Wow what a comprehensive summary - thanks Shiny and Therese (and of course Angie)!!! I'll be backpacking around so I'll need to limit my luggage. Also I'll need a decent amount of gear, so I dont think I will be *anywhere* near as stylish as Shiny!!! This has inspired me to bring some nicer stuff than I would have otherwise though!!!

To Angie's warning of the frigid temperatures inside, I can only say yes, yes, yes! I had to run downtown this morning on a short errand with only a light cotton scarf and I was shivering as I passed through several of the main buildings to get to my destination. Wished I hadn't left my sweater in the office.

The harbour cruise will have some opportunity to sit outside (as do the short-journey ferries, e.g. the Star Ferry from Central, HK Island to Tsim Sha Tsui [and back]), but it also has air conditioned areas. It is windy on the harbour at night, but it is a balmy wind -- honestly, a light jacket + scarf should suffice. (But perhaps you can tell that I'm overly fond of scarves, so a jacket alone should be enough. My impression is that generally people do not dress up for the harbour cruises (as many are tourists and simply taking the harbour cruise at the end of the day), but you'll find all types. HKers generally go by their own drum -- those who dress up will dress up all the time, and those who don't, don't. A friend of mine, formally a member of the Legislative Council, is notorious amongst our circle for not dressing up for anything. At a black tie affair, she'll be found in her casual, billowy blouse and trousers, with tennis shoes while her contemporaries will be dressed to the nines.

I also agree with either leaving room in your luggage or simply purchasing new luggage here (it's quite affordable). We just hosted some Japanese friends this past weekend and they left with a new valise full of goodies. (HK is regarded as a great place for shopping in Japan; I think that I was dragged to the Lane Crawford outlet three times over the past week....)

I think that your schedule should be quite suited to here. Hong Kong isn't an early city. Restaurants serve breakfast until almost 12, and many shops will not open until 11/12. For the evening, in the major areas shops generally close between 10/11, and restaurants between 11/12. And of course some stay open quite late... :)

Also, and I'm pretty sure that Angie's mentioned this before -- some people go *crazy* at night! I'm not one for doing much dressing up at night (especially now that I live so far from HK Island), but there are some who go all out.

And I love those Ann Taylor tops (esp the silk georgette flower one); they look perfect for the weather then!

Yay, I'm another person who doesn't pack light. It is worth lugging around my 38lb suitcase (my husband can get the limit of 50 in his before it's full so he graciously carries my toiletries) so I'm not caught with nothing to wear. I like options!

You summarized our conversation perfectly Shiny! I’m impressed.

Yeah, you'll need a jacket for the cruise – but nothing too heavy. I wore one of my lightweight biker jackets.

I can’t stress enough how FREEZING the a/c is inside. Much colder than here in the States.

I do not believe in packing light, so pack enough to change again at night – and dressier of course. You feel gross wearing dirty clothes for 14 hours after walking around in a dirty city all day. But leave room to bring back gems. Take and empty piece of hand luggage. That’s what I usually do.

Therese - thanks so much! Very helpful advice, particularly the tip about the denim jackets. Sounds like cardigan/scarf for day is best (can throw into bag and carry easier than a jacket) and perhaps a smart blazer for night.

Angie and/or Therese- thought of another question: if we do a harbor cruise at night, what to wear? I'm assuming you want to dress for wind chill. But do people dress up for these cruises?

Tam - to summarize:

1) Pack your nicest clothes. When in doubt, dress up.

2) Weather: will probably seem hot to me. But it will be freezing indoors. Not all that sunny because the buildings are tall (this is like Boston or NYC).

3) Smart casual for day: dark denim jeans, nice sleeveless dressy blouse (sweet pea tops ideal because they can be washed), your best bag, and a cardigan because it's cold inside. Angie was comfortable in long jeans in October. Pack clamdiggers and day dresses only if you tend to run hot (which I do, so I probably will).

For blouses, this weekend (with HK in mind) I bought these two, which I figured were perfect:
http://www.anntaylor.com/catal.....pe=Regular

http://www.anntaylor.com/catal.....pe=Regular

So my plan is to wear silky, dressy blouses in fall colors.

