Maybe I'll research brands before getting there...

ChrisM, the ones pictured above are Sorel (Find below in a different color). But now I might actually bring a different one as the Sorels don't quite fit me right. I will likely bring Vessi sneakers (shown in photo) also waterproof.

Once I go through a few rainy days I'll report back on how well they work!

K.M., YES. The nude hose is very sheer and not at all noticeable. It's signature to Japanese women's style. Japan has the BEST hose!

Sounds like a wonderful trip and you are set with your items. The only thing I would suggest is a very lightweight packable down jacket. Uniqlo has them and they are warm but think and you could use as a third layer if it is cold.
Have fun!

Christina F., when I told my husband that I didn't want to stand out for being a slob, he said--I'll stand out anyway with my curly hair and pale skin!

While I do care about etiquette as a matter of courtesy and kindness (we're bringing gifts according to tradition, business cards held the right way etc.), I don't mind if I don't win a fashion award during my trip... Of course I like to look good, but I also prize comfort (learned from experience after bleeding feet in a trip to Europe) and the need to pack light.

I suppose it I start to feel bad I can always shop, as many of you above suggested! Although I want most of my luggage on the way back to be filled with food & design stuff...

I don't think you need to raise your level of dress on a day to day basis, though it sounds like you may want to add to your dressy capsule for the trip a bit.

In my experience as a New Yorker, visitors stand out no matter how they're dressed, due to myriad things that wouldn't be noticeable unless you live here. I live near two hostels, so I know. You can't blend in.

So I wouldn't worry about wearing hose or anything like that unless you won't be comfortable with everyone being more dressed up than you. It's valid to take your psychological comfort level into account, of course!

Otherwise, I think you will be fine as long as you are neat and presentable. People's mileage varies on this, and this is just my take on it. I know others will disagree. For me, I'd only worry about it when going out in the evening, which is why I suggest adding a bit to the dressy capsule.

karen13, I am hoping my jet lag will allow me to wake up early enough to go to the fish market!

Jessikams, mmm, now I'm thinking my clothes might be too casual?... It's just so hard because I'm trying to pack for comfort (with finicky feet, this means sneakers); to pack lightly; and to pack for heat and rain. I find it so hard to dress up under these conditions--or maybe I just haven't found the right pieces?

Angie, oh, they wear nude hose even in Spring? I did try the nude legs/nude hose look inspired by the British Royal Family dress codes, and while I liked that it kept me warm in a chilly Spring day, I wonder what it feels like if it gets warmer. In any case I am bringing my compression stockings (wearing them in the flight), though they are much more conspicuous than sheer nude hose...

Joy, now I really think I should add a few dressier pieces!!! Thanks for the transportation tips and I am staying at a ryoken with an onsen, so I'm glad I have no tattoos (nothing against them! Just glad I can go to the onsen). I'm so looking forward to the traditional Japanese breakfast! (And also to a Konbini breakfast at some point )

Enjoy your trip. As Jessikams said, error on the side of formal. I did not take enough dressy items. If you think you may be out late, find out when the trains stop running for the day. Out in the countryside they stop even earlier. We ended up having to take a packed bus when we missed the last train to get back to Tokyo. Do not even try to go to an onson ( spa) if you have a tattoo anywhere. They are not allowed.
Do the Japanese breakfast if offered at the hotel. It will stay with you longer than an American breakfast does. Practice your chop stick skills.

FUN. I love Japan.

People are dressy, stylish and fashionable in Japan! Lots of classic, and VERY funky too. Make sure you feel fabulous in your outfits. Almost every women wears nude hose - with the shortest short shorts too.

Excited for you! I lived in japan for 3 years in my 20s and just loved it. In general, err on the side of formal—- Japanese people tend to dress very well. The good thing is you can certainly shop while there. Muji! Uniqlo! Have fun.

I was Tokyo for a week last June (late June) and it was crazy hot and humid and rainy. It was before the insane heatwave but I still almost died. I ended up wearing a maxi skirt I use as a swim coverup. It was a much dressier city than I am used to.

I found Tokyo to be an amazing city for walking - so safe feelingeverywhere even late at night. MAny highlights including aTokyo Swallows baseball game (the Ballpark experience is uniquely Japanese), the kabuki theatre (we did the short version), and the world freshest sushi at a little hole 8n the wall at the Tokyo Fish Market. A very cool museum which I will ask DH for the name of. Akihibara - the consumer electronics area was DH’s dream come true.

And we stayed in the Ginza so.... shopping!

I forgot too! I packed like you did, but I went to some mountainous areas and froze. It even snowed on a few days! Rookie mistake.

That sounds like a great trip! I haven't been to Hiroshima or Kanazawa, but it sounds like what you have should be pretty ok. Hiroshima should be quite warm and Kanazawa also mild. I do think you would get some sea breezes though so might be worth factoring in?

It's hard to know what to tell you. I think you are in for a treat! I personally found Japan to be one of the easiest places I've travelled - people speak less English, but they are so polite and helpful, and good at communicating across the language barriers. I cannot wait to go back.

Some of the famous temples and sights in Kyoto (Kinkakuji, Kiyomizudera, the tori steps you see in all the pictures) in get crazy busy, and I mean really crazy busy. If crowds bother you I would highly recommend researching quiet times. The other thing about Kyoto is that there are an endless number of amazing temples and gardens, so don't feel like you have to go to the most famous ones just because it's what everyone else does. You might even have a better experience going to places a bit more off the beaten track.

I hope you have a wonderful trip :)

Yay Japan! You are in for an awesome trip!

For 1) - sounds like you are already well covered on the top front. I think if I was going to add to what you have, I would probably include a warmer top or jacket for nighttime.

For 2) Do you mind if I ask what parts of Japan you are travelling to? I got back from a trip there about this time last year - what you are packing would probably be fine for Kyoto/Tokyo/Osaka, but if you are heading anywhere mountainous or to Hokkaido, I would recommend bringing something warmer. Conversely, you might want some sandals if you are travelling to Okinawa or Kyushu.

I'm packing for two weeks in Japan and could use feedback. I'm leaving in a week, so I'm planning for temperatures around the 70s during the day, with occasional hotter or cooler days, and rain. I'll mostly be sightseeing during the day, and only need one dressier outfit. Trying to pack as lightly as possible, and planning on doing laundry a few times.

My questions are:

1) Do I need more tops (tees and shirts)? If so, should they be tank tops or short-sleeved tops?

2) Will sweaters suffice? I do not own a good summer-weight topper.
