Elizabeth, I ordered this one too, and they were both inexpensive enough that I kept both, as I could see them working in slightly different situations. This one is not slick — it’s more fleecy — and may be better in another bag I have that could serve this purpose in other occasions. I’d say both are worth checking out.

Please do report back on the insert Janet, although I think I may hit the buy button on that soon. Such a great idea. I love my sling camera bags when I am just taking photos, but they are not great for day trips as you can't put other things in them easily. This insert looks like you could use it to keep a (very secure) water bottle upright, as well as pack other things you'd need for the day, and still have good camera access.

Sounds like you've already eliminated my boot/pant concerns. I still say moto Uggs though. The Aquatalias look too practical for "Janet does Europe" :) That is NOT an insult of the boots in any way shape or form... just that the Uggs look more... fun/funky/rockerish.

Hi Elizabeth! The boots in 10 work really well with skinnies/straights rolled up a bit. I've never tried them with bootcuts. With this combination of boots/jeans, I have multiple options for pairings that work well together. Same goes for the tops I packed -- they're the kind of thing that work with skinnies or bootcuts, although of course there are certain pairings that work best. I should have maximum versatility with these pieces. Angie, for once, I"m one step ahead of you -- I have either tried on or worn all the combinations I'm planning for. :-)

The camera bag insert is a new acquisition! I decided to try this solution rather than carry my sling-style camera bag, since my primary purpose on this trip is not photography, and I"m taking very little gear (one body, one lens, lots of memory cards, batteries, and charger -- not even my laptop). I've only tested it out at home, so the trip will be the big test. I think it will work well, based on my brief try-outs -- the insert is easy to use and provides just enough protection for my camera without adding much weight or bulk. I'll post an update after the trip.

Ok, my two cents...

1. This looks like such a simple, versatile capsule. Very mix and match... I always take a big variety of bottoms and it gets complicated. Lesson learned.
2. I think the grey leather jacket is a great addition... good if the temps go up, if you eat in your hotel, and as a layer.
3. If boots #10 can be worn with bootcuts, ie the jeans you are taking, I say go with them. They just look like you could walk and walk in them. Can you wear jeans out over the furry tops of the Aquatalias? Just questioning if these boots will really work with the bottoms you are planning.
4. Talk to me about that camera insert... is this new, or have you used it before? I think I need one!

Have a great trip!!!!!!!!!! Look forward to some photos :)

Make sure you like the outfits - try some on before you pack.

A gigantic scarf with a leather jacket and pullover might keep you warm enough on some days. Hard to say when the Netherlands just had lots of snow...

"Put on a sweater - your mother's cold!" Is a funny saying we have in our house when someone asks advice on what to wear when they are unsure of the weather outside! My only advice would be to bring your best (warmest) socks. Whenever I know I'm in for a tough day or lots of time outside, I wear one of two pair of wool socks (one purchased abroad in Scotland) or my alpaca socks.

My other suggestion would be to clear your charge card before you go and keep some space in your suitcase for purchases made abroad!

Have a WONDERFUL trip, Janet!

The last time I was in that part of the world (Graz, with side trips to Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg), it was mid-winter and not what I would call frigid. It was dreary/rainy, with snow only at the higher elevations. Most days I used a long wool coat with hood. Brought a very warm puffer, but only used it in the mountains . Anyway, I agree with others who've recommend the wool/leather layering approach. Otherwise, your numbers look good to me, more than I've ever packed for a 3-week trip because I am a bum I *love* the red-heeled booties and the convertible Uggs. I prefer the fuzzy suede boots in #10 as a third pair, because they have a very different vibe than all the others and look eminently walkable. You are a black-footwear-only inspiration. This is my own unavoidable tendency and it's nice to see the variety and panache you've managed to achieve with your black bootie collection.

Have fun!!

Oh, forgot to add, Angie, that the first photo shows three bottoms/jeans. Then there's the pair I'll wear on the plane, but I'll add one more to the bag -- maybe a slightly lighter wash to mix things up (the straight/skinny Levi's perhaps), but I also thought about the burgundy Dre's -- they would be great with the black tops, and the blush blouse.

Oops, hit reply too fast.

My handbag plan is to bring the tote shown below because I can put my DSLR discretely in it for walking around town -- I don't want to carry a blatant camera bag. I ordered this bag and it's wonderfully lightweight and has a cross body strap, and functions nicely as a small tote even without the camera, so it will be great for exploring and shopping during the day.

I'm also bringing the black and gold miniaudiere I think I showed earlier to wear with the Fuzzi dress and for dressy nights (it has a detachable chain strap). I'm thinking I may also pack one of my crossbody/clutch bags for days when I don't want to carry a tote. So three bags in total.

Angie, I'm thinking of bringing my grey leather moto as another topper -- it can layer under the puffer if needed, or alone over a sweater and underlayer if the weather turns warmer (that's what I wear when it's around 50 here).

