Thanks, everyone! I wound up getting a large plastic tub because they were cheap and the clothes won't need to be stored for too long. It was the perfect size for my coats/jackets (minus one blazer for job interviews and one denim jacket for cool evenings), plus a couple other items. I did make sure everything was clean and completely dry before packing. Now my closet has a lot more space, and I'm happy with it! I'm going to work on a spring/summer edit, too, before I move, but I'm being careful because I know my dressing habits are quite a bit different under quarantine. I appreciate all the suggestions!

My first thought was also vacuum packing them. You should make sure they're clean and dry first to avoid getting moths and/or mildew. I think some dry cleaners can clean and then vacuum pack them for you if you want to go that route, or you can do it yourself with this type of bag: https://www.amazon.com/Space-J.....038;qid=15

And congrats on graduation!!!

Vacuum packing is the best if the coats are puffa type ones as it takes all the air / volume out. You do need to give them a vigorous shake to refluff when you take out of storage.

Congrats with your second bachelor! My advice is to keep two or three coats and others should be given to those who are in need of apparel.

Congrats on so many accomplishments!

As for storage, I would say make sure you have edited and are really only keeping ones you will want to wear, make sure they are clean before you store them (because, moths!), and take advantage of sometimes overlooked spaces like under the bed, or empty suitcases, etc.

Congrats Think I started college about age 27!
Since short term storage, I'd say plastic tubs. Cedar chests are good, but wait til you have a permanent living situation, cause they are the heaviest furniture on earth!

Congrats on graduating, being engaged, and moving in together.
FWIW, in case it is relevant, grad schools often want their students to work for a few years first.

MsMaven--thank you so much! I don't expect to be traveling somewhere cold any time soon (thanks, pandemic), but you're right, it's good to keep something available just in case.

Zaeobi--yes, exactly, I just want them out of the way for now. I haven't heard of the bundling method; I'll look it up tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion! And good luck with your MA!

rachylou--yes, it can get fairly humid here and mildew is always a concern. The storage will be pretty short term because I'm hoping to move in the next month or two, finances permitting, and I will most likely have more space once I do.

Congratulations!

I feel like that in Atlanta, mildewing might be an issue. I’m wondering if those big ziploc storage bags with all the air sucked/squeezed out and desiccant sachets would work, but I don’t know.

So from what I understand, you want to keep all of your outerwear for winter but just pack it to be out of sight for now, right? If so, have you tried the 'bundle packing method'? There are a few YouTube tutorials available but, depending on the exact number of coats you have, I imagine it could become quite bulky fast. But maybe you could solve this by creating multiple bundles instead, & making a note (on the outside of every box) of exactly which coats are inside each box.

Some people prefer transparent plastic boxes for this (so they can easily see the items inside) but I wouldn't recommend this for clothing since it can get mildewy.

PS - Congrats on graduating! I'm struggling with working full-time whilst doing an MA right now, so I know it's not easy to keep on trucking!

Congratulations on the 2 bachelor's degrees! I was 28 when I finally got my undergrad degree--it takes a lot of determination to keep at it.

I have no advice on packing coats or jackets for storage, but it seems like a good idea if you can find the space. There's also the possibility you will need some of these items if you need to travel to colder areas--which is what happened to me when my son was transferred to Chicago.

Good luck with your plans!

Edit: solved for now!

Hi, all!

It's been a bit nuts over here. The good news is that I finally graduated from college, at age 27, with two bachelor's degrees! The not as good news, in which I'm finding lots of silver linings, is that I did not get into grad school this year.

The current plan is to stay in the Atlanta area and move closer to the city, ideally along a train line so I can use public transportation to get around once it's safe to do so. I'm currently looking for work, as is my fiancée, and we're planning on finally moving in together!

So the current issue is that I have WAY MORE JACKETS AND COATS than anyone who lives in Atlanta should, because I love them, and I do wear them all when it's cool enough. My closet is tiny and I'm working on a wardrobe edit to cut down a bit before the move, but even so, I have more clothes than can reasonably fit in the space I have at the moment. I'm wanting to pack my winter stuff I intend to keep away now that it's getting warmer (hanging onto a denim jacket and some good shirts for layering for the odd cool spring day), but I'm struggling to figure out a good solution... I'd like to simply pack them and set them aside, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I was wondering if any of you might have any good advice.

I hope everyone is staying well, physically and mentally. Sending so much love to all.
