I’m kicking myself for letting go of the grey Athleta one I had from 10 years ago — it got a bit snug and I gave it away, but it would now be wearable. Athleta has a new version which is nice but only available in black, and I really don’t want a black rain jacket. But I love all the suggestions and experiences and am taking them to heart! </p> <p>I think another skirt is a great idea, and I may take 1-2 dresses. I already have a couple of basic tees set aside, in black and white. A couple of long sleeve shirts — the Athleta white shirt, and the pale blue Rails gauze shirt as well. Heattech long sleeve black top for layering under other tops if it’s chilly for hiking in the mountains. Black hoodie. A couple of sleeveless tops to pair with pants for city days in the heat… And of course a denim jacket. Finds below are some items under consideration. Those Rhône cruises look dreamy; some friends of mine did a food/wine focused one several years back and loved it.</p> <p>I *just* finished up a 170-km backpacking trip in the Alps (the famed Tour du Mont Blanc, through Italy, France and Switzerland), and my #1 advice is not to underestimate the sun. Once you’re above tree line, the sun is relentless. Dress as you would for the Rockies or the Sierra. Sunscreen, brimmed hat, lightweight pants and long sleeves… For outer layers, I packed a rainshell, fleece hoodie, and down vest. Hardly needed the vest; because we were tent camping, we were almost always at lower elevations in the morning and evening. If you have one, a Buff is nice because it can double as a warm hat or gaiter, or sun protection for face and neck. </p> <p>For Amsterdam — rent bikes if you have the time! If you can, I highly recommend the town Wengen and some of the hiking there, especially the walk to Keine Scheidegg. Lauterbrunnen, the town and valley below, was also lovely. I have a lot of Athleta bottoms, from skirts to pants to shorts. I find them very useful for my packing, along with a zella tee they unfortunately decided to change. Luckily I have several of the old stye, though some are definitely showing their wear. I have a plenty big wardrobe, but the packing list seems quite similar for all my trips.</p> <p>Having less agenda for your trip sounds like a lovely way to be spontaneous. With the skirt it creates a two-piece dress (the pieces match, the photo of the skirt is weirdly faded for some reason). A base layer and socks and a hat and scarf cover most situations and can be layered and easily laundered. The lightweight stuff rolls and packs well.&nbsp;<br />We also travel/wander without agenda, and over the years it’s led us to some wonderful things.
