Here's a visual Lyn --

https://www.eaglecreek.com/sho.....190#hero=0

LemonLuxe, I pretty much always use the same pouch for certain items. (I don't use cubes, I use a folder and a bunch of various size pouches). It helps that like Joy most of my clothes are stacked and compressed in the folder. Also because I use pouches not cubes, it just takes a squeeze to figure out what's inside. Chargers and socks feel a lot different.

I'm packing today for a trip tomorrow. Maybe I'll take some pics of my packing method...

So many wise advises here!
But can somebody post some visuals for the so called "folders" (which can compact and hold a whole stack of folded clothes) please? Is that something different than the cubes, isn't it:-) Thanx so much.

I use EC packing cubes but am most dependent on their folders which can compact and hold a whole stack of folded clothes. They come in different sizes and a small or medium can hold everything.
You should see how my sons pack. They have outfitted small universal sized carry-ons ( 18 or 19 inch) with folders and cubes that fit in like pieces of a puzzle. It is a thing of beauty. I start with a folder that fits the bottom of my small bag and arrange cubes and an EC hanging toiletries holder on top. My quart bag of liquids goes into my personal item for extra easy access. The cubes also are handy for organizing the personal item.

For anyone whose cubes are all similar make and colour: how do you label them? Mine are all black. About half Eagle Creek, and the rest sturdy ones from a discontinued small brand spelled without vowels.

I am unnaturally fond of packing cubes, yet not devoted enough to flip through four or more double-sided cubes before finding the section containing socks.

It doesn’t help that I change up which sizes I use for given categories. So at one point socks might be in a narrow single-layer cube, but another time that cube might be the power supply catchall.

A boutique selling very nice packing cubes also sold handmade leather charms (socks, pants, tees, etc.) for a mere $120-180 each. I don’t cherish cubes that dearly, but also don’t want to use sharpy on plastic key tags.

I use the cheap Amazon cubes plus a folder for shirts that I also use for shirt dresses. Our newspaper carrier puts our paper in long skinny bags to protect against the rain. I used to put various pairs in different colors, but then the carrier started to use translucent bags which are even better. Now I give the colored bags to a friend for when she walks her dog.

A YouTube traveler recommends the long skinny cubes as most useful; I tend to agree. They are easiest to fit in a carryon. I fill them by type of garment vs by outfit and roll my clothes. I found the largest cube totally useless because it was too big to compress my clothing and didn’t fit well in the suitcase. Keep in mind that I am 5’ 1” and wear P2-4 so YMMV.

I use the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter (it may have been called something different when I first bought it). They aren't cubes, more like pouches -- so if partially full they can squish and morph and take up the extra nooks and crannies in the suitcase.

And the EC folder. The folder is great: I put all my tops and pants folded in that, put the folder on them, velcro it up tight, and then it goes on the top, which helps with closing the suitcase.

Pouches for socks/underwear/bras, pajamas, shoes, and knits that won't wrinkle go underneath. I use a slimline toiletry kit. For dirty clothes I either bring an extra pouch, or use a reusable shopping bag (always have one or two in my suitcase).

I use additional pouches in my carry-on as well for chargers, headphones, scarves etc.

I always use packing cubes. On most trips I carry:

2 Eagle Creek medium cubes - one contains pants and jeans, the other has tops. I roll all my items inside the cubes. On shorter trips, I consolidate both bottoms and tops into one cube.
1 Eagle Creek small cube - for lingerie
1 zippered toiletries bag - I have pre-check and don't have to pull my 3-1-1 bag out during screening, so I just tuck it inside the bag where I put my non-liquid toiletries.
mesh laundry bag - empty on the way out, full of dirty clothes on the way home
shoe bags - one per pair, just simple nylon or cotton bags to keep dirty shoes off of clothing

Occasionally, I'll carry an extra cube for my son or husband, as this system leaves some room in my suitcase. We each have our own carry-on, but on shorter trips, we don't bring all of them.

