Rachy, to be totally frank here, it's not just the leg coverage of pants for me. It's the waistband effect. I.e., not any skirt will do for traveling. The VC tube skirts work great because they have elastic forgiving waistbands.

I bloat horribly around the waist whenever I travel. It's not just more eating/drinking. It's also a factor of the airplane -- compounded by the heat & humidity. My feet bloat too - so shoes are the other factor. And the bloating doesn't go down for a day or two. This happens even when I travel to cooler /drier climates, but heat & humidity just make it worse.

Am I the only one? Is my body weird or what? Inquiring minds want to know!

I love the planned-v-actual. Excellent analysis.

You reinforce for me that I should not waiver from skirts when traveling in hot climes. I get tempted, thinking there could be pants occasions, but I shouldn't bother.

P.s. I really do NOT know how all of you living south of Mason-Dixon line manage to look so incredibly fab in the heat & humidity! It is such a major fashion shift for me to accommodate. Not that I'm complaining. The heat is nice and I'm sure if I moved I'd figure it all out. It's just a challenge when shopping & packing for travel, when you are so used to milder cooler climates!

I need to do this. I keep finding shoes i've forgotten about, a couple still unworn.

I did try with a closet planning app, but it was so tedious photographing, cropping, etc. I think i need to get rid of all my clothes and start over with the app. Yes, that's the plan. I just have to convince my husband it is labor saving.

Yes, Powerpoint. It takes some effort in the beginning, to collect all the images from the internet (especially for older items in your closet), remove backgrounds, crop, etc. I spent more than a few hours one weekend at the beginning of the year getting it all together.

It works best if you can find images of just the clothing item, not a model wearing it. So you might want to search for images that are similar, and not exact. For example in my PPT slide there, the skirt is not the exact VC ruched midi, but it's close enough.

That said, if your WIW photos are taken with bright light on a white background, you can remove background and these will work too. Unfortunately our house is dark and my camera is lousy, so this only works with a handful of my WiW's.

Now I have it down to a system -- every time I buy something, I make sure I save the image into a folder for later. Having it all in a PPT deck makes it really easy to plan out capsules & what to pack, and also to see what is missing, what could be added to pull it all together. And to evaluate potential new purchases!

Bonus pic for you - here was my core Spring '14 wardrobe, in a single slide...

It's crazy hot and humid in the summer where I live. I find that the most comfortable and flattering options are woven cotton dresses. They don't show sweat or cling like knits can, and they always look polished.

I have two versions of this dress, one from this year and one from a previous year. Both are great for hot, humid weather and have the required coverage you mentioned.
http://www.garnethill.com/esse.....ion/348950

lisap, I got that idea from someone else here, sorry I forget who, otherwise I'd give full credit and link to her original thread.

I just use PPT. I collect pics online of clothes I buy, or pics reminiscent of clothes that are no longer for sale anywhere, drag and drop on to a PPT slide, do a "remove background" on the image, and resize. Then when I want to share, I just do a command+shift+4 (on the mac) to make a screen shot.

An interesting thread for those of us travelling right now. Packing is always a challenge! I don't have anything to add to the clothing suggestions, but I do have a technical question . How did you set up that page with your clothing picks? It looks like such a great tool for planning outfits - even to refer to while one is already at the destination. Is it an app , or a page you found?

Thanks in advance if you can share how you did this:)

I'm bringing the white jeans for the meetings. I have a cardigan to cover up the sleeveless top, and I am bringing the elbow-length scoop neck tee shirt as an alternative to sleeveless if needed, plus the scarf -- should be plenty warm. The dresses would be for the outdoor/non-AC portions only. Will also bring a denim jacket, though I did not need it on my most recent, similar trip.

BJ1111 - on my last trip synthetic was fine for indoors/AC, but I actually wound up with heat rash on my torso, from clinging, sweaty, unbreathable synthetic worn outside.

I don't mind baring my arms around my coworkers, provided the armholes are cut high enough, and the neckline is modest. My arms are not my best feature (jiggly wiggly squishy) but I've long gotten over that. Especially because I'm so much more comfortable (outdoors in the heat) in sleeveless, what with fluctuating hormones & hot flashes.

unfrumped, my nicest cotton maxi at the moment is a LOFT one, that has a cut-out back. If it wasn't for the cut-out back, I'd bring that with me. My other maxis are showing too much wear and have been resigned to beach cover-up status. This is what I hate about cotton/knit garments. They just do not last very long and need constant replenishment. Not to mention, they do not provide much structure. Even these two VC tube skirts are probably not going to last more than one summer, unfortunately. I've been wearing both to death.

Usually my summer capsule is my smallest capsule -- I don't go overboard with it and only buy a few new pieces to replenish, and resign older pieces to beach wear. But if I continue in this present job /traveling as I'm doing, I'm going to have to plan next year for a larger capsule. Lesson learned!

It's too late now since the stores are picked over but next year I'm going to try and add some linen pieces -- tunic dress, a jacket, dress slacks, a top/blouse or two. Having those items in my closet would make this exercise so much easier.

