Hi Meredith~ Your trip sounds fabulous! I adore Italy! I wouldn't wear jeans on the plane, way too constricting, try some looser flowing pants, Chicos has these fabulous "travel pants", wrinkle free wear with anything! I also would not wear tall boots on the plane either. You want comfy shoes to slip off on the plane if you want!

Bon Voyage! Don't forget to take a pkg of face wipes for quick makeup and sweat removal and hand sanitizer! I find a nice backpack is my choice of handbag for traveling, then packing a couple cross body bags in my luggage. Have fun! Hope you come back with a fabulous pair of leather shoes or a jacket from Italy~

looks like you're already back! Hope you had an amazing time! What did you buy?

Thank you Meredith! I found this very helpful as I really need to get going on packing for Rome and London as my mom and I are leaving on Sunday. I'm going carry-on only as well so I can help my mom with her bag so it's good to see how much you were able to fit in.

I’m back from Italy and wanted to do a follow up post because I believe a few others are headed that direction soon. I was very happy with what I packed!

Questions about shoes and outwear seem to be common, so I will focus there.

First, shoes. Fashion sneakers and flat booties reigned supreme. I saw sneakers in all colors, but black/dark were the most common. Also saw a fair amount of loafers, but only in Florence. Very few people wore tall boots (although I saw them displayed in shop windows and wore them myself). We walked over 9 miles most days, so comfortable shoes were important.

Outerwear. The ubiquitous puffer was everywhere on everybody. It knows no bounds of age, gender, or nationality this year. In the smaller towns in Tuscany I’d say 95% of people (including locals and Italian tourists) were in puffers. It was actually pretty amusing to observe. But they really are so practical and comfortable in a variety of temps plus can be easily stashed away. The puffer was still common (but less so) in Florence and Rome where there were plenty of wool coats and parkas.

Weather: In Florence my light wool coat was sufficient most days, although sometimes I used the puffer at night. I did not need a hat, but I did use my thick cashmere scarf/wrap more than I had planned. In Rome I took the puffer most days because I wanted a layer for the cool morning that I could pack away when it was warm enough to get by with a sweater. I also used my lighter weight scarves.

I didn’t get many full-body photos but I’m including one here. Unfortunately it’s a pretty basic outfit, but it gives you an idea of what worked for highs of 65 degrees in Rome. I wore my puffer for the first hour of the morning, then stashed in my bag until it started getting dark.

Happy travels everyone!

Meredith,

I'm going to be in Florence in a couple weeks, too, (and Venice, which will probably be even cooler) and am quite interested in the weather. Please let us know how the wardrobe performs in the cold. Your capsule looks well curated and your pieces will definitely elevate your style (far) above the average tourist! Are you planning a dinner in a nice restaurant while you are there?

Like you, I'm a carry on only gal; I will be trying to get away with as little clothing as possible. In my bag, not on my body

Thanks, Sisi! I actually walked out my door last night and had the same thought about the puffer and hat. I’m Undecided about which shoes I will wear on the plane. I think it will come down to wearing the ones that don’t fit in my luggage!

Kkards: I guess I just have uncomfortable knit pants. They actually feel more restricting around my waist than jeans. I will test my outfit before I wear it to make sure it feels comfortable enough.

Shevia: We’ll be in Florence and Rome. Florence will have lows in 30s and 40s, so the puffer is appropriate, but maybe overkill in addition to the wool.

Good luck with jeans on the plane. That’s one part of her packing lists that always make me scratch my head, especially as her jeans are apparently not the stretchy kind.

You know I like your palette; the colors here could’ve come out of the picture you posted on my post. I’m glad to see you put them to such good use

Good thought Aida (and nice to see you). I will see if I can squeeze in an adding a indoor topper although it’s not a “must” for me. The puffer actually has sleeves, so I won’t wear it indoors.

How handy to be able to adapt Angie's packing list! I'm impressed you got all those coats in there. Nice mix of pant hemlines, should help keep things feeling fresh especially with the sweater dress to mix things up. If you don't like to be cold I am a little surprised to see no jackets/toppers, unless you don't generally wear them of course.
Will you be wearing the puffer vest as a jacket indoors if needed?

Packing for an upcoming trip to Italy has been a surprisingly easy task. The weather will be identical to what we’ve had locally, so no second-guessing the required warmth. Plus, Angie just posted her own travel capsule that was obviously very carefully considered. So I copied her to the extent my small wardrobe would allow. I wish I could have included more punchy colors, but I worked with what I had.

The lighting in the photo is poor, but the items are mostly black, gray, burgundy, blue, and pink.

I am a strictly carry-on girl (personal preference) and I managed to fit:

Dressy booties
Sneakers
2 scarves
1 hat
Trench coat
Wool coat
Puffer
4 knit tops
1 velvet top
1 sweater dress
4 pairs of pants (2 skinny, 1 cropped, 1 straight leg)
Crossbody bag

On the plane (round trip, because Angie says it’s ok ):
Boyfriend jeans
Black sweater
Cashmere wrap
Tall boots

I know the puffer and hat are overkill, but I do NOT like to be cold.

Thanks Angie! You are a packing wizard! And a photo wizard.