L'Abeille, thanks! Definitely taking at least two pairs of my most walkable boots so I can alternate. That's why I'm taking what may look kind of boring (I know black dominates my photos here!) but they are the most proven winners for keeping my feet warm and dry and comfortable.

Hi Angie!

It's so much easier to respond on my laptop -- I have to apologize that my posts and responses are usually so poorly constructed and typed, but they're all on the phone and composed quickly.

I want to clarify that a couple of the "evening" tops I've included in the photos -- the black velvet button-front and a black top that's folded underneath it -- are actually good pieces for day into evening with a layer over or under them. They are the two tops pictured below in Finds. I'm thinking the two new tops I just posted the other day will be good tops to dress up a bit more. My thinking is maybe one additional dressy top beyond that. I don't think that's too much?

My only worry is that you'll be too cold sitting in a restaurant in those evening tops. They all have tricky looking sleeves that you can't layer under or over very easily to my eye.

Also I second what was said above about making sure you will be able to alternate between two pairs of footwear comfortable for all-day walking. I regret the things I didn't see/do in Vienna because my feet hurt too much, when the boots and shoes that seemed fine for all the walking I do at home, just didn't cut it for European city-level walking.

Good heavens, we are having trouble communicating, lol!
I thought you needed extra underthings because they’d be against your body every day, and I pointed out the extent I’d want to cover for that reason.
Many other people said that it would be very cold, which surprised me.
You posted something that made me think you hadn’t understood the laundry/underthings connection I had made.
I looked up the forecast, confirming that it won’t be all that cold, and posted that I think you are accustomed to those temps, tried to explain what I’d meant the first time, and said it doesn’t matter anyway since you can do laundry.
You want to reassure me that you won’t be cold?
Let’s just end it with me saying I’m sure you’ll look great, as always, and I wish you a great trip!

FT, not sure why you got the impression I’m not used to cold weather. I live in the mid-Atlantic US — a four-season climate where we’ve already had snowfall this year! 30s and low 40s are fine with me, pretty typical for The Baltimore-Washington area. I’ve been to Antarctica and the Arctic, so I am pretty good at cold weather gear dressing — that is, extended time outdoors in waterproof gear taking photos. I’m just trying to make sure I’ll be comfortable and feel stylish in city settings, and not overheat when indoors. I run warmer now than I used to. :-)

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

In your original post, when you said you were taking some underlayers. I got the impression that they’d be an occasional thing, or that you’d have a few to rotate. My point was that they will have a purpose besides warmth. Temps will likely be in the 30s and low 40s, which I’m guessing is what you’re used to in the winter. Not knowing that you’ll be able to do laundry, I was thinking that wearing them everyday meant you didn’t have to take as many tops, but that wouldn’t save you space in the suitcase because you’ll want to change what you’re wearing underneath much more frequently. But since you can wash them, that’s a moot point. Sorry I missed the point about that top. Have a great trip.

It s cold here and will be even colder in the places you are visiting. Please think about some thin thermal layers top and bottom and gloves ,warm scarf and hat.Your puffer will be essential.Nothing spoils a trip more than being too cold all the time.Having said that you will be able to purchase very good cold weather gear where you are going if you get stuck.

You are definitely on good path here, Janet. Beautiful pieces. I agree about reducing the black booties, and I would add one more pair of pants that are versatile: good for daytime, but add the right accessories and top and they work for a casual evening. I find that pants I fly in lack appeal quickly and 4 pairs is about right for me on a 12 day trip. Also, if the weather is a total bear, an extra pair may help. Is your puffer truly waterproof, just in case of cold rain?

Have a blast! It sounds like a very special trip.

It sounds like you have every possibility covered. I would probably take only 3 pair footwear. Maybe 2 pair jeans from #1 3 at the most since you have a dress. Take the Missoni scarf only and plan to buy one on the trip if you need/want another. Can you carry everything?

I think this looks about right. I tend to do laundry on a trip and factor this in - just once is often enough.

Are you taking gym gear or lounge wear - in a longer trip sometimes there are quieter days when this type of soft gear is useful.

And while you could probably eliminate an evening top, they don't take up much room at all and dressing nicely in the evening can be fun and part of it all. Given that it is winter you are bound to eat out more and spend nights in cosy wine bars etc.

I tend to take four pairs of footwear with me in summer (sneakers, two walking sandals and one pair of evening) and three in winter (sneakers, day boots, dressier boots). I think having two pairs of day walking sandals/boots/sneakers is vital as swapping every day or every second day helps so much with happy feet.

Have a fun trip!!

Oh, with the puffer and all that other stuff, you'll be fine. No real need for the leather jacket in that case, though it might be nice to have some kind of topper in restaurants etc. or if you give up your outerwear coat at a gallery or something like that. I definitely think a broader choice of bottoms would be great if you have room in the bag. It's going to be so fun!