I don’t use packing cubes because I like to trim as much weight as possible and save as much room as possible. I did though sew myself in high school a bunch of matching shoe bags and one for laundry to separate dirty from clean things. Still using them! I’m so proud of myself now: I did a good job, lol.

Nice system with the cubes. I do something similar with my space bags.
If I am going to a meeting, I pack the space bags by items to be worn per day so that I do not need to think or look for items in my suitcase. When I have more casual travels, I pack by item type.
For people who bring groceries, I recommend that you stay far far away from the very cute FDA beagles If they wag their tail at you, you are out of your items.

I am a huge fan of packing cubes. I travel frequently for both work and pleasure and have found packing cubes to be a game changer. I only do carry on so the packing cubes help keep me organized. Like Janet, I place like items together in the same cube. I also carry one empty cube that eventually gets filled with dirty items. I also consolidate items as necessary so I know which cubes have items that are still "in play" during the trip. Unlike Angie, I rarely add anything extra to my suitcase. If I purchase anything extra, I will just mail it home. It tends to be cheaper and more convenient for me than dealing with a checked bag.

Thanks for the helpful advice, featherwitch. If packing cubes work for you - milk it!

FWIW, cube systems do not work of me. I'm an experienced packer and traveler, and I bring back loads of stuff from our travels. I don't do carry-on. Breakables and artworks for our home, wardrobe items, gifts for friends, and legal groceries are very common items I pack along with my stuff. The cubes restrict how I use the space to pack and protect, IYKWIM. They keep things organized, but for my needs - they waste space. They could be perfect for your needs, so do check it out.

I love packing cubes. My husband was seriously envious when he saw my system while we were traveling in Africa. I generally group items by type: one cube of tops, one of bottoms, smaller ones contain underwear and socks, workout or swim wear, etc. When I unpack in a hotel room, I simply move the whole cube into a drawer and unzip it so everything is easy to access by type.

I have a similar system. I pack each of my kids' items into their own packing cube; hubs has his own packing cube. One cube per person usually works for trips of ~7days (up to 10). Those three cubes go in a rolling duffel with an empty mesh bag for dirty laundry.

I can usually do laundry where we go, and if that's the case, I will consolidate clean things into one or two cubes, things that need stain treatment/extra care at home in a cube. If I can't wash laundry, the mesh bag of dirty clothes gets tossed into the duffel and I deal with it when we get home.

We have very similar systems. I differentiate between bag sizes. I’ve got packing cubes from ebags that work very well. I also keep my shoes in bags. I used to travel with two shoes, but I’ve decided 3 pair suit me better because I need to wear shoes even inside. So two all day shoes and one house slip on shoe that’s smaller to pack.

I don’t always pack a separate outfit in a different cube unless I’m going more than one place. Then I might separate so I only need to grab one instead of going through several.

@FashIntern brought this up on the thread about carry ons, so I thought I would bring the conversation into a new thread. I travel approximately every other week for work and try to do carry on only to speed up the process.

I have both Eagle Creek and Tom Bihn packing cubes. Here is my system:

Similar things together- underwear, pajamas, workout wear, and then capsules for various days or activities in separate cubes. I always use the same colors at the outset so I know what's in each cube if I have to pull something out.

As the days progress, clean items get consolidated into cubes, worn but wearable again into other cubes, and dirty in a washable mesh laundry bag and inside a cube as well.

All toiletries, liquids, and other needs are duplicated and have their own dedicated bags that I review before each trip and re-fill or replace.

I try to get away with one pair of shoes to travel in, and one pair of shoes for the destination.

This allows me to:

Know immediately what is clean and dirty

Open my suitcase in public and not have it totally reveal my contents

Quickly change my clothes if I need to- I know where everything is.

Make sure I am not forgetting anything- the system is the same every time.

Sort my clothing when I get home into laundry and clean (I always pack a couple of extra small items in case of emergency/mood change). I can be home from the airport, unpacked, and in the shower 45 minutes after landing!

How do you all use packing cubes, or not?