I did get the AT dress even though on me the skirt fit was pushing the envelope as in all AT dresses ( top & bottom size disparity of a pear). I would actually freeze in conference rooms in it alone, though. For reference I wore a slightly pointy flat with mine, which helped for 6+ hors and some dancing, though most people would have worn heels.
To align with the guys' crazy dress code I like the tube skirt, or a breezier swingy skirt, or a maxi with sandals. Or, you say Bermuda's don't get you, but what about the culottes or silky- long- shorts styles? Or do they have the same issues?

I totally get your knee comment...i have (very briefly) considered knee lipo.

Back to your question, those sleeveless tops would make me feel too bare especially if there are few women (so few that no recommendations could be bothered to be made). Do you have a cotton sweater as a topper? Even just to fling over the shoulders.

If you have time, tunic dresses in a natural fabric would be ideal. I am very wary of any synthetic especially in sticky weather. I perspire and clothes stick and i get uncomfortable and cranky which is never fab.

I like the blush bag.

I'd take the brown bag and definitely the thongs. I personally prefer skirts in hot weather, so I think one pants is good enough. I'd take a jacket because of the a/c.

Rambling Ann- great advice! I hadn't even considered mosquitos.

Suz & Sveta - I tend to think shorter length works better with flats and reads more casual that way. I am just... so not happy with my knees these days. That sounds weird I suppose. I will likely get over it sometime soon (maybe this trip?), and realize nobody else views my knees the way I do. I just look at my knees and see my age.

First it was my neck (age 30).. then my elbows (age 40). I got over both of those. NOW it is my friggin' knees!!!!!! (Turning 49 tomorrow).

Well, it's pretty hot and humid here in Atlanta. If the the outdoor team events were here, I would definitely wear cropped/ankle pants and a sleeveless blouse or nice tee. Flat sandals because we also have plenty of wet, soppy ground. A casual sleeveless sheath could also work well with flat sandals. I'm not sure if any if that would be stuff you could wear during the rest of your trip as well.

Yes - pack the cotton dress just in case. It will fold up into nothing and you could use it if you end up getting too hot one day for a change up -- plus the slightly shorter length might read as more casual.

Sveta, in the "other" category I added the black sleeveless top with exactly that in mind, it could pair with the black ruched VC midi. Though road testing, the AT dress is probably cooler, overall.

You reminded me I also have this cotton LOFT dress... which has a high enough neckline it's business appropriate. It fits me well (similar to the pic here) but I've embraced midis and maxis so much, I haven't worn this because the length seems too short (length in the pic below is very accurate to how it hits me on the leg).

Pack this???

If I do, how does that effect the choice of bags? Seems to want to lean more towards the blush or cognac, no?

Tracey - the lighter bag is blush pink -- see my WIWs to get a better sense of the color, as the pic here does not do it justice. I do love it and have been sporting it since spring. However I may be getting weary of it, hence why I am considering cobalt or cognac instead, for a change-up. The cobalt bag has lots of convenient pockets, as does the cognac/pink Coach bag, but to my eye seems slightly more casual, which might strike the right note for this trip. I just want to bring ONE bag for this.

This travel capsule does have blue in it, perhaps your computer isn't reading it? The balloon top day 1 is an ink blue. The AT dress for day 2 is navy. The graphic print top for day 3 is ink blue & white (the ink dark enough that in the BR dressing room, I thought it was black- it was only in light of day I realized it wasn't!).

Re: lower heeled shoes -- the wedge heels I have shown here are uber comfortable 12 hour shoes for me. They've proved their muster on business trip after business trip, on my feet all day long, running through airports, feet swelling on airplanes, standing all day at conferences, etc, etc etc. But yes, I will be bringing flats as well. A pair of Jcrew gold thongs like this -- https://www.jcrew.com/womens_c...../08890.jsp, and my Naot Lena's like this http://www.zappos.com/naot-foo.....mer-nubuck. To my eye (and already road-tested) the Naot's work with everything *but* the AT dress.

My Naot's have a subtle hint of cobalt blue to them in the straps, which inspired me to consider my cobalt bag. It's just it has silver hardware, not gold?

*possibly over-thinking this*

I am a spanner on the bag but I like blush - I think it works beautifully with all your clothing options (but I am on pastels kick lately..) and taking a small clutch is a good idea.
I like all your clothing options. If you are afraid the dress may be too hot maybe you can take another breezy top to pair with one of the skirts for the evening - just in case?

Donna, I'd look like a house ensconced in an exterminator tent in Angie's recent outfit. I do not have the long graceful neck to pull it off, nor the height.

That said I do have some loose / breezy / waist surrendering dresses that achieve the same goal, but are in fall colors/ fabrications, which don't seem right for this.

OMG. I would love to move south but this is quite the fashion challenge! Then again, if I did move, I'd have an easier time finding options at the local mall! I rarely see linen options here, especially in petites.

I rally prefer the cognac bag over the bright blue. It is more neutral, and the rest of your selections don't have any blue as far as I can tell. The lighter bag doesn't give enough contrast, on the other hand.