FT, the "evening" tops would be worn with the bootcut jeans and heeled boots most likely. Sort of a dressed-up casual. I would prefer to have a small collection of nice tops for our nicer dinners out so that hubs doesn't see the same blouse/top at nice restaurants every time we do one of those special dinners. As i said in my post, 5 and 6 are the same top, I just wanted to show the back detail.

Warm wool socks, a couple of tank tops, a set of long johns (a thin Uniqlo set), and some Uniqlo heat-tech tops will definitely go with me, as under layers.

Two cashmere slouchy berets are going with me (one black, one blue), and I'll take two pairs of gloves as well. Also a compact umbrella.

Lisa, I definitely want to take at least one of the 9-10 choices because those are the warmest and best in foul weather. Yes, 7 would be worn with the dress -- those will function as "dressy" shoes for this trip. Not terribly dressy, I know, but I think they'll work.

Cat, to me, "sweaters" are pullovers. I will wear those over one of those thin under layers (heattech tees). I don't really do cardigans. But I am thinking that one of my lightweight leather moto jackets would be a good layer -- perhaps the grey one, so I'm not adding more black. Thanks for the nudge about that. Re: shoes, I also don't really do ballet flats. My one pair of slip-on loafers are really more warm-weather things. I think I'l be fine without non-bootie shoes since I barely wear anything other than boots or booties in the winter at home, unless we're talking about sneakers. One of the scarves pictured is quite warm (the Missoni) -- I may take another warm scarf. I have a red one that might be good for sparking up the long black puffer. Or maybe my white faux fur scarf, which is also quite warm, but it's kind of bulky.

Suz, I'm taking the new long black puffer (see below), and now I'm thinking of taking my grey leather moto as another mid-layering piece. I'm not sure whether the weather might make bootcuts problematic, but if I'm mainly taking those for casual "evening" wear, I think it will be OK. I am thinking of adding one more pair of jeans though. Plus there are the jeans I will be wearing on the plane. So that would be five bottoms, total. We're staying at Marriott properties almost the whole time (yay for reward points!), so laundry will be an option. :-)

Oh, the Aquatalias are a few years old and suede, and I've never done a thing with them even though they have been worn in slush and snow and salt. Those boots are a miracle! I'm thinking I might take those instead of the Ugg moto boots because they look a little more polished. Still thinking.

Thanks for the ideas, ladies!

I agree about under layers and wool - socks and sweaters. And a hat to cover the ears. Assume snow, pretty snow, but still snow. Slushy melting snow...

What a wonderful trip you have planned and so romantic at this time of year. The colours you have chosen heighten the sense of romance and drama.

What have you got for underlayers, Janet? And what coat/coats are you bringing again? I am concerned that this may not be enough layers/ warmth for central Europe in December.

I was in London in February a few years ago and definitely needed wintery layers to stay warm enough outdoors and even in galleries etc. Not CANADA kind of heavy puffers etc. But as an example...I might wear wool trousers, wool socks, booties, a silk camisole, silk blouse, wool sweater, leather jacket, scarf, wool coat, hat, gloves.

I am with Ummlila in worrying that this is a lot of black interchangeable footwear. I am with Cat in thinking those Aquatalias in #10 look like awesome winter boots!

Will it be too damp for bootcuts? (I have no idea but I know it would be where I live!!)

Will you have laundry options? If not, I'd probably bring another bottom if possible...

I’m wondering if you’ll need more underlayers for warmth.

I think it is ABOUT enough. My immediate thoughts:

Don't you lack toppers? Or do you intend to use your sweaters as toppers? Excuse me, but when people say "sweaters," I often wonder whether they mean "pullovers" or "cardigans" or both ... Anyway, I suggest bringing some cardigans and/or other toppers which can be opened in front--very practical when you feel warm when you get into shops, museums, restaurants etc.

The colours in #2 are beautiful, and I am sure you are going to look fab, as always. I hope that at least one of your scarves is really warm. By the way, there will be probably be many opportunities to buy great scarves in Prague!

Love the boots in #10--they look chic as well as warm, have good soles and will likely be practical for a lot of walking. But if it's suede, be sure to use a protective spray.

How about bringing a pair of SHOES, i.e. loafers or ballet flats? At your hotel (or where else you stay), it might be nice and relaxing to get out of the boots and just be able to walk around in shoes. ;-)

Remember to bring at least one pair of gloves. And warm socks--they needn't be thick--even a thin layer of wool can be warm and comfortable.

Enjoy your holiday! Three weeks in interesting cities of Central Europe sounds wonderful.

I am mostly down with this plan, and love the new blush blouse, but I do find that you have a lot of black shoes/booties in the list that are not substantially different from one another. I'd be inclined to eliminate 9, 10 and 11. What do you plan to wear with your dress -- #7?
