black hiking pants with tennis shoes and a nicer shirt.

Should I bring another light jacket, like a denim jacket or a chore jacket? I suppose if it's rainy I could just wear my rain jacket over it.

whether to bring jeans or utility pants or ponte pants My wideleg jeans take up so much packing space, though they would be good for the flights I suppose; I'm a bit tired of skinny jeans right now and don't have any good straight leg ones. So maybe wideleg jeans or utility pants? Both shown as finds below. Or black Ponte pants, though they are thick they may be a little too legging-esque.

maybe a sweater or fleece that is non-gear?

Thanks in advance for any advice! After a hot and dry summer in the US northeast, it's hard to imagine myself in cool wet coastal conditions.

edited post trip
A few post trip reflections!
I ended up bringing the Athleta stellar pants as (despite choosing expedited shipping) the brooklyns didn’t arrive in time. I went with just the black rain jacket and my various warm layers to wear underneath. One scarf.
I ended up being really happy with the athleta stellar pants and my sneakers or flats along with my off white ES top, a wool long sleeve t, or my athleta urbanite dress for dinners.
I wore the Breton shirt only once and could have done without it. I ended up buying a pair of white leather sneakers in Bergen - not because I needed more shoes on the trip but because they fill a wardrobe hole and were a great price. I wore them a few times.
I never wore the scarf. I needed some combination of my warm layers on some of the hikes. Wore my rain jacket often and my rain pants twice.
Only wore my hiking leggings once, but I’d still bring them just to have them as an option. Most nights we had dinner at the hotels we were staying at, so outerwear with a dressy outfit wasn’t a need after all. Didn’t wear one tank top at all, as I wore one on the plane and had packed two others. Could have managed with one instead of three.
Used my swimsuit and tevas a lot - swimming in the fjords was amazing!
Could have used a second swimsuit but got by with one. Once I wore my dress as a coverup.
Wish I had another wool tshirt in a different color for the sake of variety - black and navy felt a little repetitive, but I was comfortable at least. I was able to do laundry at the halfway point and it was perfect.
Thank you all for the advice and suggestions - it helped with my final choices and made me confident in what I brought.