4) Comfy walking shoes! Plan your wardrobe from the feet up! You will do more walking in HK than in NYC.

Will be on your feet all day. I'm packing my silver and bronze Me-Too's, as I can and have walked all over the city for an entire day, day after day, in these.

Boots: more of a personal thing. I tend to run hot, so I think this will be too hot for me - though I suspect the new Star Ling's would be comfy enough for tons of walking.

Cons: good option if you like them. I feel too dressed down in them, so I'm not bringing them.

5) Pull out all the stops at night. A dress with a jacket, heels, a clutch etc. Men should dress smart too.

However, I am thinking that it is quite likely DH and I will do our usual schedule, which is leave hotel late in the morning, and stay out all day long, not coming back to hotel until late. This is what happened in Paris, even though I brought along a nice dress and heels - never wore either. We just kept going and going. Or on the nights we did wind back at our apartment near dinner hour, we were too tired to do much more than hit one of the three local restaurants on our street for a casual and relaxing dinner.

However, I will still bring one really nice outfit for a special dinner out, just in case. I'm thinking LBD and Paris jacket, with heels. In event we manage more than one nice night out, I will be covered because I can easily change up the LBD accessories and/or pop the Paris jacket over jeans and a nice blouse.

Honestly? With some creativity, I could probably wear that LBD five days in a row, dressed up or down day and night! And it is a material that would be easily hand-washed and dried overnight. Not that I'm going to do that, but I'm just saying it could be done.

I will probably also throw in a black pencil skirt.

6) Pack to the limit of your luggage allowance. You don't want to be caught regretting not bringing something hanging back home in your closet.

- I'm assuming it's a good idea to throw in clams and a dress or two for warmer days?
Clams are clam diggers, correct? Cropped trousers are worn throughout the year here (cropped wool trousers+boots is a popular look in "winter", or has been for the past two or three years).

I got the impression even if it's warm, people will be dressing in fall colors?
Yes, because our offices are freezing. People will probably mostly be dressing in black, blues, and browns, as always. Fall colors are usually used more as accents in fall here, though you'll certainly see people wearing sweaters in fall colors (and, yes, sweating the entire way).

What jacket would you take - white denim, blue denim, or one of my pleather jackets?
White does seem pretty summery. HK is generally about dark colors (even in the summer) -- blacks, blues, etc. I don't see many denim jackets around here (seems too casual), nor much denim other than bottoms.

Along same lines, is my optical white bag okay?
Sure, why not? Black is still the color one sees most for bags here, but that's the same as anywhere else....

Sandals:
Sandals are worn here constantly until it gets cool, but flats and pumps begin to be brought out in September, when offices remove their "casual summer" clothing -- even though it's hot well into November at times!

new scrunchy boots:
People are wearing boots even right now.

Heels:
People wear them for hours. It's insane.

One thing that you should definitely not forget is either a scarf or cardigan. I prefer scarves, as I find them more versatile. A jacket seems unnecessarily bulky to carry around, however.

I went back to Angie's Hong Kong blog posts and checked out what she, and the other people on the street, were wearing, so I'm thinking I may actually have a handle on this, but want to confirm!

Angie, it looks like your "formula" was:

1) Floaty sleeveless blouse
2) Jeans
4) Comfy flats
5) Big statement purse
6) cardigan or lightweight jacket (esp for AC)

Questions:

- I'm assuming it's a good idea to throw in clams and a dress or two for warmer days?

- I got the impression even if it's warm, people will be dressing in fall colors?

- What jacket would you take - white denim, blue denim, or one of my pleather jackets? (white seems more summery but maybe not... ?)

- Along same lines, is my optical white bag okay? It seems summery to me, because I have been toting it all summer, but it would be the ideal travel bag size-wise, and would work with everything.

- Sandals: okay or too summery?

- new scrunchy boots - I noticed you said when you were there in Oct people were already wearing boots. I'm not sure I can quite wrap my head around that given the temps, but you tell me... ?

- Heels: I am assuming we'll be on our feet all day long, so I won't want them. I don't know how the women walk all day in the city in them. If any, I will bring one pair, for going out.

Am I on the right track?