I live in a hot, humid climate and your selections seem spot on. I was going to suggest a more structured jacket for the future but I see you have a white one listed, as well as the black cardigan.

Would you consider a pair of lower-heeled sandals/shoes for the outdoor evening festivities? Maybe even nice sneakers if you will be crossing a lot of grass. If there are afternoon showers the outdoors may be very wet.

Do you have anything loose and breezy or like the dresses Angie recently featured? For muggy weather, I prefer to be more covered up. Plus, looseness accommodates weight fluctuations!

I am cobalt biased, but a bright bag will be less likely to be misplaced.

Your agenda sounds challenging. I don't know that I'd really want to see colleagues in shorts, Ts, and flip-flops; seeing DD and her friends (and of course DH) dressed as such is sufficient.

Thanks Suz!

Unfortunately I look horrid in Bermudas. I have some white dressy cotton cargo capris but I've gained just enough weight that I fret and futz over them right now. They are in my drawer and many times I've attempted to wear them but something wasn't quite right. I.e., they fit better last summer. I gain weight last in my lower body, so this is a plus/minus situation: I believe I have had better luck overall with jeans and pants *because* I gained a few pounds. So I'm not complaining, necessarily...

But there's no time to shop, and even if there was time, I'm finding stores are very picked over for summer stuff. Summer is so short here.

Caro/Suz -- you don't think the cobalt bag is too much blue? Also it has silver hardware; the other bags have gold hardware.

Totally love these options. All of them. I vote either cobalt or cognac for the bag, depending on trip timing -- if next week, cobalt, if into fall, cognac.

Take the AT dress. It's gorgeous. I think Unfrumped was considering it / bought it and it was fabulous on her (though she is a pear). I fell in love with it instantly. In the air con (or in the evening) it should be fine.

I might add a clutch as well for evenings. It's easy to carry and pack. Can go inside the tote if need be.

I might also add bermuda shorts in white. I find them a really useful item. Or maybe some "sarong" style shorts like the ones I got from Zara. Can dress up or down. Easy to wear.

Update:

Here's what I actually wore... pic 2...

Day 1 - swapped tops last minute before leaving for the airport. Not sure why -- we'll just say it's because I am a mood dresser. Arrived to destination & it was so hot & muggy, I just had to change into something sleeveless and with shorter hemline. Yes I changed from cotton short sleeves to sleeveless, and a cotton midi-length skirt to one above the knee. That tweak made all the difference in terms of comfort in the heat.

Day 2 - even though we were going to be in an AC conference room all day, jeans just felt unbearably heavy, no matter how rolled. So I chose the other VC ruched midi instead, which worked best with the geo pattern BR sleeveless blouse. I did not even need the cardigan. Though I could, and many did, I did not bother to change for the evening festivities as I felt just perfect in this outfit, for the weather and the occasion.

Day 3 - I tried the jeans again, with this top. Still wasn't feeling it. The heat. So I recycled the striped tube skirt again to wear home. It's so comfy for traveling, like traveling in sweat pants. Unfortunately, it's already starting to pill. At last minute I added the Naot Lena flats, simply because there was room for them, so I chose to wear them home. I did need the cardigan, when I arrived back home, because it was chilly here.

Handbag: night before the trip, I polled DH on which bag I should bring. He voted for the blush Coach. I was glad to have someone break the tie for me!

Luggage: 22-inch spinner, international size. I put my laptop inside the carry on pocket. Everything fit in this bag, but in retrospect (looking what I actually wore), I still totally over-packed. But, I am glad I brought options, and the luggage was not unmanageably heavy.

Original post:

I don't want to list specifics due to privacy etc, but my next trip is for business, to a hot & humid climate, dress code is challenging... one day will be business casual (I expect frigid AC meeting room). The rest of the time will be spent outdoors (team dinners) in hot & humid weather. The men are told to wear shorts and tee shirts and flip flops. The few women that will be attending are left to figure it all out for themselves...

I'm from Boston, where summers are so much milder, so I have a limited amount of options for hot/sticky weather, most of what I have is for my weekends, not for hanging out with colleagues. I.e., I am not about to go baring too much skin around my coworkers, or my cotton/breathable options are getting threadbare / don't fit (did I mention I've gained weight this year since starting this new job?).

Here's what I have. Does this work? What would you add or subtract?

Note for travel days, I will be traveling with colleagues, and it involves airplane + 2 hour car ride.

What would you put on the list to buy before next summer/ packing challenge rolls around?

Note I have bathing suit on there, because we were told to bring one.... but 99% sure I won't be crawling into a bathing suit in front of my work mates anytime soon.

The dress -- I love it. Final sale AT. It's so comfy and flattering. BUT it is synthetic, so I am dubious. I did a test run in it last night, it was perfect for my local clime in the evening. It may be too hot for more southern climes, but all my other options don't fit or are threadbare or are not business appropriate.

I am not bringing all three of those handbags, just one. Which one SHOULD I bring? Can't decide. Pink, cognac, or cobalt? Just one...
